WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
"You Can’t Tell a Vet Just by Looking" just before the Service Numbers

If our country is worth dying for in time of war
let us resolve that it is truly worth living for in time of peace.

 WHAT’S NEW?

SHOCKING NEWS
In order to test switchgear equipment in each building and prevent future unscheduled outages, Facilities Management plans to test electrical equipment in each building as follows:

Saturday, May 19, 2007:
Dunham Hall
Engineering Building
Vadalabene Center
Student Fitness Center
Rendleman Hall
Art & Design Building
H&R Plant
Radio Transmitter Building

The testing will result in short outages of less than an hour each. No one will be prohibited from entering the building; however, those planning to be in their offices/labs should keep in mind that the testing will be taking place.

If a test date absolutely will not work for a certain building, please contact Facilities Management at 3711 as soon as possible. As always, FM appreciates the support and patience of the University community.

Do not be concerned if a building is not on the list; only the buildings listed are being tested.

CHANGES AT ESLHEC
Beginning Monday, May 21, 2007, evening custodial crews at East St. Louis Higher Education Center will work from 4-12 PM Monday through Thursday and from 2-10 PM on Fridays.  The new schedule allows for better access to classrooms due to late class schedules.

IN THE WORKS

NEW CHEMISTRY LABS
Construction of two new laboratories to serve the Chemistry Department is underway at the BioTech Laboratory in University Park.  Underground plumbing and electrical work is complete.  New conduit for connection to the University computer system has been run under University Park Drive and the cable will be pulled later.  The general contractor is installing steel roof framing prior to cutting a hole through the roof which will serve the new rooftop heating and cooling system.  The plumbing contractor is installing the drain and vent lines above the floor to serve the new sinks and fume hoods.  Completion is anticipated before fall semester begins.

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update May 13, 2007:  Only the sliding door on the south side of Alumni Hall has not been connected.  Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update May 13, 2007:  The architect completed his final inspection and the contractor had people available to correct the few remaining items to complete the masonry renovation project.  The final completion papers were signed and are being processed by CDB.

MASS RELAMP
Update May 13, 2007:  The crew has moved to days to complete areas they were unable to access at night.  Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update May 13, 2007:  The excitement of the window units arriving early has been dulled by the rain; that is, the rain during the last two weeks delayed the window contractor’s completion of his current project, which resulted in the ESLHEC project start date being changed several times.  The latest promise is that the work will begin on May 21, 2007.

The contractor installing some new sidewalks is staking out the locations and will start laying concrete in the next week, depending on the weather.  The project to renovate the exterior walls of Buildings A, B, and C is moving toward the bid phase as all review comments were received by the architects.  At this time, an early July bid due date seems reasonable.

ADA PROJECT
Update May 13, 2007:  The general contractor has been stymied on Building 8280 as a number of existing conditions were not recognized by the architects.  Thus, the architects and engineers are reviewing those conditions to determine the best solution for the connection through the existing wall at the stairway.  It has been determined that there is insufficient time to complete the building for the start of the fall semester, so the contractor will complete the addition and return in May, 2008, to remove the existing stairs and break through the existing wall to connect the two units.

The electrical contractor continues to install fire alarm devices and wiring in the Vadalabene Center.  The general contractor will soon begin installing new lever handle styled door knobs on the main door to most office suites that currently have the round door handle.  As soon as the installation sequence is available, the information will be in the Clipboard.

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update May 13, 2007:  The architects are studying the results of their last workshop and are preparing a preliminary report for review of the building committee.

YOU CAN’T TELL A VET JUST BY LOOKING

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carrier didn’t run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth whose behavior is outweighed in the cosmic scales by four hours of unparalleled bravery near the 38th parallel in Korea.

She is the nurse who fought against futility in Da Nang and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years.

He is the POW who left one person and came back another.

He is the drill instructor who has never been in combat, but has saved countless lives by turning no-accounts into Marines.

He is the parade-riding legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the white-haired guy bagging groceries at the supermarket, aggravatingly slow, who helped liberate a Nazi death camp.

A vet is an ordinary and extraordinary human being---someone who offered his life’s vital years in the service of his country.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.  We will never be able to repay the debt of gratitude we owe.
