WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“Steven Wright One-Liners ” just before the Service Numbers
A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else. John Burroughs

WHAT’S NEW?

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The campus wide test of the “all clear” system found a few problems that are being corrected.  The volume has been increased to all of the speakers.  An attention getting opening to the message is being sought; however, the use of the opening line of Arthur Brown’s “Fire” has been rejected.  Work continues with the vendor on a minor software issue.

One apparent misconception was uncovered in the testing.  The system is installed in the shelter area of each building and is intended only for those who have taken shelter.  Building occupants who choose to remain in a third floor office when the storm watch siren sounds will not be able to hear the “all clear” or other status announcements.

Director, Facilities Management

SEXUAL HARASSMENT TRAINING
Grounds Workers and Building Service Workers recently completed Sexual Harassment Training.  The training was conducted by Paul Pitts, Office of Institutional Compliance, and Shrylene Clark Langston, Human Resources.

The training, an overview of the Sexual Harassment Policy of SIUE, was designed to prevent occurrences of sexual harassment, increase awareness, show how to identify behavior associated with sexual harassment and how to respond to allegations of sexual harassment.

TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVE
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Friday, November 10, 2006, to honor Army Sgt. Kraig D. Foyteck, United States Army, 26, from Skokie, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on October 30, 2006.

IN THE WORKS

ENGINEERING BUILDING
Update November 12th, 2006: A report was submitted that indicated that the glazing failure was caused by the location of the setting blocks. The report is being reviewed by all involved in the question, but there is some doubt that the right answer has been found. The additional tests have been suspended until the report is analyzed and a conclusion is reached.

ADA PROJECT
Update November 12th, 2006: Unbelievable news!! CDB has released the monies for this project! No sooner was a comment made about their slowness than they released the monies, and it is great to see this job moving forward. Just a word of caution; monies have been stopped in the past even after a contract was signed and preliminary work was underway. However, the pre-bid walk-through has been scheduled for December 4, 2006, and a number of contractors will be on campus that day.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update November 12th, 2006: If the ADA Project seems to have run long, consider that this masonry project has extended almost a year longer than originally anticipated. But, Good News, the contractor is completing the final repair (west wall of Dunham Hall) and, after cleaning the brick repair areas and the remainder of his work site, he will be finished. The Architects are reviewing the Punch List, checking the new work, and verifying that Punch List items from previous reviews have been corrected. In another week, the contractor should be completely finished and off campus.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update November 12th, 2006: The concrete landings and steps have been poured at the Science Building at the SIUE SDM Alton Campus in preparation for the mason to lay the stone pavers and treads. The mason has the material on order and hopefully, will begin work in a couple of weeks.

Another of the summer projects is drawing to a close.  A concrete work area was installed over the summer on the south side of the Art & Design Building.  Some remaining funds allowed for a wall along the west end and a short return along the south edge of the concrete pad.  Concrete masonry units (CMU) were initially installed as delivery of the brick was anticipated around the first of September.  As reported in the Masonry Project updates, the brick manufacturer had a variety of difficulties making the brick and it wasn’t delivered until mid-October.  Since the mason for the Art & Design wall is also installing the masonry at Evergreen Hall, it was a challenge for the contractor to provide the men required to lay the brick at Art & Design.  A manufactured stone cap will be installed soon to finish the wall.

STEVEN WRIGHT ONE-LINERS

  1.  Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went nuts.
  2. Just think how much deeper the ocean would be if sponges didn't live there.
  3. If a cow laughed, would milk come out her nose?
  4. Whatever happened to preparations A through G?
  5. If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from?
  6. I went for a walk last night and my kids asked me how long I'd be gone. I said, "The whole time."
  7. How come you don't ever hear about gruntled employees? And who has been dis-ing them anyhow?
  8. After eating, do amphibians need to wait an hour before getting OUT of the water?
  9. Why don't they just make mouse-flavored cat food?
  10. If you're sending someone some Styrofoam, what do you pack it in?
