WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Ways to deal with Insanity” just before the Service Numbers

"A couple years ago they told me I was too young to be president and you were too old to be playing baseball. But we fooled them."
President John F. Kennedy to Stan Musial at the 1962 All Star Game

WHAT’S NEW?

RAMP CLOSINGS
As the retaining wall at the south end of Founders Hall is rebuilt, the ramp will be closed beginning Monday, September 25, 2006. It will remain closed until work is complete, probably through Thursday, September 28, 2006. Once the work at Founders Hall is complete, the rebuilding of the retaining wall at the north end of Alumni Hall will begin. The scheduling of work at Alumni Hall will be shared with the University community when it is known.

FM FORUM
Once again, FM is receiving a spate of calls about bagged toilets in restrooms. FM relies on Building Service Workers, Building Engineers, and number of other people to report these problems, but it is impossible for these folks to be everywhere all the time. Please, please report bagged or problem toilets as soon as possible; better to report a problem three or four times than (as most of you know) to let it go until it smells bad. FM greatly appreciates the assistance of building occupants.

THEY ALSO SERVE…
Divers from American Underwater Construction completed their work in Cougar Lake on Saturday, September 9, 2006, and were given all the credit in the ClipBoard for working 15-25 feet underwater to recover the screen and frame. However, as Ed Matecki, Assistant Director for Utilities, mentioned, it was SIUE Engineers Dennis Tate and John Lopez who worked on the shore to help with maneuvering and modifying the screens and assisting the divers. Good job, Dennis and John!

ENGINEERING BUILDING
On a clear day, you can see forever, that is, unless you are looking through some of the windows in the Engineering Building. A number of windows have developed a foggy appearance and since they are still under warranty, the glass panel manufacturer is responsible for providing new ones. However, everyone involved is concerned about the reason the panels are failing. A meeting was held with the glass panel manufacturer, the curtain wall system supplier, the installer, the architect, and a curtain wall specialist consultant. It was determined that testing of the panels and the installation was needed to find the reason for the problem. Currently, the tests are scheduled for September 27, 2006; if the test has to be rescheduled, information will be sent to the faculty and staff at the Engineering Building. Tests will include water tests on the panels in place and removal of four of the glass panels for further testing. Replacement glass will be installed as each of the four panels is removed.

IN THE WORKS

ADA PROJECT
Update September 24, 2006: CDB reviewers have completed their reviews and the comments have been sent to the Architect/Engineer. Minor corrections remain; however, one CDB reviewer has still rejected the submission. The CDB project manager is trying to resolve the problem and a meeting will be held with the A/E and CDB within the next few weeks to discuss the final corrections.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update September 24, 2006: There is nothing worse than starting an update with bad news. FM has been waiting for delivery of the newly manufactured brick and on the day the brick was to be delivered, the manufacturer called. They actually made the brick the wrong size! Standard size brick can be one of two lengths: 7-5/8” or 8”. The 3/8” difference doesn’t seem like very much, but to insert a shorter brick into a wall of longer brick, the joints have to be widened and the end result would not look right. Thus, the brick had to be rejected. The manufacturer is studying the production schedule and they anticipate delivery of the correct brick around October 10, 2006. Even after this bad news, there was some good: the brick on Founders and Alumni Halls is the 7-5/8” size, so repair of the retaining wall will proceed. The accessible ramp on Founders Hall will be closed during the repairs, but should be opened by Thursday or Friday, September 28th or 29th. Work on the retaining wall at Alumni Hall will begin when that work is complete.th.  The masons can continue their prep work, but may have to leave for a few days.  Their storage trailer in the accessible parking lot just west of Dunham Hall will be removed within the week.  They are making an effort to unload it and will bring one of their trailers on site.  The current storage container is a rental unit, and the agency that owns it has to come and pick it up with a roll-back truck.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update September 24, 2006: Update September 24, 2006: The work on the Metalsmithing area is progressing. A new door frame with double doors was added, and to the credit of FM crafts, it is impossible to tell where the original wall starts and stops; it blends in beautifully. Electricians have begun placing the wiremold, the horizontal strip on the wall that holds electrical outlets. Contractors for the sheet metal work are preparing bids for review. Progress is slowly moving ahead.

The atrium in the Art & Design Building will have the old planter area filled in with a platform that will be used for display. Also planned is a storage area under the open stairway.

Work has resumed in Building 8272, SIUE SDM Alton, as two accessible bathrooms are created for the facility. Other building modifications include widening of several doorways, removal of some room dividers, installation of new flooring, and relocation of some X-ray equipment. A meeting was held with the Architects and Engineers to discuss plans to expand the sterilization area within the Clinic. In order to begin construction before Christmas, the design will move at a fast pace. Even though some work is not scheduled until the three week close down next July, much preparation has to take place first. The required work would prevent the clinic from serving clients, so it is scheduled when patients are not usually using the facility.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update September 24, 2006:Good news for ESLHEC: the bids received for the emergency window replacement project were very good. CDB will be issuing a contract to the low bidder and hopefully, work can be completed before winter begins. Once a schedule is received, it will be shared.

WAYS TO DEAL WITH INSANITY

  1. At lunchtime, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at   passing cars to see if they slow down.
  2. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.
  3. Put your garbage can on your desk and label it “In.”
  4. Put decaf in the coffee maker for three weeks.  Once everyone is over their caffeine addictions, switch to Espresso.
  5. In the memo field of all your checks, write “for smuggling diamonds.”
  6. Put mosquito netting around your work area and play tropical sounds all day.
  7. Five days in advance, tell your friends you can’t attend their party because you’re not in the mood.
  8. When the money comes out the ATM, scream, “I won! I won!”
  9. When leaving the zoo, start running towards the parking lot, yelling, “Run for your lives!  They’re loose!”
  10. Tell your children over dinner, “Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go.”
