WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Ah,
Newlyweds!” just before the Service Numbers

WHAT’S NEW?
NOT FOR SWIMMING OR DIVING…
On Wednesday, June 21, 2006, the building engineer for Founders Hall
discovered the drain pan on Air Handling Unit #4 had leaked all night and
Founders Hall, Room 3307, had an inch of water on the floor! He
quickly contacted Plumbers to unplug the drain, Building Service Workers
for clean up assistance, Groundsmen for furniture moving so the carpet
could be vacuumed and dry, and Carpenters to replace soaked, bulging
ceiling tiles. No sooner did it seem things were under control than
it was discovered the water had seeped through to the computer rooms on
the second floor, also, and the clean up process began again.
Naturally, events such as this one cannot be predicted, but the quick
thinking and responses of these FM employees certainly helped to minimize
a situation that could have been much, much worse.
REMINDER
WATER TOWER PAINTING
The exterior of the water tower will receive some much needed maintenance
beginning July 5, 2006. The tower will receive a new overcoat of
paint and the SIUE logo will be updated. During the work, the tank
will be drained to prevent condensation which would be detrimental to the
paint. After the tank is drained, campus will be supplied from the
backup feed from the City of Edwardsville. Water service to campus
should not be interrupted; however, should problems arise that
necessitate a boil order; the campus community will be kept
informed. As always, FM appreciates the support.
SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing
valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The
Walk-Through of the Vadalabene Center/Student Fitness Center was held
Thursday, June 22, 2006, and proved to be very enlightening; the
Walk-Through of the Science Building will be scheduled next.
Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at
www.siue.edu/FACILITIES
.
VACATION E-MAIL ADDRESSES
The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email
to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when
individuals may be on vacation. If an email is for a specific
individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered,
individual email addresses are fine. However, when the email has
to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a timely manner,
the following email addresses should be used:
Hot or cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
Customer Service: E-mail (fmserv@siue.edu) or call 3711
Work Order Control: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
IN THE WORKS
SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
Update June
25, 2006: The building
has been in use for one year and along the way, various problems were
discovered and rectified. The contractor has a few trees to plant,
probably this fall when they have a better chance of survival and a few
touch-ups on the walls. All of the mechanical, electrical, and
plumbing problems have been corrected, although, as with any building,
additional issues may arise. The remaining questions for the
contractor do not affect any operations or educational functions, but
should all be resolved by this fall.
ADA PROJECT
Update June
25, 2006: The
conference call with Architect, Engineers, CDB and FM took place in early
June. Comments and directions were clarified for the Architects and
Engineers; hopefully, the final corrections will be made and 100%
complete documents will be submitted. FM still is unsure if the
State will release project funds, but will send the appeal for
funding.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update June
25, 2006: All work was
completed by the contractor and the Dental School was installing
operatory chairs and related equipment. One of the previously
tested water lines was filled with water and chemicals for cleaning and a
fitting at a valve broke. The plumbing contractor will repair the
break under warranty; this represents the occasional type of problem that
can develop prior to opening a building. Better for the problems to
happen prior to opening, though, rather than afterwards!
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update June
25, 2006: The brick
manufacturer has been on campus with samples to match the brick color and
texture. (FM was surprised to learn that “University
Brick” is not all the same color; it varies from building to building!)
FM will meet with the manufacturer to finalize the color match and the
order will be entered into their production system. They have
indicated that it would be early August before the brick will be
delivered. Then, all the holes in the brick walls and other partly
demolished brick walls will be finished. In the meantime, the
contractor will be applying a heavy duty sealer to the aggregate walls of
the Vadalabene Center. A test area of the heavier coating was done
a number of months ago and it has been effective in stopping water
penetration.
MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update June
25, 2006:
Miscellaneous ongoing projects
include the new concrete deck along the south side of the Art &
Design Building; the order has been placed for a partition system for
Graduate Painting and Textiles, and design work is ongoing to add space
to the Metalsmithing area and rework the main lobby. Room 1500 in
the Dental Clinic is proceeding on schedule and work is nearly completed
in preparation for installation of a compact rolling file cabinet
system. After the Fourth of July holiday, replacement of the
existing bathrooms with accessible facilities will begin in Building
8272.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update June
25, 2006: Approval and
monies are available to proceed with installation of blinds in several
buildings. The Architect has submitted preliminary plans for the
window replacement project, and review comments are being submitted this
week. Design work for the grill hood project and a miscellaneous
project to add some sidewalks is being completed.
Ah, Newlyweds
There are never any secrets!
A young couple decided to wed. As the big day approached, they grew
apprehensive. Each had a problem they had never before shared with
anyone, not even each other.
The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for
advice.
"Father," he said, "I am deeply concerned about the
success of my marriage. I love my fiancée, very much, but you see, I have
very smelly feet, and I'm afraid that my future wife will be put off by
them."
"No problem," said dad, "all you have to do is wash your
feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed."
Well, to him this seemed a workable solution.
The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up her
mom. "Mom," she said, "When I wake up in the morning my
breath is truly awful." "Honey," her mother consoled,
"everyone has bad breath in the morning." "No, you don't
understand. My morning breath is so bad, I'm afraid that my new husband
will not want to sleep in the same room with me."
Her mother said simply, "Try this. In the morning, get straight out
of bed, and head for the bathroom and brush your teeth. The key is, not
to say a word until you've brushed your teeth. Not a word," her
mother affirmed. Well, she thought it was certainly worth a try.
The loving couple was finally married in a beautiful ceremony. Not
forgetting the advice each had received, he with his perpetual socks and
she with her morning silence, they managed quite well. That is, until
about six months later.
Shortly before dawn, the husband wakes with a start to find that one of
his socks had come off. Fearful of the consequences, he frantically
searches the bed. This, of course, woke his bride and without thinking,
she immediately asks, "What on earth are you doing?"
"Oh, no!" he gasped in shock, "You've
swallowed my sock!"
