WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Geese Facts” just before the Service Numbers

"When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained."
Mark Twain

WHAT’S NEW?

ALL IN THE SPIRIT OF FUN

“Facilities Management, could I help you?”  the Service Desk person said.
“Yes, this is University Police.  We have a report of a student being attacked by a goose near Founders Hall.”
“Ok, I’ll let the engineer know.”

“Jim, we have a report from the University Police that a student has been attacked by a goose near Founders Hall.”
“Well, I don’t quite know what to do about that.  I mean, I don’t have a shotgun or anything.”  (laughing)
“I understand; I just thought you should know.”

Minutes later:
“Well, I’ve rounded up about 10 suspects.  Do you think they could identify the goose in a lineup?  I’ve also got a mother sitting on a nest right next to the building.”
“I think she would be your prime suspect, Jim.”

All in a day’s work at Facilities…a reminder to, please, pass on to students; geese are nesting right now and, like most mothers, do not like to be disturbed when tending their young.  Give them a wide berth when walking nearby.

IN MEMORY
Campus flags fly at half-staff on Monday, March 26, 2007, in memory of Lance Corporal Raymond J. Holzhauer, United States Marine Corps, 19 years old, of Dwight, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on March 15, 2007.

THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS--REMINDER
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus.  The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039.  Key inventories are still being accepted, but the compilation of the list of non-responders for the appropriate Vice Chancellor will begin soon. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

IN THE WORKS

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update March 18, 2007:  Keyless access system activation has been completed for Founders and Alumni Halls.  The planned activation for the Vadalabene Center has been delayed one week.  Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented.  Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester.  Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access.  The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door.  FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community.  In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.

Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys.  Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork.  Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees.  Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.

Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director.  Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester.  The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.

It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall.  If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

NORTH UNIVERSITY ROAD CLOSING UPDATE
The contractor is making good progress rebuilding the North University Drive at New Poag Rd. The sub base work is complete, the curbs are poured and work started Friday, March 16, 2007, on the roadway itself. If the weather holds and the asphalt plants stay open, work should be completed close to the original goal of April 1.

DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update March 25, 2007:  The door replacement project is nearly complete!  Door stops will be installed, and two doors remain on back order.

MASS RELAMP
Update March 25, 2007:  Lamps are currently being changed on the third floor of Peck Hall; electricians move next to the Science Building.  Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

Further updates await the return of Rick Klein, Campus Architect, from vacation.

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update March 11, 2007:  The Science Building expansion continues in a holding pattern as financial considerations are reviewed.  The preliminary program has been developed along with associated construction costs.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update March 11, 2007:  The manufacturer has promised delivery of the exhaust fan for the cafeteria grill hood.  The contractor will complete some necessary preliminary preparation work before a crane is used to lift out the old fan and lift in the new.  Work should be completed within the week.

A pre-construction meeting was held on the window replacement project at ESLHEC.  The project will complete the replacement of windows in Buildings A & B.  Windows in Building C will be replaced at a later date.  The contractor has coordinated schedules with the school so work could begin in May; unfortunately, the lead time on windows is measured in months so there may be a delay.

ADA PROJECT
Update March 11, 2007:  A slight delay, hopefully, has occurred as the contractor completes all necessary paperwork for the State.  One contractor has completed his paperwork and is in the process of obtaining shop drawings and materials for the project.  Even the contractor with the delayed paperwork has begun the shop drawing and material acquisition procedure.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update March 11, 2007:  A number of miscellaneous projects are occurring around campus.  The School of Pharmacy will be expanding into some neighboring space beginning in July; that is, the construction will begin in July.  The design is currently being developed.  The Science Department is adding two chemistry laboratories in the Bio Tech Lab Building in University Park to serve Nursing students.  Several departments are considering remodeling of existing spaces, also.

As little as we think we like them…

Geese Facts

Next fall when you see geese heading south for the winter... flying along in V formation...you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way:
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range, than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone... and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are.

When the head goose gets tired it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs...with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What do we say when we honk from behind?

Finally...and this is important...when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshots, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
