EXTERIOR KEYLESS ACCESS AVAILABLE JANUARY 8, 2007
CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Effective
January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours
access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus
will be implemented. Approximately two buildings will be activated each
month through the spring semester. Below is the activation schedule for
Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for
keyless access. The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping
the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door. FM and
OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE
community. In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior
keyless after-hours access Spring 2004.
Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees
currently issued exterior door keys. Key Control is coordinating
keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will
assist employees with any required paperwork. Prior to keyless
activation of a building, Key Control will request that department
contacts collect exterior keys from employees. Employees who have
questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at
650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.
Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access
because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the
appropriate administrative dean or director. Student access is limited
to one semester and requires renewal each semester. The approval form
is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.
It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and
white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the
SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall. If the magnetic stripe
is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to
work with the swipe units.

DOOR PROJECT IN
FOUNDERS AND ALUMNI HALLS
There
are stacks
of new doors through Founders and Alumni Halls. This week, many FM
carpenters were busy installing as many of the doors in classrooms as
possible. Once the students return to campus the week of January 7th,
FM carpenters will shift to replacing office doors. We will try to
complete the classroom door change-out during spring break. The crews
are moving the old lock cylinder into the new doors, so there is no
need to replace any keys when the new doors are installed.
ELECTRICAL RELAMPING PROGRAM
BEGINS
A
mass relamp of SIUE Edwardsville campus begins the week of January 7,
2007. FM electricians will be working the night shift from 11:00 p.m.
to 6:30 a.m. changing out lights in classrooms, offices, and public
areas. The first building scheduled is Alumni Hall, then Founders Hall,
progressing through all core campus then to the outlying buildings.
Each building relamp is estimated to take about 1-1/2 weeks. Concerns,
suggestions, or problems should be directed to Customer Service, ext.
3711.
CLEANING PROGRAM
Facilities
Management is starting a pioneer program January 2007 to improve the
quality of our cleaning program. We have contracted with an outside
firm to provide third party quality control inspections. It is expected
that this will result in uniform inspections and a common standard for
all areas. Our existing system had a problem with coworkers inspecting
the work of their fellow employees. As a result many factors biased the
inspection results. By having a trained inspector from a third party
firm do the inspections, the human bias has been largely eliminated.
The other major step is the electronic filing of the inspection reports
into a relational data base which will allow supervisors to see where
the problem areas are located. This should allow training to be
targeted where skills seem to be lacking. It will also allow
supervisory time to be focused on documented problem areas.
SIUE ENERGY SAVINGS
About eleven years ago the
University chose to participate in a pilot
program sponsored by the Governor's Office. Working with the
Department of Commerce and Community Affairs a contractor was selected
to
perform energy audits on the Edwardsville campus. As a result
of
that audit, about $4.5 million in projects to improve the energy
efficiency of the campus were completed. The projects had no
up-
front cost to the University and were funded by the resulting energy
savings. Now that the project is completely paid out, the project
summary
shows that during the ten years of the project life the savings of the
project exceeded the debt cost by over $2 million. The
project
continues to reduce the campus's energy cost by about $1 million per
year. As a result of the success of the pilot program the
laws were
changed in Illinois to allow State Agencies to use this approach to
help
deal with energy cost and deferred maintenance issues.
SNOW ROUTES
When the weather turns bad and snow
and ice create hazardous
conditions on campus walkways, FM’s first priority is
clearing entrances
marked as "SNOW ROUTES." Campus maps identifying snow route
entrances are available at:
http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/campmap/snow.htm
"Snow Route"
signs are posted at each of these
building entrances.
Main building entrances, especially the ADA accessible entrances, are
the
first to be cleared and receive more frequent attention. They are
generally the flattest entries to the buildings and foot traffic helps
keep them clear. Because Facilities must prioritize snow and ice
removal,
a favorite shortcut in and out of the building may NOT be the safest
route to take during inclement weather. All building occupants are
encouraged to used Snow Route entrances. Call ext. 3711 to
report
problems at snow route entrances or any dangerous road or walkway
conditions and crews will be dispatched as soon as possible.
BOIL ORDER SIGNAGE AT BUILDING ENTRANCES ONLY
To provide timely notification to
SIUE building occupants and
students, boil order signage will now be posted at
building
entrances only. As part of the
boil order
procedures, potable water stations will be provided
on the FIRST
floor of each building while the boil order is in effect.
Email
notification of the boil order issuance and termination will continue
to
be mailed to all faculty and staff.
Faculty are encouraged to pass this information to students as FM does
not have access to student email addresses. When a boil order
is in
effect, water should NOT be used as drinking water, washing dishes, or
making hot or cold drinks.
IN
THE WORKS
ADA PROJECT
Update
January
5, 2007:
The bids were received and are being
reviewed by CDB. At this time, the bids are slightly above the budget,
so
CDB will determine if the contingency is sufficient to start the job
with
the higher base costs. Once again, we wait for CDB to move.
MASONRY
RENOVATION
Update
January
5, 2007: We thought that the
contractor had just a few clean up issues, but we found that there are
numerous areas to be cleaned. We have needs both on the building where
the brick work has to be cleaned, and on the grounds, where debris has
to
be picked up and removed. We are considering some small additional work
for the remaining project money, but are first finalizing all the costs
to date to assure that some money is available. The
contractor has
some small amounts of clean up remaining, and one small area of brick
to
infill. Then, this project will be complete and in the books as they
say.
MISCELLANEOUS
GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update
January
5, 2007: A contract has been issued
to a sheet metal contractor to build an exhaust hood, furnish and
install
ductwork from the hood to the roof, and install an exhaust fan. Once
the
hood is installed, the carpenters and plumbers will be installing the
new
cabinets, sink, and stainless steel counter tops. All of this work is
occurring in the former vending machine area and the adjacent locker
room. This area will be completed, and then the renovation work will
begin in the older metalsmithing area.
DOOR
REPLACEMENT
Update
January 5th, 2006:The
classroom doors have are
being replaced in anticipation of students returning for the spring
semester. Eventually, most doors along the main corridors and the
atrium
will be replaced along with the entry doors to the stairways. One major
benefit is that the stair doors will have small glass panels to allow
people to see if some one is on the other side of the door. Likewise,
most classrooms and office entries will have a glass panel.

HALLS")
A REMINDER
- NEW SYSTEM, A FEW CHANGES
Facilities
Management is breaking in a new work order system, and the
help of the Campus Community is needed. When submitting a
work
order electronically, departments should note the routine number on the
email request. A routine number is assigned to the
department's
account number for the fiscal year. Departments requiring assistance
should contact Work Order at ext. 3711. When faxing
a Service
Requisition or completing a GIR/MOD form, please include both the FAS
and
the AIS account numbers. FM is in process of changing billing
from
FAS to AIS and appreciates this assistance.
