WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“That Thing Called Love” just before the Service Numbers

“I want to have children, but my friends scare me. One of my friends told me she was in labor for 36 hours. I don't even want to do anything that feels GOOD for 36 hours.”
Rita Rudner

WHAT’S NEW?

WELCOME, LOGAN
Facilities Management’s Grounds Supervisor Kenny Potter and his wife Shanna welcomed a new baby boy to their family on September 22, 2006.  Logan Allen weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces and was 21” long.  He joins his big sister, Ashlyn, 2, at home.  Mom and baby are doing fine.  Congratulations, Kenny and Shanna!

RAMP CLOSINGS
Work on the retaining wall at Founders Hall is complete and the rebuilding of the retaining wall at the north end of Alumni Hall has begun and should be finished by mid-week (Wednesday, October 4, 2006).

CONSTRUCTION WORK AREAS
A constant flow of work is going on around campus; most of the time students, staff and faculty are present.  Contractors frequently use yellow tape to block work areas; Facilities workmen use red tape.  Recently, the Mason contractor working on repairs blocked several areas as he was saw cutting mortar and brick out of the building walls.  Yet, students ignored the yellow warning tape, simply lifted it up and walked right past the construction work!  Of course, everyone recognizes the danger of this activity and to that end, FM requests first, that faculty and staff remember to set the example by going around the work zone (yes, inconvenient, but less so than a visit to an Emergency Room).  Secondly, please encourage students to avoid the work areas.  It is difficult to understand what students are thinking when they walk through these zones; sometimes, they just need reminded.  Every student is invaluable to SIUE; FM appreciates the assistance.

IN THE WORKS

ENGINEERING BUILDING
Update October 1, 2006: After some shuffling and re-planning, a schedule has been set for the glass testing.  Starting October 11, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., a testing company will be on site to field test the glass panels.  Four glass panels will be selected for testing.  First, the trim will be removed and a sight inspection will be made for any obvious problems.  Second, an initial water test will be run in place on the windows.  Then the window unit will be removed and a second water test will be run on the panel.  The second test will be immersing the panel in a pool of water.  The panels will then be sent to other facilities for additional testing.  The campus community is welcome to observe the tests, but since the work areas will be blocked for protection of the observers, it is asked that the tests be viewed from inside.

ADA PROJECT
Update October 1, 2006: CDB has requested that the architect respond in writing to the CDB comments sent on the fourth 100% review.  They have asked for that response by October 3, 2006.  Once those comments are received, it can be determined if monies are available and bids can be requested.  If money is not available, which is likely during this election period, the project will be put on hold until the monies are released.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update October 1, 2006:  The mason contractor is finishing the retaining wall on the south end of Founders Hall and is starting on the retaining wall on the north end of Alumni Hall.  In addition, portions of the walls on both buildings are being cut out and replaced.  The brick manufacturer has scheduled delivery of the new run of bricks during the week of October 9th, an ideal time since it will allow the mason contractor to finish work before cold weather sets in.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update October 1, 2006: Several miscellaneous projects continue.  In the metalsmithing graduate work room, electrical upgrades are being added and walls are being painted.  Lighting will be improved by restoring the use of two lamps in each fixture disabled for energy savings.

Plumbers are installing under floor plumbing connections and extending water lines for the new accessible restrooms in Building 8272 in SIUE SDM Alton.  Design sessions to upgrade the sterilization services in the Dental Clinic are ongoing, with some work scheduled for the Christmas break.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update October 1, 2006: While FM waits for CDB to issue the contract and the notice to proceed to the successful contractor on the emergency window replacement project, other design work is progressing on the exterior enhancements.  Replacement of all the windows in Buildings A and B is nearly 100% complete, work that also includes tuckpointing, enclosure of the vestibules in the Classroom Building, and some roof replacement.  Another small project will correct the grill hood exhaust system, replace the ceiling tile and repaint the ceiling grid in the cafeteria.  Steady progress is being made to keep the campus looking fresh.

THAT THING CALLED LOVE

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds; “What does love mean?”  The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore.  So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too.  That’s love.”  Rebecca-age 8

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.  You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.”  Billy-age 4

“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is ok.”  Danny-age 7

“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.”  Bobby-age 7 (Wow!)

“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.”  Nikka-age 6 (We need a few million more Nikka’s on this planet.)

“During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared.  I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.  He was the only one doing that.  I wasn’t scared anymore.”  Cindy-age 8

“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.”  Elaine-age 5

“Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.”  Mary Ann-age 4

“I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.”  Lauren-age 4

“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.”  (What an image!)  Karen-age7

“You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it.  But if you mean it, you should say it a lot.  People forget.”  Jessica-age 8
