THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY
All three SIUE campuses will be closed beginning Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007, through Sunday, November 25, 2007. This means buildings are locked; departments with different hours have published a schedule and have it posted or have posted it on the faculty/staff listserv and have informed Building Engineers of their schedule. Please be sure to share these schedules with students remaining on campus; those with questions or those who are unsure are advised to phone the department.
THE GREAT ILLINOIS SMOKE-OUT?
By Illinois law, beginning January 1, 2008, smoking will be prohibited in a public place or place of employment or within 15 feet of an entrance to a public place or place of employment, unless exempted by the act. No person may smoke in any vehicle owned, leased or operated by the state or a political subdivision of the state.
Also required by law, each public place and place of employment where smoking is prohibited must have posted at every entrance a conspicuous sign clearly stating that smoking is prohibited. All ashtrays must be removed from areas where smoking is prohibited.
In the days before the new law takes effect, the signs will be posted on University doors and ash urns moved to the appropriate places.
Readers who smoke are asked to remember this is a state law and not a University one. There is nothing FM can do except what is required by state law. A very good summary of the new Illinois no smoking law can be found at: www.idph.state.il.us/tobacco/Smoke_Free_Act_q&a.htm
The Illinois Department of Public Health, local public health departments and local law enforcement agencies are required to enforce the act. These agencies may assess fines for violations. The Illinois Department of Public Health will establish a telephone number by January 1, 2008, for persons to call and register a complaint.
Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the summer are well aware of the changes in trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and recycling is now picked up every other week; one week trash, the other recycling. The Fall 2007 pick-up schedule is:
Office recycling: November 26 and December 10
Office trash: November 19 and December 3 and 17

Project Updates

For those who may have missed the last ClipBoard:
Edwardsville Campus
A number of construction projects are planned for next spring following graduation in May. Students, faculty and staff will need to adjust to closed building entrances, fenced off areas near the construction where the contractors store their materials, and the noise of construction. The end result will be additional spaces for offices, activities, and growth of the University. So, Pardon our Dust, we are growing again!
Student Success Center
Construction of the Student Success Center is scheduled to start next spring or early summer; however, the building location is on top of several major underground utility runs. An early project to relocate those utility lines will start after the Thanksgiving Holiday. The area south of the University Center will be closed for construction, though a temporary sidewalk from the east will provide access to the Food Court through the south entrance doors near Chik-Fil-A. The work should be completed in February, but the timing is totally dependent upon winter weather. Utility switch-overs will occur during Spring Break Week with final completion in early April.
Early Childhood Center Expansion
A new addition to the north end of the Early Childhood Center will almost double the size of the facility. Several new classrooms will be added along with adjacent outdoor play areas. The existing facility will be remodeled to provide proper offices, kitchen service facilities, and work rooms. Construction will begin shortly after May, 2008 graduation. The Center will keep parents informed of their temporary accommodations during the construction period.
Student Fitness Center Expansion
Another project in the Vadalabene Center is the expansion of the Student Fitness Center. The Center will expand to the west from the current recreational basketball courts. This expansion will take in a portion of the parking lot and will feature two additional basketball courts including a bleacher area, restrooms, a second floor work out area, and expansion of the office wing. Construction on this project is also to start after May, 2008 graduation.
