WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
"Remember" just before the Service Numbers

In Memory, Virginia Tech,
Monday, April 16, 2007

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.”
St. Francis of Assissi

WHAT’S NEW?

NORTH UNIVERSITY DRIVE IS OPEN!

NORTH UNIVERSITY DRIVE LANDSCAPING
Now that the improvements to North University Drive are complete, landscaping begins.  Steve Brandenburg, Assistant Director for Building Services and Grounds, has shared information on some of the plantings.  In order to preserve the existing wooded character and enhance the seasonal interest of the North University Drive entrance, the campus signature native grass, Prairie Drop Seed, and various wild flowers will be sown.  Hillside planting will include the Sugar Maple, a tree with beautiful fall color and a pleasing growth habit, AND the official “city tree” of Edwardsville.  In addition, the White and Redbud trees that beautify campus in the spring with their pink and white blooms will be planted.  It sounds like there will be beauty everywhere on the SIUE campus!

THE CURRENT KEY TO ACCESS--REMINDER
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus.  The return date WAS March 1, 2007, to Campus Box 1039.  The compilation of the list of non-responders for the appropriate Vice Chancellor will begin soon.  Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

IN MEMORY
Campus flags flew at half-staff from Tuesday, April 17, 2007, to Sunday, April 22, 2007, in honor of the victims of the Virginia Tech. tragedy.

IN THE WORKS

CAMPUS GOING KEYLESS
Update April 22, 2007: It was reported in error that installation in Founders and Alumni Hall was complete; the sliding door on the south side of Alumni Hall has not been connected.  Any questions should be directed to Key Control at extension 3201.  FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

Effective January, 2007, a schedule to change from keyed to keyless after-hours access to the exterior doors of main buildings on Edwardsville campus will be implemented.  Approximately two buildings will be activated each month through the spring semester.  Below is the activation schedule for Edwardsville campus buildings and the exterior doors planned for keyless access.  The SIUE I.D. card is used to gain entrance by swiping the card through a hardware unit attached adjacent to the door.  FM and OIT are working together to ensure a smooth transition for the SIUE community.  In fact, the Science Building transitioned to exterior keyless after-hours access spring, 2004.

Keyless access for exterior doors will be granted to all employees currently issued exterior door keys.  Key Control is coordinating keyless access implementation with departmental contacts that will assist employees with any required paperwork.  Prior to keyless activation of a building, Key Control will request that department contacts collect exterior keys from employees.  Employees who have questions or problems with access may contact Key Control at 650-3201/650-3200 or email jlesick@siue.edu or kmurphy@siue.edu.

Graduate or other students requiring after-hours building access because of assigned job or class duties require approval from the appropriate administrative dean or director.  Student access is limited to one semester and requires renewal each semester.  The approval form is available at www.siue.edu/FORMS.

It is recommended that employees who still have the original (red and white) SIUE I.D. card obtain the new I.D. card at no charge from the SIUE Service Center located in Rendleman Hall.  If the magnetic stripe is worn on a new I.D. card, a reissued SIUE I.D. may be required to work with the swipe units.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update April 22, 2007: The contractor has made steady progress despite bad and/or cold weather; clean up should be completed in early May.

MASS RELAMP
Update April 22, 2007: Lamps have all been changed in the Science Building; work has moved to Dunham Hall. Work has moved a little slower as the electricians encounter more ballasts that need changed as well as lights.  Naturally, since the re-lamp started 18 months later than scheduled, there will be “hot spots” where lamps have already burned out.  Electricians will continue to address these problems; report any dark spaces to Customer Service at 3711.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER (ESLHEC)
Update April 22, 2007: The sidewalk contractor is waiting for a week of good weather to begin the installation of some sidewalks; one from the end of James R. Thompson Boulevard to the kitchen rear entry, and another at the flagpoles.

The window contractor has developed a schedule for removal and installation of the windows in Building A and B.  Work is scheduled to begin May 18, 2007, and expected to be completed by November 1, 2007.  Surprisingly, over 100 windows need to be replaced.

The 100% contract documents for the Exterior Enhancement Project have been reviewed by Facilities and comments sent to CDB.  A number of people at CDB are reviewing the documents.

Now that the exhaust fan is working well in the cafeteria grill hood, the design to replace the ceiling tile is moving forward.  Eventually, all of the ceiling tile will be replaced and the grid cleaned and repainted.  In the raised ceiling area near the main cafeteria entrance, however, the old tile will be reinstalled until the source of the roof leak is found and repaired.  New tile will be provided by the contractor who does the replacement project, but will be stored until the leak is cured.

ADA PROJECT
Update April 22, 2007:  A brick and a stone to match the existing materials at Building 8280, SDM, Alton Campus, have been selected.  The best selection for the brick, based upon color and texture, will result in a different size brick being used.  Most people, except those who read and remember this report, won’t notice the difference since the color will be similar to the original.  The stone was actually easier to match in color and one was found that is very similar.  Demolition work inside the basement is complete and some base concrete for the addition has been poured.  At last, good weather for construction work!

SCIENCE BUILDING
Update April 22, 2007: The faculty and staff will meet with the architects and lab designers this week to review the program.  A brief meeting was held last week to clarify where each department would be located.  Also, Gloria Atkins was introduced to the architects and faculty.  Gloria will be coordinating scheduling of spaces and the related moving, furniture and equipment purchases, and other behind the scenes efforts so necessary to a smooth transition to new facilities.

REMEMBER

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plan’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
