March 19-25, 2006 WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT “Words to Live By…?” just before the Service Numbers “Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him, and to let him know that you trust him.” Booker T. Washington WHAT’S NEW? EAU~DE~PRE-EMERGENT IN THE WORKS EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update March 19, 2006: The architects are completing another “Small Projects” job replacing the fans in the exhaust hood over the grille in the cafeteria. This hood has not cleared the smoke as originally designed; the problem has been identified and will now be corrected. The ceiling in the kitchen and adjacent dining area were stained by the smoke, so a separate project will include cleaning, repainting and replacing the ceiling pads. Another “Small Project” is the completion of the perimeter fence. The original contractor went bankrupt, and a new contractor (to be selected via bidding) will complete the repairs to the fence and paint it. ADA PROJECT Update March 19, 2006: The revised 100% contract documents have arrived! FM will review them at the same time as CDB. The ADA Committee, involved from the start, will review the documents, also. It is hoped that the miscellaneous problems have been corrected and they can soon be issued for bidding. However, the State may still withhold the funds and bid documents will be delayed to await the Governor’s action. SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION Update March 19, 2006: Progress continues as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters install the casework. Several units are in place with the base cabinet plumbing and electrical connections complete. Several of the base units also have the vertical “back” wall installed; that is, the approximate 2 foot high vertical element that extends above the countertop. Some of the X-Ray screens were tested; they lit up nicely, but the gas cocks which are also operational were not checked. Dimensions and under floor utility services have been checked and the remaining double casework units will be installed by the end of the week. The good news is that these double cabinets are going in faster than expected. The single side cabinets have been promised for delivery on March 27th. The contractors need them by that date to fulfill their April 30th construction completion date, which they say is a reasonable date for completion. Flooring in the operatories is scheduled to begin at the end of March. Final smoothing of the grade around the building will be completed and seed will be planted this week. Hopefully, a light spring rain will fall the get the grass off to a good start. MASONRY RENOVATION Update March 19, 2006: The contractor has indicated he will return to our campus on March 20, 2006, a return that is weather dependent as cold, wet, or snowy weather will prevent his return. Hopefully, the weather forecasters who are predicting dry weather with minimum temperatures of 40 degrees will be correct since that range and type of weather will permit the contractor to work. FM has one issue to resolve with CDB regarding the reconstruction of the retaining walls at Founders and Alumni Halls, but FM feels confident a viable agreement can be reached that will allow for rebuilding of the walls. WORDS TO LIVE BY…?
If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you. Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with. Nothing in the known universe travels faster than a bad check. Vital papers will demonstrate their vitality by moving from where you left them to where you can’t find them. Always remember: Pillage, THEN burn. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was. Paranoids are people, too: they have their own problems. It’s easy to criticize, but if everybody hated you, you’d be paranoid, too. If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried. Eagles may soar, but weasels aren’t sucked into jet engines.
