WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Funny Signs” just before the Service Numbers

We could certainly slow the aging process down if
it had to work its way through Congress.

WHAT’S NEW?

NEW FACE IN EDWARDSVILLE
Facilities Management is pleased to announce the selection of Janice LaRiviere as the new Assistant Director for Building Maintenance for Facilities Management.  Janice, who previously served as Assistant Director for Alton Operations, has been acting in the position since October of 2006.  Welcome to the Edwardsville Campus, Janice!

RENDLEMAN HALL FITNESS PROGRAM ENDS
UPDATE February 25, 2007:  Building occupants of Rendleman Hall who have been trudging the stairs for a while will be glad to know that, per Otis Elevator, repairs to the elevator in Rendleman Hall should be complete by Monday, February 26, 2007.

THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus.  The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039.  Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

IN THE WORKS

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented.  Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester.  Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access.  The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door.  FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community.  In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.

Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys.  Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork.  Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees.  Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.

Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director.  Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester.  The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.

It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall.  If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

ROAD CLOSING REMINDER
North University Drive closing was delayed until Wednesday, February 7, 2007, but it is now closed to through traffic in both directions between New Poag Road and Lewis Road for the reconstruction of North University Drive at the New Poag Road intersection.  Traffic on New Poag Road and the section of North University Drive between New Poag Road and Route 143 is not affected.  Access to the cross country course, flying field and observatory is possible only from the Lewis Road barricade.

University traffic which normally uses the North University Drive entry may use Northwest University Drive as an alternate route.

The reconstruction of the intersection will depend on the weather but completion is anticipated by April 1, 2007.  Keller Construction of Edwardsville is the contractor.

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update February 25, 2007:  Adjustments in the program and related budget have been finalized, and the information passed on to others for review and to determine the next step.  The architects are awaiting the final determination of the budget.  Related to the Science Building, the documents for the proposed Chemistry laboratories in the Bio-Tech Laboratory Building in University Park have been submitted to the Board of Trustee’s architect for review.  Approximately three weeks will pass before the architect issues his review comments; the design architects will modify the drawings as needed and respond to each comment from the Board Architect.  Once drawings are revised, the project goes out for bids.  Since casework has been ordered, this project will probably be completed in time for fall semester usage.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update February 25, 2007:  Two separate contractors will be working on the ESLHEC campus over the next few weeks.  One contractor will replace the exhaust fan in the cafeteria grill, replace the ceiling tile and paint the ceiling grid in the cafeteria during the Community College Spring Break.  Another contractor will install a sidewalk from the end of James R. Thompson Boulevard down to the service entrance of the cafeteria as well as add a sidewalk around the flagpoles.

Another new and interesting project on the ESLHEC campus is the Art-in Architecture program.  This program is a State-mandated plan to utilize Illinois based artists to create new works of art at all State funded buildings.  A small percentage of the appropriated project monies are set aside to hire an artist for each project.  A committee from the University and community met and selected three artists to develop a concept.  One of the three selected declined the invitation as he had to much work currently.  The other two, Richard Hunt and Edna Petty, attended an informational meeting with the committee in which guidelines were provided to the artists.  Basically, the artists have a free hand to develop their own concept; the committee requested only that the design be located in the quadrangle and that the work express the African-American experience.  No other specifics were provided.  Each artist will develop their concept and build a scale model of their proposal to show to the committee who will select one for final development.  Three months are allowed for the model and concept and then a year is allowed to create the final artwork.  Both artists were very excited about this commission.

DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update February 25, 2007:  115 doors have been installed in Founders Hall, 123 in Alumni.  Despite short delays for various reasons, the project is moving along at a good pace.

MASS RELAMP
Update February 25, 2007:  The third floor of Founders Hall is nearly complete; workers move next to the basement of Peck Hall.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

ADA PROJECT
Update February 18, 2007:  The pre-construction conference was held with L. Wolf Construction (general contractor) and Wissehr Electric (electrical contractor) to start the ADA Upgrade project.  Three major components of this project are the addition of an elevator and stairwell building at Building 8280 on the Alton Campus, addition of accessible toilet stalls in the Men’s and Women’s Restrooms in the ERTC, and replacement of the chair lift south of the Theater in Dunham Hall with a limited use, limited access elevator.  Other work will take place in several Edwardsville campus buildings and includes the replacement of round door knobs with lever handles for office suite entrances plus the extension of the fire alarm system in the Vadalabene Center.  The contractors are putting together their proposed schedule which will be reviewed for timeliness and potential conflicts.  Additional information identifying the times and locations the contractors will work will be reported as work progresses.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update February 25, 2007:    The MetalSmithing project in the Art & Design Building continues.  In the former vending machine area and adjacent locker room, the stainless steel countertop should be delivered within the next two weeks and once the rough plumbing is installed, the cabinets and countertop can follow.

The nice weather has been a pleasant interlude, but the rain forecast during this period has prevented the contractor from completing the work on the entry steps and landings at the Alton Science Building.  Once the contractor has finished his work, an observation of the workmanship will be conducted and any corrections noted on a punch list.  After the contractor is finished, FM will seal the stone and mortar, another weather-dependent operation.

The renovation project in the Dental Clinic Sterilization area has been issued for bids.  Contractors are picking up drawings and will meet early in the week for a pre-bid meeting.  That meeting will describe the proposed work and give the contractors time to look at the construction area.  Any time work is done internally, the more the contractors can see, the better the bids and work down the road.
