Reminder!

ILLINOIS SMOKE-OUT!
By Illinois law, beginning January 1, 2008, smoking will be prohibited in a
public place or place of employment or within 15 feet of an entrance to a
public place or place of employment, unless exempted by the act.  No person
may smoke in any vehicle owned, leased or operated by the state or a
political subdivision of the state.

Also required by law, each public place and place of employment where
smoking is prohibited must have posted at every entrance a conspicuous sign
clearly stating that smoking is prohibited.  All ashtrays must be removed
from areas where smoking is prohibited.

In the days before the new law takes effect, the signs will be posted on
University doors and ash urns moved to the appropriate places.

Readers who smoke are asked to remember this is a state law and not a
University one.  There is nothing FM can do except what is required by
state law.  A very good summary of the new Illinois no smoking law can be
found
at:

The Illinois Department of Public Health, local public health departments
and local law enforcement agencies are required to enforce the act.  These
agencies may assess fines for violations.  The Illinois Department of
Public Health will establish a telephone number by January 1, 2008, for
persons to call and register a complaint.

Trash / Recycling Schedule
Building occupants who were on campus over the summer are well aware of the
changes in trash/recycling pick up. Office trash and recycling is now
picked up every other week; one week trash, the other recycling.
Call Steve Brandenburg for assistance at ext. 2067.

The Gift that will keep on giving…
Building occupants are reminded to be certain all food trash is discarded
before leaving for Christmas break.  The banana left in a trash can in
December will be especially unpleasant by January, and everyone in the
office, perhaps everyone on the floor, will notice!
Just in Case…
Employees who need to be on campus during Christmas break should be aware
of the following:

In case of a police emergency…………………………………………Dial 911
When in need of campus police assistance……………………………Dial 3324
When reporting building problems……………Dial 3513 and follow instructions

Think Green…
Temperatures in campus buildings are kept at the bare minimum during
Christmas break while buildings are unoccupied.  Most plants do fairly well
in cooler temperatures; however, building occupants whose plants are
especially sensitive to cold may consider taking the plants home over
Christmas break.
Locked out??
New ID cards are required for Keyless Access use after January 2,
2008.  Staff, faculty and students are reminded to obtain a new University
ID/Cougar Card before January 2, 2008.  Re-carding is currently under way
in the Service Center in Rendleman Hall.
Snow Route Signs
Main building entrances, especially the accessible entrances, in addition
to being the first to be cleared, also get more frequent follow up
cleaning. They are generally the flattest entries to the buildings, and
traffic helps keep them clear. "Snow Route" signs designate entrances that
will receive first and most frequent attention in case of snow and have
been posted as listed below. Handicapped entrances are denoted by (H).
Rendleman Hall/Southeast entrance (entrance by Lot C at MUC end)
North entrance (H) (entrance facing hairpin)
Morris University Center/North entrance (H) (entrance facing Lovejoy Library)

Vacation E-Mail Addresses

The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email to
Facilities Management, especially during months when individuals may be on
vacation.  If an email is for a specific individual, and it doesn’t matter
how soon it is answered, individual email addresses are fine.  However,
when the email has to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a
timely manner, the following email addresses should be used:

Hot or cold calls/Customer Service: E-mail
(<mailto:fmserv@siue.edu>fmserv@siue.edu) or call 3711
Work Order Control:  E-mail (<mailto:fmserv@siue.edu>fmserv@siue.edu) or
call 3711

Project Updates

Edwardsville:

A number of construction projects are planned for next spring following
graduation in May.  Students, faculty and staff will need to adjust to
closed building entrances, fenced off areas near the construction where the
contractors store their materials, and the noise of construction.  The
coordination of bid packages between all of the new projects is critical to
enable contractors to properly prepare bids.  There are at least five major
construction projects planned for spring starts.  Facilities and Purchasing
are working closely to properly schedule the bidding dates.  The end result
will be additional spaces for offices, activities, and growth of the
University.  So, Pardon our Dust, we are growing again!

Student Success Center

Update December, 2007:  Preliminary work to prepare the site for the
utility relocation project is underway.  A temporary entry road has been
constructed from the service road entry way to serve the site.  Soon, the
fence to enclose the site will be erected and students will have to alter
some of their routes between the Residence Halls and the University
Center.  The south entrance to the Food court adjacent to Chik-Fil-A will
remain open, but the other south entrance near Cougar Den and Freshens will
be closed.  The contractor will complete work in February if the weather
cooperates.  Switch over of systems will occur over Spring Break.  The
design of the building is nearly finalized and the architects and engineers
are working on the bid documents.  Bidding is scheduled for spring.

Early Childhood Center Expansion

Update December, 2007:  The architects have developed the plans into their
final arrangement and are developing the exterior design of the
building.  The project is on schedule for design and is expected to go out
for bids in the spring.

Student Fitness Center Expansion

Update December, 2007:  The design of the interior space has been
resolved.  The building addition is expanding to the west into the parking
lot, so some parking spaces will be eliminated.  Two proposed ideas have
been developed and the best one will be incorporated into the final design;
one eliminates more spaces and has a gradual slope up to the entry, whereas
the other design reduces the number of lost spaces, but adds steps to the
entry.  The architects are also studying options to keep the project in
budget; no ideas to report yet on that issue.

Vadalabene Gymnasium
Update December, 2007:  Bleachers in the Vadalabene Center Gym are past
their expected life and require constant maintenance.  One concern is that
moving the bleachers in or out for some occasion will result in a failure
and the bleachers will remain in that location until they are demolished
next spring.  Following graduation in May, 2008, the Gym will be closed and
the bleachers removed.  A new wood floor will be installed and 12,000
square feet of new space will be created under the bleachers.  The space
will include a new restroom for women with about three times the number of
fixtures currently available, a visitor’s locker room, a room for
officials, storage, two classrooms and offices for Athletics.  The area
over the new rooms will be a mezzanine level for badminton and other
Kinesiology classes.  In addition, the new mezzanine level will align with
the existing second floor allowing better access to the existing restroom
facilities and to the main building entrances.  Unfortunately, the
construction schedule does not permit graduation ceremonies to be held in
the Gym in August, as the work has to be completed in time for the Fall
Semester to allow for scheduling of Kinesiology classes.

Science Building

Update December, 2007:  The new “wing” of the Science Building has floor
plans well developed.  The “wing” is actually planned as a separate
building to the west of the existing Science Building, visually filling the
opening between the Science Building and Dunham Hall.  The new building
will be three stories with a connecting bridge to the first level of the
existing building.  Basically, the new floors will align with the three
lowest floors of the existing Science Building as the new building is about
15 feet lower than the existing.  Direct alignment with existing floors was
impossible since the floor to floor distance on the new building is several
feet more than the existing.  Meetings were held this week to discuss the
LEED’s program as the building will apply for a Silver rating and a Gold
rating is being investigated
