WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“More Church Bulletin Bloopers” just before the Service Numbers

A great way to lose weight is to eat naked in front of a mirror.  Restaurants will almost always throw you out before you can eat too much.
Frank Varano

WHAT’S NEW?

ONE OF OUR OWN
Thomas E. Raglin of Alton, a Building Service Worker for Facilities Management, will receive the University Humanitarian Award at the Martin Luther King celebration on February 6, 2007.  The awards are given each year to recognize those who exemplify the philosophy of nonviolent social change as demonstrated by Rev. King.  Mr. Raglin, a retired schoolteacher, serves on the board of the Alton Museum, is active in his church, and works to influence the lives of young adults in the Alton Area.  Debra Barnard, his supervisor, says Mr. Raglin serves as a “real inspiration” to those who work with him.  Congratulations to Mr. Raglin; FM is proud to have him as an employee!

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented.  Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester.  Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access.  The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door.  FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community.  In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access Spring, 2004.

Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys.  Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork.  Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees.  Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.

Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director.  Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester.  The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.

It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall.  If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus.  The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039.  Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

ROAD CLOSING REMINDER
North University Drive will be closed to through traffic in both directions between New Poag Road and Lewis Road beginning Monday, February 5, 2007, for the reconstruction of North University Drive at the New Poag Road intersection.  Traffic on New Poag Road and the section of North University Drive between New Poag Road and Route 143 will not be affected.  Access to the cross country course, flying field and observatory will be possible only from the Lewis Road barricade.

University traffic which normally uses the North University Drive entry may use Northwest University Drive as an alternate route.

The reconstruction of the intersection will depend on the weather but completion is anticipated by April 1, 2007.  Keller Construction of Edwardsville is the contractor.

CAN’T WAIT FOR SPRING…
Looking at the new plantings as one enters campus from Highway 270, just imagine how beautiful this spring and the next two or three springs will be!  In addition to the current changes, Grounds will be planting wildflowers this spring.  Another of the plantings:

Signature Grass
Prairie Drop Seed has a mature height of 2-3’ and adapts well to dry soils.  It is a Native American prairie plant that produces a magnificent fountain of fine textured, emerald green leaves, adding a touch of elegance to any planting.  Considered by many to be the most handsome of the prairie grasses, it makes a well defined and distinctive border when planted 18-26” apart.

SNOW ROUTES
When the weather turns bad and the university gets snow and ice on campus walkways, FM’s first priority is clearing entrances marked as "SNOW ROUTES." Campus maps identifying snow route entrances are available at: http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/campmap/snow.htm "Snow Route" signs are posted at each of these building entrances.
Main building entrances, especially the ADA accessible entrances, are the first to be cleared and receive more frequent attention. They are generally the flattest entries to the buildings and foot traffic helps keep them clear. Because Facilities must prioritize snow and ice removal, a favorite shortcut in and out of the building may NOT be the safest route to take during inclement weather. All building occupants are encouraged to used Snow Route entrances.

Call ext. 3711 to report problems at snow route entrances or any dangerous road or walkway conditions and crews will be dispatched as soon as possible.

IN THE WORKS

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update February 4, 2007:  A second round of meetings was held with the faculty of the Science Department to discuss Teaching Laboratories primarily.  Some general discussion of the Research Laboratories also occurred, and the architects and lab specialists are developing some design concepts for further review.  Overall, this project is still in the program development phase, and issues such as location of rooms, what is in the new building and what remains in the existing, have not been discussed.  A program of the required spaces, plus a review of associated costs, will lead to the next step which is a study of room relationships, that is, which rooms are located where.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update February 4, 2007:  The project to replace windows in Buildings A & B that have not been replaced in the last several years has been bid and it looks like the costs are in line.  Many of these existing windows leak air and water and allow noise in from the outside, especially those located on the west side along I-64.  When the two windows blown out by the wind storm last summer were replaced, the noise was almost completely eliminated.  CDB will issue a notice of award, and the contractor plans to start the material ordering process once he knows he will be awarded the contract.

CDB was also receiving bids to replace the exhaust fan on the cafeteria kitchen grill and the cafeteria ceiling tile.  Bid results will be received early in the week.

DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update February 4, 2007:  92 doors have been installed in Founders Hall, 81 in Alumni.  Despite short delays for various reasons, the project is moving along at a good pace.

MASS RELAMP
Update February 4, 2007:  The mass re-lamp is complete in Alumni Hall and will move to the basement of Founders Hall next.  If work continues to move at the same pace, Founders Hall should take a week to complete.  Naturally, since the re-lamp is approximately 18 months behind schedule, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

ADA PROJECT
NO CHANGE-Update February 4, 2007: CDB continues to process this project through their review procedures as they increase the funding to allow for all the proposed work to be included.  A Notice of Award should be issued within the next month, and the contractor may be on site in March or April.

MASONRY RENOVATION
NO CHANGE-Update February 4, 2007:  The cold and wet weather has slowed the contractor’s clean up procedure.  The piles of brick will be removed by the manufacturer.  Other debris will be picked up by the contractor.  A few locations require some cleaning of the brick and tuckpointing.  Due to the very small amount of money remaining in the project, it is doubtful that much more will be done.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update February 4, 2007: The sheet metal contractor is installing a transfer duct; that is, a duct through the wall that allows air to be drawn from an “outside” space into the MetalSmithing room and exhausted out the new exhaust hood.  Once that transfer duct is completed, the outside contractor will have completed his assignment, and Facilities will begin installation of cabinets, countertops, and the sink.

NO CHANGE-The contractor working on the installation of new stone steps and landings at the main entrance to the Science Building on the Alton campus was able to use one of the “warmer” and dry days to tuckpoint the existing stone retaining walls around the entrance.  A couple of dry days are needed for acid cleaning of the stone work, but the weather forecast is not too promising at this time.  The cleaning and a seal coat are all that remain to complete the entry.

MORE CHURCH BULLETIN BLOOPERS

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church.  So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

The ushers will come forward and take our ties and offerings.

The rosebud on the altar this morning is to announce the birth of David Alan Belzer, the sin of Reverend and Mrs. Julius Belzer.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the church basement on Friday at 7 p.m.  The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Don’t let worry kill you off; let the church help.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person(s) you want remembered.

Let us join David and Lisa in the celebration of their wedding and bring their happiness to a conclusion.

Helpers are needed!  Please sing up on the information sheep.

Diana and Don request your presents at their wedding.

The concert in Fellowship Hall was a great success.  Special thanks are due to the minister’s daughter, who labored the whole evening at the piano, which as usual fell upon her.
