SAFETY FIRST
Asbestos abatement begins in the corridors of Rendleman Hall on Monday, June 25, 2007, in the basement, first and second floors. Work is to be done IN THE EVENING ONLY AFTER 5 PM. Since the safety of SIUE students and workers is PARAMOUNT to Facilities Management, the following information (which bears repeating) was added from Rick Klein, Campus Architect:
Asbestos abatement takes place in the evening during a time when there are less people in the building simply as an additional precaution. The product being abated is floor tile. Workers wear protective clothing and use special equipment. The equipment heats and softens the floor tiles so they can be scraped up and removed. A special liquid is then poured over the remaining mastic (or glue) to dissolve it and the liquid is removed with equipment similar to a vacuum cleaner. Recent EPA Guidelines state that the only way to release the asbestos contained within the tiles is by grinding; no grinding will take place. In addition, the air is monitored during the entire procedure.
FM hopes this eases the minds of those concerned as well as those who may be experiencing abatement in the future. Please do not hesitate to phone 3711 if worries persist.

IN
THE WORKS
NEW CHEMISTRY LABS
Update June 24, 2007: The roof-top equipment and related duct work will be installed next week. The casework is due July 15th. Plumbers will finish their rough-in this week, and, once the casework is installed, return to install sinks and related plumbing. The aluminum storefront system is on site with the glass at the shop, but first needs the flooring finished, and flooring cannot be finished until the casework is installed. The electricians are roughed-in for the most part. The general will start to lay-in ceiling grid next week and the electrician will follow behind. OIT/Telecomm will begin installation of telephone and computer wiring soon.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update June 24, 2007: The four windows that required rebuilding of steel lintel and related brick work were installed and look original. The brick mason carefully removed the original bricks, cleaned them and reinstalled them as new matching bricks were unavailable. The contractor is ahead of schedule; however, because of class times and offices in use, the schedule is constantly being adjusted.
A project to renovate the exterior brickwork with tuckpointing was given to contractors to bid. The bid also includes crack repair, sidewalk replacement, enclosure of Building A stairwells to improve circulation, and a new metal roof on the sloped portion of Building C. Bids are due in Springfield for this CDB project on June 21, 2007.
One more project is replacement of the ceiling in the cafeteria of Building B. Previously, the exhaust fan at the hood had to be replaced. Repairs to the flashing on the vertical wall (leaks had damaged the ceiling tile) await the beginning of the exterior improvements package. Once the flashing is repaired, the ceiling can be replaced. However, partial replacement may proceed, leaving the water damaged area until the roof flashing is repaired.
ADA PROJECT
Update June 24, 2007: ADA work was halted for modification to the drawings and removal of waste material in Building 8280 on the Alton Campus. The elevator addition work should resume very soon; however, the contractor’s schedule was optimistic and completion of the addition is once again planned for this summer or early fall. Next May after graduation, interior work will be completed and the break-through to connect the two buildings will occur.
The contractor will begin to replace the chair lift with a limited use elevator in Dunham Hall; the work will involve an area just south of the Theater and the same location in the Lower Level as the floor must be cut through to create an elevator pit. Once finished, the elevator pit will be out of sight above the ceiling of the Lower Level.
SCIENCE BUILDING
Update June 24, 2007: The architects met with the Design Committee and had a short session with the Science Department Chairs this past week. The general layout of departments with designated areas for classrooms, laboratories, offices, restrooms, and circulation was show to the chairs for general discussion. The building height and relationship to the existing campus was reviewed and discussed; the building will be designed in accordance with the Campus Design Guidelines. Once the faculty returns and survives the first weeks of school, another review session of the plans will occur.
MODIFICATION ORDER PROJECTS
Update June 24, 2007: The Physiology Lab in Vadalabene Center is moving along on schedule. Those walking through corridors of Rendleman Hall may notice a change of flooring material; tile is being removed on the lower, first and second level corridors during the off hours. New rubber tile, similar to that installed on the third floor, will be installed; however, the tile is out for bid and it may be several weeks before the material arrives. The concrete sub floor may not be pretty, but it will function well enough until the material is received. The Print and Design area in the former Opapi Lounge is nearing completion; watch for notices from Morris University Center announcing the Grand Opening!
Another project in Morris University Center is a branch facility of the Bank of Edwardsville; the work is under construction by an outside contractor. Meanwhile, throughout campus, FM crews are repairing, painting, relamping, and remodeling as preparations for the fall semester move to completion.
