WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“"Dealing with Life’s Burdens'…” just before the Service Numbers

“Instead of condemning people, try to understand them. Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain--and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.”
(The Hidden Power of Kindness) Lawrence Lovasik

WHAT’S NEW?

REMINDER
To allow AmerenIP to replace 40 year old, high voltage switch gear, DUNHAM HALL, INCLUDING THE MUSIC ADDITION, will be CLOSED on Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16, 2006. The building will beCOMPLETELY closed; all outside doors will be locked. There will be NO power or lights in the building. Please stay out of the building until power is restored Tuesday evening; it is not safe.

It is recommended that computers and other electronic equipment be shut off before the outage.

AmerenIP has saidthat if there are severe storms in the area, their crews might be diverted to emergency duty to restore power in any storm damaged areas. FM will notify the campus as quickly as possible via the listserv should this occur.

IN MEMORY
Flags flew at half-staff on May 10, 2006, in memory of The Honorable Lovana “Lou” Jones, Illinois State Representative for the 26th district and Assistant Majority Leader. Ms. Jones passed away May 8, 2006; she had served in the legislature since 1987.

WHEW! WHAT A WEEK!
The week of May 7-13, 2006, saw FM crafts scurrying to complete tasks reserved for when students are gone. New flush valves were installed in Founders and Alumni Halls; at various times, building occupants had to use restrooms in other buildings as the plumbers worked. In order to tie in to existing water lines for construction of Evergreen Hall, domestic water was shut off to the Art & Design and Engineering Buildings on Thursday, May 11, 2006. Both projects were completed for the betterment of SIUE’s beautiful campus; FM appreciates the patience of the University community.

ADDING TO THE SCHEDULE ALREADY
The schedule for the sweeper recently purchased for SIUE has already been revised; the first sweep through campus is taking a while due to heavy accumulations of sediment and miscellaneous debris. The schedule is: Tuesday-Saturday, Lot B, Lot C, Lot A, Hairpin, and Sunday-Thursday, Central core, Circle Drive, Fans, Oval.

SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The Walk-Through of Art & Design has been re-scheduled for Friday, May 19, 2006, and will begin with a meeting at 1:15 in Room 1117 (Printmaking). Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES.

ROOF RENOVATION
The renovation of Peck Hall roof is scheduled for the week of May 21-27, 2006, and should take three to four weeks to complete.

IN THE WORKS

FOUNDERS HALL PAINTING
Update May 14, 2006: Painting has begun and is moving rapidly. The change to gray in place of the pink and orange was a surprise to some and the first coat didn’t look very good as the pink or orange bled through. The second coat has eliminated the appearance problem. New signage for the School of Business is being placed in the center of the west wall between the second and third floor levels. The painting operation has eliminated the main stairwell as a means of travel between floors, but work should be completed by May 15, 2006, and will greatly improve the appearance of the atrium.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update May 14, 2006: The architect has recommended (and FM concurs) that emergency repairs be made to seal the windows of the Classroom/Administration Building to stop winter drafts. Repair of the operating hardware was considered, but would be a waste of money as these windows will be replaced in the summer of 2007.

ADA PROJECT
Update May 14, 2006: CDB issued some of their review comments and one reviewer rejected the submitted drawings. Though disappointing, the new team members from the architects and engineers have been more responsive, and FM expects corrections to be made quickly. Once the CDB reviewer receives the corrections, FM should soon have final drawing approval. Now, all that is needed is for the state to approve the monies for the project.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update May 14, 2006: The final review meeting to walk through and approve the punch list work was postponed five days to allow the contractor to finalize his work. A few odds and ends remain to complete, and a couple of issues need further discussion, but the project will have reached substantial completion following the final punch list review.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update May 14, 2006: The control joints were filed with sealant at Vadalabene Center, Alumni Hall, and most of Founders Hall. Cleaning of the precast panels has been completed at Alumni Hall and part of Founders Hall, with the remainder of the cleaning and application of the water repellant to be completed in the next two weeks. A heavy duty water repellant will be applied to the Vadalabene Center since the white panels are not precast concrete, but a plaster type product. The heavy duty repellant will seal the fine cracks and the larger cracks will be cleaned and filled with caulking. The most noticeable part of the mason’s work is the brick replacement. Bricks were ordered and delivered for this project and appeared to be similar in color. Unfortunately, once they were installed, the cleaning process washed off the textured coating and left the bricks smooth, in a lighter brown color. The coating was applied by the manufacturer, and some of it will bake into the surface when the bricks are fired. Some of the coating doesn’t fuse with the brick, and that is what washes off. The contractor plans to stain the installed brick to match and has re-ordered brick. This time, the manufacturer will verify the color before the bricks are shipped.

BLUFF VIEW AND ST. JOSEPH HEAD START
The University has a number of Head Start facilities housed in older buildings that come with a variety of maintenance issues. St. Joseph Head Start has a boiler system for heating and one of the pipes runs underground. The pipe has deteriorated over the years and water is leaking out of it. A replacement line will be installed to end the leaking and save the program money. Similarly, the Head Start program housed at Bluff View in Caseyville has a broken drain line. The drain line will be replaced and all new water closet operating components will be installed. Nothing glamorous or earth shaking about either project, yet the work will provide a major service to the users and an opportunity to save program monies.
