WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

May it be made of 100 year old oak.
And may we plant the tree together, tomorrow.”

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

WHAT’S NEW?

SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems.  The Walk-Through of Peck Hall was held on February 3, 2006.  Building occupants shared their concerns and FM management was able to review work done in 2005 and familiarize themselves with work that remains.

The Walk-Through of Founders and Alumni Halls provided an opportunity for Bob Washburn, FM Director, to share some surprising results of the 2005 Walk.  In an effort to improve traffic flow on the stairs, building occupants asked if windows could be installed in stairwell doors so students could see someone on the other side of the door.  Further investigation revealed that not only were the windows needed, entire doors needed to be replaced.  The result was a $280,000.00 project to replace the doors in both buildings which should begin this summer.  Kudos for the building occupants’ observations that will lead to safer buildings for all!

The next Walk-Through is scheduled for March 24, 2006, in Dunham Hall.

KEY REMINDER
Key inventories should have been returned to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

IN THE WORKS

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update March 12, 2006:  The A/E firm is doing site investigation in preparation for developing the scope of work on the exterior renovation project.  They will look at the exterior walls and photograph the damage, and then use the photos in the contract documents to tell the contractor what work has to be completed.  The photos also provide a good record of conditions at the time of the survey.  FM has found the photographs very helpful in discussing work with the contractors and architects.

ADA PROJECT
Update March 12, 2006:  The architects are alive and working on the project; this is known since they sent an email suggesting several ideas and possible changes to the design.  Unfortunately, one of the suggestions cannot be accepted as CDB made a decision regarding the idea several years ago and won’t change their position.  Though it would have been a nice extra, fortunately, it does not affect the work to be done.  FM has not heard anything further on the delivery of the 100% drawings.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update March 12, 2006:  The eight double sided casework units were delivered; the electricians and plumbers are working to make all the required piping connections before the casework can be set into place.  Once the casework is installed, the electricians and plumbers complete all the interior connections.  The carpenters will install the casework and countertops for the single units.  The countertop for the double units requires seams, to the General Contractor has determined it would be wise to hire an experienced countertop installer.  The mechanical contractor is resolving a problem with one of the VAV boxes, which will then enable the Test and Balance Contractor to do his work.  The General still thinks the work will be completed by the end of April, but is hedging a little, recognizing the possibility of a construction problem.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update March 12, 2006:  FM has requested that the Masonry contractor provide an updated schedule.  Though FM is aware that rain can stop work and delay some, we would like to see him return to campus.  However, the precast concrete has to be completely dry and the sealant manufacturer has minimum conditions to be met before they will guarantee their product.  So, while it is frustrating to see nice work days pass without work, having the installation done correctly and in compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations to maintain the warranty is most important.

LAWS OF THE NATURAL UNIVERSE

Law of Probability:  The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.

Law of the Telephone:  When you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal.

Law of the Alibi:  If you tell the boss you were late for work because you had a flat tire, the very next morning you will have a flat tire.

Variation Law:  If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will start to move faster than the one you are in now.  (Works every time!)

Law of Close Encounters:  The probability of meeting someone you know increases when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with.

Law of the Result:  When you try to prove to someone that a machine won’t work, it will.

Law of Biomechanics:  The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.

Law of Coffee:  As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.

Brown’s Law:  If the shoe fits, it’s ugly.

Law of Reality:  Murphy was an optimist.
