WEEKLY UPDATES
FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“To Save or not to Save…” just before the Service Numbers
You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
Abraham Lincoln
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.
George Washington
WHAT’S
NEW?
IN MEMORY…
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Monday, February 12, 2007, to honor Captain Kevin C. Landeck, United States Army, 26, from Wheaton, IL, killed February 2, 2007, in the war in Iraq.
RECYCLING REMINDER
ALL newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs, mail, office paper, school paper, envelopes with and without windows CAN be recycled.
Tissues or paper towels, paper cups and plates, paper food containers, waxed paper, carbon paper, phone books, thermal fax paper, and gummed labels CANNOT be recycled.
Staples and paper clips are acceptable; please remove plastic wrappers before recycling newspapers. A number of desk side recycling containers recently became available. Some of the containers say ‘for aluminum” on the side, but the Building Service Workers will be aware that they are being used for paper recycling. Additional trash containers are available as well. Any department interested in additional containers should contact Building Services at extension 2068 and the container(s) will be delivered.
WHAT GOES UP…
As most readers of this column already know, the elevator is down in Rendleman Hall and has been for a while. Originally, the repair company, Otis Elevator, reported that the governor assembly needed replaced; as it turned out, the assembly is quite obsolete, and parts are not readily available. However, the upgraded assembly has been received by Otis, and will be installed shortly.
CAN’T WAIT FOR SPRING…
Looking at the new plantings as one enters campus from Highway 270, just imagine how beautiful this spring and the next two or three springs will be! In addition to the current changes, Grounds will be planting wildflowers this spring. Another of the plantings:
Plant Name: Washington Hawthorn
Growth Habit: Low-branched tree with wide spreading thorny branches densely set. Slow to medium growth rate.
Landscape Value: Often grown as a tree or shrub form. Use as single specimen, screens, barrier plant or hedge. Many people remark about the attractive fruit and ask the plant's identity. The tree should not be used in high traffic areas as the thorns present a problem.
Leaf color: Bronze-red to purplish red in fall.
20-30' high, 20-35' wide at maturity
Additional note: DO NOT USE this plant in the landscape where small children are apt to play.
SNOW ROUTES
When the weather turns bad and the university gets snow and ice on campus walkways, FM’s first priority is clearing entrances marked as “SNOW ROUTES.” Campus maps identifying snow route entrances are available at: http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/campmap/snow.htm “Snow Route” signs are posted at each of these building entrances.
Main building entrances, especially the ADA accessible entrances, are the first to be cleared and receive more frequent attention. They are generally the flattest entries to the buildings and foot traffic helps keep them clear. Because Facilities must prioritize snow and ice removal, a favorite shortcut in and out of the building may NOT be the safest route to take during inclement weather. All building occupants are encouraged to used Snow Route entrances.
Call ext. 3711 to report problems at snow route entrances or any dangerous road or walkway conditions and crews will be dispatched as soon as possible.
THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.
IN
THE WORKS
SAFETY FIRST!!
Serious violations of safety and building codes can be observed walking through campus buildings. Many fire doors are propped open, creating a potential fire hazard should an emergency occur. If a fire occurs, pathways in exiting the building must be maintained for safe passage for ALL building occupants. Chairs used to hold doors open were observed (and removed); one chair was used to keep open the stair door. During a fire, the smoke would fill the stairway and cause numerous injuries and, potentially, deaths. Yes, it is more convenient to have stairway, classroom and corridor doors open, but fire and smoke will easily spread throughout the building and the exit ways, leading to serious consequences. BE AWARE; keep fire doors closed. The life you save may be your own!
One alternative to propping doors pen is to have a magnetic hold open installed on the door. This is a device that allows the door to be opened, but in the event of a fire alarm, the door swings shut to prevent/reduce the spread of fire and smoke. The devices can be installed by Facilities Management at a cost of $500 each. No, FM is not trying to “scare up business;” the safety of students, faculty and staff is of primary concern. If a department feels keeping a fire door open is essential, a Service Requisition should be sent to Facilities for installation of a magnetic hold-open.
CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented. Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester. Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access. The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door. FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community. In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.
Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys. Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork. Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees. Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.
Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director. Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester. The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.
It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall. If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

ROAD CLOSING REMINDER
North University Drive closing was delayed until Wednesday, February 7, 2007, but it is now closed to through traffic in both directions between New Poag Road and Lewis Road for the reconstruction of North University Drive at the New Poag Road intersection. Traffic on New Poag Road and the section of North University Drive between New Poag Road and Route 143 is not affected. Access to the cross country course, flying field and observatory is possible only from the Lewis Road barricade.
University traffic which normally uses the North University Drive entry may use Northwest University Drive as an alternate route.
The reconstruction of the intersection will depend on the weather but completion is anticipated by April 1, 2007. Keller Construction of Edwardsville is the contractor.
SCIENCE BUILDING
Update February 18, 2007: Study of the budget and space assignments continues. The project is complex in meeting the needs of six departments with somewhat diverse requirements, a set budget, and site conditions as well as the need to renovate the existing facility. The situation is comparable to a juggler flipping a dozen knives!
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update February 18, 2007: The Spring Break week for the Community College will be utilized by the contractor to install the new exhaust fan in the kitchen grille and to replace the ceiling in the cafeteria. Another project to install concrete sidewalks is delayed by the cold weather and likely won’t occur until spring warmth returns. A pre-construction meeting on the third project, replacing the old windows in Buildings A and B, will be held next week. The window replacement project will not begin until after school is dismissed in May, not because of the students since temporary arrangements could be made, but because of the lead time required for the windows. Though the contractor will make every effort to expedite the material delivery, he will still be hampered by the overall market.
DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update February 18, 2007: 111 doors have been installed in Founders Hall, 115 in Alumni. Despite short delays for various reasons, the project is moving along at a good pace.
MASS RELAMP
Update February 18, 2007: The first floor of Founders Hall is close to completion; workers move next to the second floor. Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out. Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.
ADA PROJECT
Update February 18, 2007: The pre-construction meeting to kick off the ADA project has been scheduled for next week. One important thing to be determined in this meeting is the proposed schedule of construction and the order in which the work will take place. Once a general schedule is established, that information will be included in future ClipBoards; as the old saying goes, “Stay tuned for additional information.”
MISCELLANEOUS
GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update February 18, 2007: The cabinets and countertops have been ordered, but no delivery date has been promised yet. Once the cabinets arrive, they will be installed along with the plumbing to eventually connect to the sink. The sink will not be installed until the countertop arrives and can be installed.
The cold weather plus the snow and ice have delayed the completion of the stone entry at the Alton Science Building. Unfortunately, it looks like March at the earliest for completion.
NO CHANGE--Another project ready to go for bids is the expansion of the sterilization area in the Dental Clinic. The addition of the 24 operatory units last fall has increased the need for more preparation, sterilization, and return of the used components for the Dental students working on patients. Work is scheduled around the summer close down; that is, when the Dental students are allowed three weeks away from the program. The contractors have to renovate and change the sterilization area during the time the students are away, and have it operational when they return. Preliminary work will take place, and some spaces will be renovated prior to this July, start of the student downtime, in order to be ready to finish the renovation in the allotted time.
To Save or not to Save…
(Just a little humor to commemorate President’s Day, with no particular political agenda; substitute the name of the president of choice.)
One day, one of the Presidents of the United States was out jogging and accidentally fell from a ridge into a very cold river. Three boys, playing along the river, saw the accident. Without a second thought, they jumped in the water and dragged the wet president out of the river.
After cleaning up he said, "Boys, you saved the President of the United States today. You deserve a reward. You name it; I'll give it to you."
The first boy said, "Please, I'd like a ticket to Disneyland!"
"I'll personally hand it to you," said the president.
"I'd like a pair of Nike Air Turbos," the second boy said.
"I'll buy them myself and give them to you," said the grateful president.
"And I'd like a wheelchair with a stereo in it," said the third boy.
"I'll personally ... wait a second, son, you're not handicapped!"
"No -- but I will be when my dad finds out I saved you from drowning."
