WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
"Thoughts on Motherhood" just before the Service Numbers

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.
~Dinah Craik

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

 WHAT’S NEW?

SHOCKING NEWS
In order to test switchgear equipment in each building and prevent future unscheduled outages, Facilities Management plans to test electrical equipment in each building as follows:

Saturday, May 12, 2007:
Science Building
Peck Hall
Lovejoy Library
Founders Hall
Alumni Hall
Supporting Services Building

Saturday, May 19, 2007:
Dunham Hall
Engineering Building
Vadalabene Center
Student Fitness Center
Rendleman Hall
Art & Design Building
H&R Plant
Radio Transmitter Building

The testing will result in short outages of less than an hour each. No one will be prohibited from entering the building; however, those planning to be in their offices/labs should keep in mind that the testing will be taking place.

If a test date absolutely will not work for a certain building, please contact Facilities Management at 3711 as soon as possible. As always, FM appreciates the support and patience of the University community.

Do not be concerned if a building is not on the list; only the buildings listed are being tested.

DIG THIS!
SIUE is now a member of JULIE.  JULIE, which stands for Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators, serves as a message handling notification service for underground facility owners by taking information about planned excavations and distributing this information to its members.  It is then the responsibility of each facility owner to mark the location of their underground utilities at the excavation site.  Illinois law requires anyone engaging in any type of excavation to provide advance notice to the underground facility owners and operators.

GREAT IDEA
Biking and walking enthusiasts will be interested to know Trailnet’s first “Hike It or Bike It” will be held at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge on May 12, 2007.  Walkers can register at the Missouri entrance to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge from 8:30-9:00 a.m.  The Hike It route is two to five miles; the longest route crosses the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and includes the three-mile wood chip loop trail the city of Madison recently cut on Chouteau Island.

Walkers are reminded to bring a pack including these essentials:  a map (provided at registration), extra food and water, a first aid kit, sunglasses, sunscreen and a whistle.

TO HONOR THE FALLEN
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Monday, May 7, 2007, to honor PFC Cole B. Spencer, 21, United States Army, of Gays, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on April 28, 2007.

IN THE WORKS

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update May 6, 2007:  Only the sliding door on the south side of Alumni Hall has not been connected.  Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update May 6, 2007:  The final completion meeting is scheduled for this week.  No reports of debris were received by FM, so the contractor is finished.

MASS RELAMP
Update May 6, 2007:  Work is complete in Rendleman Hall.  The crew will move to days to complete areas they were unable to access at night.  Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update May 6, 2007:  The contractor is starting installation of the windows in Buildings A & B this week.  They will only remove and install the replacement windows that can be completed in one work day, estimated to be about 4 units a day.  Several windows will require the brick and steel lintel over the opening to be removed and replaced; these openings will probably take more that one day to complete.

Facilities and CDB have completed the review of the 100% construction documents for the Exterior Enhancement project, and the architect is making the requested corrections.  Once those corrections are made, the project will be issued for bids.  Hopefully, this project could be out for bids in early May and construction underway in July.  Tuckpointing and rebuilding of brick walls is included, so late summer work would be ideal.

ADA PROJECT
Update May 6, 2007:  A meeting was held this week with the general contractor, CDB, the School of Dental Medicine and Facilities Management to review the construction schedule on the elevator addition at Building 8280.  The design architect overlooked several critical items where the connection between the existing and the new occur, and is redesigning a number of details.  This redesign has slowed construction and as a result, the contractor does not think the entire construction project can be completed before school begins in August.  The contractor recommended, and CDB and SIUE have concurred, that the best solution would be to complete the addition this summer.  Then, next May, after school is dismissed, work to remove the existing stairway in Building 8280, frame the stairwell closed, and break through to connect to the addition can be scheduled.

The electricians continue with their installation of the extended fire alarm system in the Vadalabene Center.  Steady progress has been made on the second floor.

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update May 6, 2007:  The architects and engineers have taken the information gleaned from the faculty and staff at the last workshop and are revising the building program accordingly.  Little change to the program is required.  The architects will now begin to develop some concepts of the building as they have an understanding of the relationships between spaces within each department.  It will be several months before the architects return with information for review and discussion.

THOUGHTS ON MOTHERHOOD

You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around - and why his parents will always wave back.
~William D. Tammeus

Insanity is hereditary; you get it from your children.
 ~Sam Levenson

The one thing children wear out faster than shoes is parents.
~John J. Plomp

Setting a good example for your children takes all the fun out of middle age.
~William Feather, The Business of Life, 1949

An ounce of mother is worth a pound of priests.
Spanish Proverb

Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother.
 ~Oprah Winfrey

Sing out loud in the car even, or especially, if it embarrasses your children.
 ~Marilyn Penland

My mom is a never ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune. ~Graycie Harmon
