WEEKLY UPDATES
FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
April Foolery just before the Service Numbers
Real friends are those who, when you feel you've made a fool of yourself, don't feel you've done a permanent job.

WHAT’S
NEW?
GOOSE INFO
Thanks to Ralph Axtell, Biological Science, who reminded FM that the foul-tempered geese attacking students were most likely males protecting the females, not the females protecting their nests. In either case, please remind students not to approach any geese this time of year.
THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS--REMINDER
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date is March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039. Key inventories are still being accepted, but the compilation of the list of non-responders for the appropriate Vice Chancellor will begin soon. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.
IN
THE WORKS
CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update March 18, 2007: Keyless access system activation has been completed for Founders and Alumni Halls. The planned activation for the Vadalabene Center has been delayed one week. Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201. FM appreciates the patience of the University community.
Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented. Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester. Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access. The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door. FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community. In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.
Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys. Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork. Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees. Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.
Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director. Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester. The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.
It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall. If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

NORTH UNIVERSITY ROAD CLOSING UPDATE
The contractor should be paving early next week; the completion date of April 13, 2007, seems probable.
DOOR REPLACEMENT
Update April 1, 2007: The door replacement project is complete!
MASS RELAMP
Update April 1, 2007: Lamps are currently being changed in the Science Building; Peck Hall is complete. Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights. Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out. Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.
SCIENCE BUILDING
Update April 1, 2007: Tentative meetings are being discussed with plans to meet around the end of April. The financial impact of the improved appropriation and how the additional monies will impact the current program will be discussed.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update April 1, 2007: The new exhaust fan was installed in the grill hood of the cafeteria. The testing and balance contractor followed and adjusted assorted supply grills and exhaust grills to help direct the air properly out of the space. After an adjustment to a supply air fan, the fan portion of the project will be complete. Already the cafeteria staff has noted a vast improvement in the removal of cooking smoke. Eventually, the cafeteria ceiling tile will be replaced and the ceiling grid repainted to restore its fresh, clean appearance.
Shop drawings have been submitted and approved by the architect and the order for the replacement windows has been placed. However, the order does have an 8 to 12 week delivery schedule which will delay work until the current semester is dismissed.
100% Review Documents have been submitted by the A/E to the University and CDB for review. This project will tuckpoint the brick walls, fix a bad wall leak above the cafeteria, replace the clerestory windows in Building C, and enclose the open stairways in Building A. Barring unexpected corrections or changes, current plans call for the documents to be out for bid in April with construction to start sometime in June.
ADA PROJECT
Update April 1, 2007: The contractors had been delayed in beginning their work as they submitted all required paperwork to CDB. That paperwork was completed and contractors are on campus. The electrical contractor is starting to upgrade the fire alarm system in the Vadalabene Center; this work is throughout the building, so be aware they will be in nearly every room of the Center. The general contractor is adding an elevator and stairwell to the east side of Building 8280 on the Alton Campus, though he has been delayed while the issue of removing the first floor air conditioning unit is studied and a workable solution is found. Many of the buildings will have ADA upgrade work; each will be reported in the ClipBoard. The major work is the fire alarm system in the Vadalabene Center, the elevator addition at 8280, an enclosed chair lift on the south side of the theater in Dunham Hall, and upgrades to the ERTC restrooms. Several buildings, such as Peck Hall, Rendleman Hall, and Dunham Hall, will have door hardware replaced primarily at corridor doors leading into office suites.
MISCELLANEOUS
GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update April 1, 2007: The School of Pharmacy will be expanding into some neighboring space beginning in July; that is, construction will begin in July. The design is currently being developed. The Science Department is adding two Chemistry laboratories in the Bio Tech Lab Building in University Park to serve Nursing students. Several other departments are considering remodeling projects, also.
The Chancellor’s release of monies last week has resulted in a number of GIR/MOD projects. (NOTE: FM will be changing the name of the GIR (General Improvement Request) to the more suitable RFE (Request for Estimate) soon. Projects include replacement of the bleachers in the Vadalabene Center (a project which also involves adding offices and classrooms under those new bleachers), repaving a portion of the Morris Bike Trail, safety improvements to the Early Childhood Center, and a number of various office renovations/modifications.
APRIL FOOLS
BET THE TYPISTS KNEW SOMETHING WAS REMISS…
In 1977 the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement in honor of the tenth anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer's terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that then gripped the British tabloids in the following decades.
