WHAT’S NEW?

WHAT A SWITCH!
To allow AmerenIP to replace 40 year old,high voltage switch gear, Dunham Hall, including the Music Addition, was closed on Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16, 2006. All outside doors were locked, and there was no power at all in the building. Building occupants were advised to stay out of the building until power was restored.

With time to prepare, essential services such as OIT and Telecommunications were maintained with the use of a generator; cooperation between FM electricians and both departments resulted in a relatively smooth transition for Dunham Hall.

BUT (and doesn’t it seem like there’s always a BUT?!) when the power for Alumni Hall was switched over to the second feeder for campus, the 40 year-old auto-switch failed and had to be repaired. Originally, it was thought (and building occupants were told) that repairs would be complete by 12:30, but it turned out to be harder than anticipated to replace a part that old and work was delayed. As a result, Alumni Hall also had to be closed for the better part of Monday, May 15, 2006.

In any situation where danger, unforeseen shutdowns, suspension of work, and/or the closing of buildings are involved, it is unusual when people cooperate fully and nothing happens to make the situation worse. Evidently, this was an unusual situation; from the FM electricians to OIT and Telecomm, to the building occupants of both buildings, the cooperation was outstanding and the people involved cool-headed and understanding. The transition was made smoother for OIT by the cooperation of Duane Schiffman and Garry Sammons, FM Electrical Foreman; when the situation occurred in Alumni Hall, Building Engineers and Building Service Workers cooperated to be certain everyone was notified and out of the building. Janice LaRiviere, FM Assistant Director for Building Maintenance, sends his thanks to his crews for a job well done; FM sends thanks to the University community for their understanding and cooperation.


TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVE
Flags flew at half-staff on campus on Monday, May 15, 2006, on behalf of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day to honor the more than 740,000 Americans who serve as tireless public servants in the federal, state and local police forces. The observance was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy on October 1, 1962.
 

SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The Walk-Through of Art & Design was re-scheduled for Friday, May 19, 2006. Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES.

ROOF RENOVATION
The renovation of Peck Hall roof is scheduled to begin the week of May 21-27, 2006, and should take three to four weeks to complete.

If an email is for a specific individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered, individual email addresses are fine. IN THE WORKS

FOUNDERS HALL PAINTING
Update May 21, 2006: The painting is complete, the School of Business sign is installed and business has returned to normal. The new dark gray color is quite a contrast to the old pinks and oranges, but adds an air of class to the atrium. The fresh paint on the west wall brightens the space as does the paint on the handrails. The building occupants were very cooperative during the painting, and now have a fresh, exciting space as a reward.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update May 21, 2006: The architect on the emergency window replacement project is finalizing his program statement and preliminary cost estimates for FM’s review. The architect handling the several small projects is completing his documents following CDB review comments. It is anticipated that three of the small projects will be bid shortly with the work to be completed this summer.

ADA PROJECT
Update May 21, 2006: The architect has received CDB comments as well as SIUE’s and is correcting his drawings to reflect them. Hopefully, (a hope that remains after three previous submissions) the architects and engineers will completely correct the documents. When the drawings are finally corrected and approved, FM can pursue the release of the monies to get the project under construction.


SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update May 21, 2006: The completed building was accepted on Friday, May 12, 2006. The School of Dental Medicine received their shipment of dental chairs over the weekend and assembly and installation is ongoing. The contractors are finishing a few minor items remaining on the punch list; one item is the grass and site work delayed by all the recent rain. A few nice dry and sunny days should enable the contractor to dress up the grades and replant the seed. Much seed has sprouted so the area is green rather than dirt brown. Facilities will be planting some holly bushes around the wishing well and the chiller unit.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update May 21, 2006: The contractor continues the completion of contract work outside of the brick replacement. Brick has been ordered, but delivery will be the end of June at the earliest. The contractor has painted the lintels at the Art & Design Building and is completing cleaning and sealing precast panels at Alumni and Founders Halls. Now that some dry, warm weather has appeared, the simulated precast panels at the Vadalabene Center can dry and the contractor can apply a sealer coat.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
When the school year ends in May, Facilities shifts into high gear to complete a variety of miscellaneous projects across campus. The Department of Education is renovating several rooms on the first floor of Founders Hall to better serve current programs and space needs. One of the Kinesiology classrooms at the Vadalabene Center is having the carpet removed from the walls (ah, the 70’s and 80’s designs!) and the walls restored to improve the use of the room. As noted above, the Founders Hall atrium was repainted as a MOD, and the carpenters have bulletin boards to install. The graduate painting studio in the Art & Design Building will have the homemade dividers removed and a cubicle furniture system will be installed to help maintain proper egress and safety. A new concrete pad is being poured along the south side of Art & Design to provide a solid working surface for sculpture classes and other large projects. The pad area will have a brick fence installed around a portion of space to help define the work area.
