WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
"Out of the Mouths of Babes" just before the Service Numbers

I can’t understand why I flunked American History.
When I was a kid, there was so little of it.

 WHAT’S NEW?

SHOCKING NEWS
In order to test switchgear equipment in each building and prevent future unscheduled outages, Facilities Management plans to test electrical equipment in each building as follows:

Saturday, May 12, 2007:
Science Building
Peck Hall
Lovejoy Library
Founders Hall
Alumni Hall
Supporting Services Building

Saturday, May 19, 2007:
Dunham Hall
Engineering Building
Vadalabene Center
Student Fitness Center
Rendleman Hall
Art & Design Building
H&R Plant
Radio Transmitter Building

The testing will result in short outages of less than an hour each. No one will be prohibited from entering the building; however, those planning to be in their offices/labs should keep in mind that the testing will be taking place.

If a test date absolutely will not work for a certain building, please contact Facilities Management at 3711 as soon as possible. As always, FM appreciates the support and patience of the University community.

TO HONOR THE FALLEN
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Thursday, April 26, 2007, to honor Lance Corporal Jesse D. Delatorre, 29, United States Marine Corps, of Aurora, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on April 16, 2007.

Campus flags flew at half-staff on Friday, April 27, 2007, in memory of PFC Lucas V. Starcevich, 25, United States Army, of Canton, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on April 16, 2007.

IN THE WORKS

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update April 29, 2007:  A one-week delay will take place on installation in the Art & Design Building; work should begin May 7, 2007.  It was reported in error that installation in Founders and Alumni Hall was complete; the sliding door on the south side of Alumni Hall has not been connected.  Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented.  Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester.  Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access.  The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door.  FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community.  In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.

Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys.  Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork.  Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees.  Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.

Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director.  Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester.  The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.

It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall.  If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update April 29, 2007:  The contractor has said that he is finished; all debris and miscellaneous brick should be removed from campus.  Report any remaining debris to Facilities Management at 3711.

MASS RELAMP
Update April 29, 2007: Work is complete in Dunham Hall; the electricians move to Rendleman Hall next.  Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update April 29, 2007: The window contractor called to say that the new windows were delivered several weeks early!  Some scrambling took place on the University’s part to ensure availability of space, but installation will begin May 7, 2007.

Facilities completed the review of the 100% construction documents for the Exterior Enhancement project.  The architect has made the requested corrections, but awaits review completion from CDB.  Once those corrections are made, the project will be issued for bids.  Hopefully, the comments will come quickly and this project could be out for bids in early May and construction underway in July.  Tuckpointing and rebuilding of brick walls is included, so late summer work would be ideal.

ADA PROJECT
Update April 29, 2007:  Steady construction progress is being made on the elevator addition to Building 8280.  The concrete foundations are going in, the elevator concrete pit has been poured and underground plumbing is being installed.  Work in the Vadalabene Center isn’t quite as obvious as the contractor is extending the fire alarm system.  New conduit is being installed and eventually, new detectors will appear on the walls.

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update April 29, 2007: The faculty and staff met with the architects and lab designers this week to review the program.  Each department “played” with a 3-D plexiglass model.  The model allows for the visualization of relationships within the department as well as the relationship to other departments.  Thus, the model is a great planning tool since it creates understanding within and between departments as to where everything is located, how far one department might be from another, and where within each department spaces are located.  The user can literally walk through the space to “feel” the new or renovated facility.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES…

On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother.  The note read, “The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.”

I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved.  She was stark naked!  As I was reeling from shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, “Mom!  That lady isn’t wearing a seat belt!”

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year old daughter on my afternoon rounds.  The various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs, unfailingly intrigued her.  One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass.  As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered,
“The tooth fairy will never believe this!”

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party.  When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.”  “And why not, darling?”
“You KNOW that it always gives you a headache the next morning!”

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women’s locker room.  When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover.  The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, “What’s the matter; haven’t you ever seen a little boy before?”

A little girl had just finished her first week of school.  “I’m just wasting my time,” she said to her mother.  “I can’t read, I can’t write and they won’t let me talk!”
