On Thursday, October 18, 2007, AmerenIP lost power to an underground feed line to the Metcalf Theater and the Early Childhood Center. Garry Sammons, FM’s Electrical Foreman, was notified and met with AmerenIP to assist with determining the extent of the problem and how it would affect the buildings. The ECC was without air conditioning but still had minimal lighting. Affected children/students/teachers/helpers/professors in both buildings adapted very well to the difficulty. FM maintained communication with both buildings as AmerenIP kept Garry informed of the progression of work.
In a situation where power is completely lost to a major building on campus and evacuation is necessary, an evacuation plan is in place at: http://www.siue.edu/SAFETY/#evacuation
Within a very few hours, power was restored, AmerenIP completed their repairs, information was communicated to those affected, and the rehearsal planned in the Metcalf Theater went on as scheduled. No one can ever say SIUE people are not adaptable and resourceful! As always, FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

Edwardsville 2007 Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the
summer are well aware of the changes in
trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and
recycling is now picked up every other week; one
week trash, the other recycling. The Fall 2007
pick-up schedule is:
Office recycling: October 1, 15 and 29;
November 12 and 26; and December 10
Office
trash: October
8 and 22; November 5 and 19; and December 3 and 17
Call Steve Brandenburg at ext. 2069 for assistance.
AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL…
Traditionally, once a year the myriad of people at SIUE who help make sure all the ‘t’s’ are crossed and all the ‘i’s’ dotted (Civil Service folks) spend an evening together. Usually, they share a meal and some entertainment, and have a chance to visit together outside of work. Retirees are invited and a committee from within the University is responsible for planning.
The Civil Service Banquet was held Thursday, October 18, 2007, and the committee outdid themselves. The event took place at the Moose Lodge in Edwardsville where a delicious meal of chicken and roast beef was served. Attendance was very high; more than one hundred of SIUE’s finest were there to enjoy the meal and delicious homemade desserts provided by the committee. In addition to creating a delightful atmosphere during the party, some decorations (provided by committee member Sherry Guardiola) were given as door prizes. Winning gifts donated by local merchants served as one of the highlights of the evening in addition to the storytelling by Matthew Paris and magic (yes, really, magic and it was FUN!!) by Jesse Gernigin.
For the people from Facilities Management, the banquet presents an opportunity to meet many people they know only by phone. Though the crafts and management of FM meet and greet the campus community daily, many building occupants of Supporting Services Building (and this includes those from Purchasing, Transportation and Records Management) are not on campus a great deal. The chance to meet and greet their co-workers in a comfortable setting is truly enjoyable. KUDOS to the committee for a job well done!

Project Updates

For readers who may have missed these updates last week…
Vadalabene Gymnasium Improvements
The design to replace the existing bleachers is progressing
as the program has been completed and schematic designs have
been developed. The new space created under the
bleachers will include a new Women’s Restroom with at least
twice as many fixtures currently available, a visitor’s
locker room, storage space, 2 classrooms for 49 students,
graduate assistant offices, and offices for the basketball
coaching staff. Kinesiology will gain badminton courts
and volleyball courts for their classes.
Plans for new Wrestling / Volleyball Center on Stadium
Drive
A new Wrestling/Volleyball Center is being designed and the
construction documents are over 50% complete. This
facility will be around 75,000 square feet and feature an
open court that can handle 10 wrestling mats at one
time. Volleyball will have 5 courts available when the
court is set up that way. Locker room facilities,
offices, and practice courts are included. A nice open
lobby will provide good circulation before and after
matches, as well as having a concession area for the
goodies. The building will be located on Stadium
Drive, northeast of Korte Stadium and the Women’s Softball
Field. Parking will be in the existing parking lot,
but the entrance from Stadium Drive will be new and located
north of the existing driveways. In fact, the current
driveway at the north end of the parking lot will be
removed.

Landscaping Upgrades:
A contract has been awarded to add stone landscaping
retaining walls on the hillside adjacent to the Wishing
Well. A pair of parallel walls will extend north from
the Wishing Well and end near the steps to the Clinic.
A separate single wall will extend south of the Wishing Well
and terminate near the sidewalk. This initial phase of
the project will erect the walls and a landscaping plan will
be developed to anchor the hillside with plantings.
The new lower level will be leveled with decorative gravel
base, and “stepping stone” pads installed for tables and
chairs with some walking pads connecting them. This
area is shady during the summer mid-day and will provide a
pleasant outside space for students, faculty, and staff.
