CAMPUS CLEAN-UP
NOVEMBER 12-16, 2007
The annual Campus Clean-Up will be conducted November 12-16, 2006. On the day designated for each building, FM Grounds crews will pick up surplus furniture and equipment, trash, and whatever else is cluttering up space. Following is the schedule for buildings:
- · Monday, November 12, 2007: SIUE SDM Alton Campus
- · Tuesday, November 13, 2007: Founders, Alumni & Dunham Halls, Lovejoy Library
- · Wednesday, November 14, 2007: Rendleman & Peck Halls, Art & Design Building, Engineering Building,
- · Thursday, November 15, 2007: Science Building, Early Childhood Center, SS Building, ERTC, Vadalabene Center
- · Friday, November 16, 2006: Hallway Shopping Relocating Day
-
-
- Campus Clean-Up is a free service of FM provided to state-funded departments providing a few simple guidelines are followed:
-
-
- 1. Surplus furniture and equipment must be tagged with “Surplus Property Pick Up” form (http://www.siu.edu/%7Eais/eforms/eville/index.htm#FXDASSTS) or it cannot be picked up. Where possible, paperwork should be securely attached to the INSIDE with a copy attached to the OUTSIDE as well (previously, paperwork has been torn or lost). Departments are reminded to keep a copy of the paperwork for their records. Regular Surplus Property Pick Up Paperwork submitted within 2 weeks of Campus Clean Up will be reserved for Campus Clean Up. NO PAPER=NO PICK UP.
2. Material must be ready on the assigned day; it cannot be picked up any other day. Trash must be bagged or boxed and marked as trash. No furniture needing carpenters to disassemble will be moved on Campus Clean Up.
3. FM recommends that easily moved equipment, furniture, or trash tagged with paperwork be placed in the hallways after noon of the preceding day. For other items, a sign should be posted on the door of the office to notify Grounds of needed pick up. Grounds Workers begin work at 7 AM. Some departments have items in their hallways; please mark all items that are to REMAIN in the hallway.
4. “Hallway Shoppers” (where items are being relocated to another department) MUST complete and submit a “Request for Change of Status” form (http://www.siu.edu/%7Eais/eforms/eville/index.htm#FXDASSTS) to Property Control for all inventory items to be transferred from one account to another. An e-mail requesting items be moved from the hallway to a different department should be sent to fmserv@siue.edu. Items will be moved to their new location by Grounds. Items left in the hallways without corresponding e-mail requests will be returned to Surplus.
NOTE: CAMPUS CLEAN-UP DOES NOT INCLUDE PICK UP OF ELECTRONICS (COMPUTERS, PRINTERS, COPIERS, ETC.) to avoid inventory difficulties. Departments are encouraged to call Surplus Property at 3378 for computer/electronics pickups at other times of year. Additionally, hazardous materials are not picked up; departments are advised to contact Environmental Health & Safety at 3584 for instructions on proper disposal. Campus Clean Up should be a time reserved for wholesale pick up of trash.
Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the summer are well aware of the changes in trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and recycling is now picked up every other week; one week trash, the other recycling. The Fall 2007 pick-up schedule is:
Office recycling: November 12 and 26; and December 10
Office trash: November 5 and 19; and December 3 and 17
Call Steve Brandenburg for assistance at ext. 2067.

HOW DOES MY DEPARTMENT GET ON THAT LIST?
From time to time, FM receives money from the state to replace carpet; however, since FM never knows when they will have the money, a list of carpets needing replacement is kept. Many building occupants would like to replace their carpet, but have no idea what the criteria is to add their department’s name on the list. Building Service Supervisors rate the carpet on a 1 to 4 scale. The priority system includes both the condition of the carpet and the visibility of the area. The condition refers to wear and soiling, not the color or design. (As most readers can attest, ugly out-of-date carpet wears like iron!)
CARPETING CLASSIFICATIONS
Category IWorn out, with some places worn through to backing.
Category II--- Work, heavy wear, significant non-removable stains; looks shabby.
Category III--- Minor wear in traffic areas and under chairs; good condition overall.
Category IV--- No significant wear or stains.
LOCALE CLASSIFICATIONS
Public---Main hallways, lecture halls, auditoriums seating over 100; i.e. bridge between Founders and Alumni Halls, Science Auditoriums
Front Door---Public areas with heavy public and student traffic and/or high visibility; i.e., Bursar’s and Registrar’s public areas.
Classrooms---Remaining classrooms; within this classification, rooms centrally scheduled will have priority.
Public Offices---Public office areas of office suites. In general, this will be the reception area, conference rooms, main hallways, and the office of a VC, Dean or Director.
Facilities Management usually provides samples for the department to choose from.

