WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

GO CARDINALS!        GO RAMS!

WHAT’S NEW?

BETTER NOW THAN LATER…
Plumbers are installing new pumps for the fan coil units and one new hot water pump in the Science Building. These pumps are used to supply hot or chilled water to the various fan coils in the Science Building. The existing units were beyond their useful life. The replacement will make the heating system more reliable this winter. Work is to be complete by the end of October. New radiation system pumps are being installed in Dunham Hall to make that system more reliable as well.

IN MEMORY
Flags flew at half-staff on campus on Friday, October 13, 2006, to honor Army Spc. Kristofer C. Walker, United States Army, 20 years old, from Creve Coeur, IL, killed October 2, 2006, in the war in Iraq.

NEW PATIO ON CAMPUS
Just east of the Engineering Building, the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has built a brick patio. The students mixed and poured concrete for the connecting sidewalks and laid brick pavers in a cross shaped patio area. Some of the bricks are engraved, and additional engraved bricks may be purchased for $50. The patio looks very attractive and is a nice addition to campus.

BIG BLUES AVAILABLE
As reported in an earlier ClipBoard, Steve Brandenburg, Assistant Director for Building Services, has a surplus of large blue recycling cans; contact him at 2069.

IN THE WORKS

ENGINEERING BUILDING
Update October 15, 2006: Field tests were held in an attempt to understand why the windows were fogged. Two glass panels were removed and replaced on the south side of the building. The glass panels were inspected, particularly around the perimeter, but no apparent weaknesses were visible. A simple wood frame was built and clear plastic was laid in the frame to create a pool of water about 6 inches deep. One glass panel set in the water floated, which proved the Archimedes was still correct. Each panel is 5’ X 10’ and 1-1/2” thick, with a heat mirror screen stretched in the center of two ¼” glass panels, and filled with dead air. Although this unit weighs close to 400 pounds, the dead air caused the unit to float. Thus, two men step on the panel to push it under water, and also, to cause the glass to bow and push air out any passages in the perimeter seal. The perimeter of the panel was intently studied to see any air bubbles which would clearly show a failure of the perimeter seal. Not a bubble popped out! The obvious wasn’t obvious. Both glass panels were water tested with identical results. Next, the two panels will be sent to a testing laboratory for further investigation of the cause of the fog.

ADA PROJECT
Update October 15, 2006: The fifth (and hopefully final) submission to CDB has been made by the Architects. This time, they submitted only the drawings and specifications that needed correction per the CDB review. After the final review comments are submitted, the documents will incorporate those comments, and be ready to issue for bidding. However, the project is still dependent upon CDB for release of the monies. Hopefully, the project can soon move on to bidding and eventually, construction.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update October 15, 2006: The correct brick has finally been delivered. The masons have been installing the new brick at Dunham Hall. They will work about a week on Dunham Hall before moving to Rendleman where a retaining wall at the west entry will be rebuilt and the end of a retaining wall on the north side will be refinished. However, there is always a possibility that the work crew may choose to move to Peck Hall or Lovejoy Library first. Most of the time, work areas are blocked with yellow tape; however, when they work on walls away from the walkways, they generally do not tape off the work area. Just be aware (and remind students, please) that work has resumed and a crew of five or so are busy restoring the brick walls.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update October 15, 2006: Work continues on the Metalsmithing graduate area in the Art & Design School. Painting is complete and additional lighting has been provided in the studio. Bids for sheet metal work are being collected and an award will be made to the low bidder.

Some additional modifications are planned for the Graduate Painting & Textile Studios. An adjustment of the rail carrying the electrical circuitry at the rear of each individual studio will open up additional space in that cubicle. The painting studios will have a flush panel installed to allow large paintings to be set and worked. A wall insertion to reduce the light through the glass block wall is under study.

At SIUE SDM Alton, work in Building 8272 is also moving forward. Equipment is being relocated, walls are being refinished, existing doorways are being widened and the two accessible restrooms are being finished. An outside contractor will begin working October 24th and work at night to permit Facilities workers to work during the day.

Demolition of the entry stairs to the SIUE SDM Alton Science Building (8279) is scheduled to start the week of October 16, 2006. Facilities will remove the existing stone and concrete and prepare a new concrete sub-surface to support stone steps and stone landing. The selected stone will be chosen to match this historical building. An outside contractor experienced in stone work (particularly in historical stone work) will install the stone.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update October 15, 2006: The contract for the emergency window replacement has been issued, and the contractor is preparing shop drawings on the window units to submit to the architect. Once the contractor has a better idea of the window delivery time, a construction kick-off meeting will be scheduled.

SPORTS HUMOR

UNFAIR ADVANTAGE

One day (insert name of opposing quarterback, example: Matt Hasselbeck) died and went to Heaven. When he got there, God showed him to his new mansion, which had (insert name of opposing team, example: Seahawks) stuff hanging everywhere. Then (opposing quarterback, Matt) looked out his new window and saw an even bigger mansion on the top of the hill. That mansion had Rams stuff hanging all over it, so (opposing quarterback, Matt) assumed it must belong to Marc Bulger. So (opposing quarterback, Matt) asked God, “Why is Marc Bulger’s house bigger than mine is?”
“That’s not Marc Bulger’s house,” God answered, “It’s Mine.”

A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND…

A teacher asks her students if they're Mets fans. All of the hands go up except for one student.
"Okay, Bobby. What team are you a fan of?"
"The Cardinals."
"Why's that?"
"Well, my parents are both Cardinals fans, so I'm a Cardinal fan too."
"That's not a good answer, Bobby. If your parents were both morons, would you be a moron too?"

"No, that would make me a Mets fan!"
