THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.
IN
THE WORKS
CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented. Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester. Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access. The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door. FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community. In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.
Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys. Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork. Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees. Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.
Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director. Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester. The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.
It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall. If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

ROAD CLOSING REMINDER
North University Drive closing was delayed until Wednesday, February 7, 2007, but it is now closed to through traffic in both directions between New Poag Road and Lewis Road for the reconstruction of North University Drive at the New Poag Road intersection. Traffic on New Poag Road and the section of North University Drive between New Poag Road and Route 143 is not affected. Access to the cross country course, flying field and observatory is possible only from the Lewis Road barricade.
University traffic which normally uses the North University Drive entry may use Northwest University Drive as an alternate route.
The reconstruction of the intersection will depend on the weather but completion is anticipated by April 1, 2007. Keller Construction of Edwardsville is the contractor.
SCIENCE BUILDING
Update March 4, 2007: The Science Building program is currently in a holding pattern as the financial considerations are weighed. Once a decision on the project costs has been determined, the architects will resume their programming activities adjusting the program to match the approved budget.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update March 4, 2007: A potential delay in replacing the cafeteria grill exhaust system apparently has been avoided; the fan manufacturer has promised delivery of the replacement fan during the March Spring Break week. If the promise is kept, the fan can be replaced and the ceiling tile in the cafeteria also replaced. The sidewalk project is still delayed awaiting warmer weather.
Another new and interesting project on the ESLHEC campus is the Art-in Architecture program. This program is a State-mandated plan to utilize Illinois based artists to create new works of art at all State funded buildings. A small percentage of the appropriated project monies are set aside to hire an artist for each project. A committee from the University and community met and selected three artists to develop a concept. One of the three selected declined the invitation as he had to much work currently. The other two, Richard Hunt and Edna Petty, attended an informational meeting with the committee in which guidelines were provided to the artists. Basically, the artists have a free hand to develop their own concept; the committee requested only that the design be located in the quadrangle and that the work express the African-American experience. No other specifics were provided. Each artist will develop their concept and build a scale model of their proposal to show to the committee who will select one for final development. Three months are allowed for the model and concept and then a year is allowed to create the final artwork. Both artists were very excited about this commission.
DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update March 4, 2007: 115 doors have been installed in Founders Hall, 123 in Alumni. Despite short delays for various reasons, the project is moving along at a good pace.
MASS RELAMP
Update March 4, 2007: Founders and Alumni Halls are complete; workers move next to the basement of Peck Hall. Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out. Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.
ADA PROJECT
Update March 4, 2007: This project is in the mobilization stage; that is, the time the contractors are ordering materials, submitting product data and information for the architects to review, planning their construction schedule, and the myriad of details to prepare to start construction. Unfortunately, building occupants and users are aware of the proposed construction and are probably wondering if it is really going to begin!
MISCELLANEOUS
GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update March 4, 2007: The MetalSmithing project in the Art & Design Building is moving forward; the plumbing is installed and the cabinets and stainless steel countertop will follow.
The Alton Science Building entry stone work is nearly completed, but final work remains until the weather stays warm enough (above 45 degrees) for several days.
A pre-bid meeting was well attended for the Dental Clinic Sterilization project in the Alton Dental Clinic. Contractors looked over the project, asked questions, and made comments. The questions have to be formally submitted to the Purchasing Department who will have the architects and engineers respond to each. An addendum will be issued as needed to address the questions. Bids are due March 14, 2007.
MORE OF LIFE’S LESSONS
1 Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
2. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
3. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living or get busy dying.
4. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
5. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
6. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
7. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
8. NO ONE is in charge of your happiness except you.
9. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?”
10. Forgive everyone everything.
