WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.”

WHAT’S NEW?

WINNING PROJECT
The St. Louis Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently awarded first place for outstanding achievement in the application of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technology to the upgrade of the campus chilled water system.

The system that cools the campus core buildings runs large chillers at night and stores the cold water in a 3 million gallon tank for use during the day.  In general, electricity is cheaper at night and the system has not only saved the University considerable energy dollars, it has also greatly improved system reliability and capacity.

The system was proposed by Facilities Management and designed by BRiC Partnership.  It was paid for with campus deferred maintenance funds.

AND WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT…
Campus Clean-Up was held the week of October 30-November 3, 2006, and was the most efficient, well-coordinated Clean-Up in recent memory. Many thanks to the departments for their cooperation and support!

TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVE
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Monday, October 30, 2006, to honor Marine Pvt. Edwardo J. Lopez, United States Marine Corp., 21, of Aurora, Illinois, killed in the war in Iraq on October 19, 2006.

Campus flags flew at half-staff again on Thursday, November 2, 2006, on behalf of Marine Sgt. Thomas M. Gilbert, United States Marine Corp., 24, of Downers Grove, Illinois, dead in the war in Iraq on October 25, 2006.

IN THE WORKS

ENGINEERING BUILDING
Update November 5th, 2006: Arrangements are being made to perform a frost test where dry ice is placed against the glass to check for moisture within the air space of the window unit. If moisture is present inside the air space, it will freeze at the dry ice location and answer the question if internal moisture is the cause of the fogging. If nothing freezes, then something else is causing the problem. Likewise, knowing moisture is present still leaves the question of how moisture penetrated inside the glass air space. Another test to be run is a spray water test around the perimeter of a window unit. Two window units will be tested with high pressure water spray to determine if water is setting under the glass panel or draining away as designed. Setting water can cause the silicone seal around the glass perimeter to deteriorate. Although no evidence of silicone deterioration had been seen, tests are needed to eliminate each possibility and determine the cause of the problem.

ADA PROJECT
Update November 5th, 2006: Some projects seem to take an inordinate amount of time to move through the design and document process and this one has been a long, drawn-out experience.  One final question was answered this week, so the architects and engineers can make the final corrections on the drawings and specifications and send them to CDB.  Now, all that is needed is for CDB to release the funds for this project, a request being made now in hopes of a quick answer.  However, should a quick answer be received, it would be the first quick answer in this seemingly endless project.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update November 5th, 2006: This week’s cold weather delayed progress on completion of the masonry work.  The forecast for next week is promising, with temperatures predicted to be well above freezing at night and possibly warm enough for the contractors to start work first thing in the mornings.  Some work remains on Dunham Hall; the majority of work on the other buildings has been completed.  The contractor spent a full day recently cleaning up around his work areas.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update November 5th, 2006: Bids have been received on the metal duct work, hood and exhaust system for the graduate Metalsmithing work space in the Art & Design Building.  Costs are being reviewed.  Meanwhile, electrical work has been completed as far as possible in anticipation of the sheet metal installation.

Entry stairs at the Science Building at the SIUE SDM Alton Campus were removed and the large hole underneath filled with sand which was compacted.  The concrete sub-base should be poured by the time of this publication.  A stone paver has been selected to match the color of the original stone with treads similar in color.  Once finished, the landings and stairs, in addition to matching the historical Science Building, will drain properly.

BUMPER STICKER WISDOM
Two wrongs don't make a right, but two Wrights made an airplane.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end.
The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere.
Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun.
The only time the world beats a path to your door is if you're in the bathroom.
If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would have put them on my knees.
Never knock on Death's door; ring the doorbell and run (he hates that).
Lead me not into temptation (I can find the way myself).
When you're finally holding all the cards, why does everyone else decide to play chess?