Project Updates
Edwardsville: |
|
A number of construction projects are planned for next spring following graduation in May. Students, faculty and staff will need to adjust to closed building entrances, fenced off areas near the construction where the contractors store their materials, and the noise of construction. The end result will be additional spaces for offices, activities, and growth of the University. So, Pardon our Dust, we are growing again!
Student Success Center
Construction of the Student Success Center is scheduled to start next spring or early summer; however, the building location is on top of several major underground utility runs. An early project to relocate those utility lines will start after the Thanksgiving Holiday. The area south of the University Center will be closed for construction, though a temporary sidewalk from the east will provide access to the Food Court through the south entrance doors near Chik-Fil-A. The work should be completed in February, but the timing is totally dependent upon winter weather. Utility switch-overs will occur during Spring Break Week with final completion in early April.
Early Childhood Center Expansion
A new addition to the north end of the Early Childhood Center will almost double the size of the facility. Several new classrooms will be added along with adjacent outdoor play areas. The existing facility will be remodeled to provide proper offices, kitchen service facilities, and work rooms. Construction will begin shortly after May, 2008 graduation. The Center will keep parents informed of their temporary accommodations during the construction period.
Student Fitness Center Expansion
Another project in the Vadalabene Center is the expansion of the Student Fitness Center. The Center will expand to the west from the current recreational basketball courts. This expansion will take in a portion of the parking lot and will feature two additional basketball courts including a bleacher area, restrooms, a second floor work out area, and expansion of the office wing. Construction on this project is also to start after May, 2008 graduation.

Landscaping Upgrades:
A contract has been awarded to add stone landscaping
retaining walls on the hillside adjacent to the Wishing
Well. A pair of parallel walls will extend north from
the Wishing Well and end near the steps to the Clinic.
A separate single wall will extend south of the Wishing Well
and terminate near the sidewalk. This initial phase of
the project will erect the walls and a landscaping plan will
be developed to anchor the hillside with plantings.
The new lower level will be leveled with decorative gravel
base, and “stepping stone” pads installed for tables and
chairs with some walking pads connecting them. This
area is shady during the summer mid-day and will provide a
pleasant outside space for students, faculty, and staff.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Facilities Management has been sending, revising and changing our publication, The ClipBoard, since its inception in 1996, and would like to hear from the ClipBoard’s readers. What would make the ClipBoard better and more interesting? What could FM present that they are not covering? What would make the information more helpful? Send your suggestions and comments to fmserv@siue.edu; FM will appreciate hearing from you!
GETTIN’ BETTER ALL THE TIME…
Four of FM’s Building Engineers, Greg Shewmake, Hugh Burris, Dennis Henderson and Chris Stajduhar, have completed qualification training put on by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and been awarded Certified Building Operator Level 1. This certificate is awarded to individuals who demonstrate knowledge and skill in energy efficient operations and maintenance of buildings and equipment. Building Operator Certification (BOC) is recognized as a standard of professional competence in twenty states across the country.
WHAT A BRIGHT IDEA!
Facilities Management has received a grant award check for $64,000 for completing energy efficient lighting upgrades throughout campus. The check was for work performed by FM electricians last summer to relamp the core campus with lower wattage T-8 lamps and replace dozens of light fixtures with more efficient ones. A second grant involved replacement of the lamps in the traffic lights which were replaced with LED bulbs. These bulbs use much less energy and are expected to last ten times longer than the old ones. |
