WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Signs for the Office Wall” just before the Service Numbers
“Cheers for the sailors that fought on the wave for it,
Cheers for the soldiers that always were brave for it,
Tears for the men that went down to the grave for it,
Here comes the flag!
~Arthur Macy, The Flag
Proudly fly the flag of our nation on Flag Day, June 14th.
WHAT’S NEW?
WATER TOWER PAINTING
The exterior of the water tower will receive some much needed maintenance beginning July 5, 2006. The tower will receive a new overcoat of paint and the SIUE logo will be updated. During the work, the tank will be drained to prevent condensation which would be detrimental to the paint. After the tank is drained, campus will be supplied from the backup feed from the City of Edwardsville. Water service to campus should not be interrupted; however, should problems arise that necessitate a boil order, the campus community will be kept informed. As always, FM appreciates the support.
DON’T TOUCH, PLEASE
The Campus Community is asked to be especially mindful when admiring art pieces on campus. Some pieces have been disturbed and some have actually been moved. Students put a great deal of time and effort into their pieces and if people just look but don’t touch, it will be greatly appreciated.
SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The Walk-Through of the Vadalabene/Student Fitness Center is scheduled for Friday, June 23, 2006. Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES
VACATION E-MAIL ADDRESSES
The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when individuals may be on vacation. If an email is for a specific individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered, individual email addresses are fine. However, when the email has to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a timely manner, the following email addresses should be used:
Hot or cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
Customer Service: E-mail (fmserv@siue.edu) or call 3711
Work Order Control: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
IN THE WORKS
NOTE: Rick Klein will not be providing updates for the next two weeks as he takes vacation to walk his daughter down the aisle.
SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
Nine months after Substantial Completion, a walk-through of the facility was conducted. Primarily, warranty items were checked, but problems that may have developed as the building was used and as the seasons changed were also looked for. A one year warranty on the building is in place to present an opportunity to “test drive” the building through all seasons. (For example, the heating system may work great, but the air conditioning might not be set right.) A few minor problems were identified on the walk, and the appropriate contractors will return to make the proper corrections.
ADA PROJECT
Update June 4, 2006: Next on the agenda is a conference call between the architects, engineers, CDB and the University. The architects and engineers want to ensure that they fully understand each comment from the review process and discuss alternate ideas as needed.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update June 4, 2006: The final clean up of the parking lot and site have been completed. A few miscellaneous questions remain, and the architects and engineers are reviewing the contractor’s responses. Once those issues are determined, contractors will complete their final work. The Dental School is assembling and installing the dental chairs, X-ray equipment, and other smaller equipment items.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update June 4, 2006: The masonry contractor won’t be seen on site much this summer. He has completed most of his work with the exception of brick replacement on Lovejoy Library, Peck, Founders and Alumni Halls. The brick manufacturer has promised delivery of the correct bricks by the first of August, so the contractor is completing odds and ends while awaiting the arrival of the bricks.
MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update June 4, 2006: The contractor will be pouring the concrete slab behind the Art & Design Building very soon. A study for a low wall around the concrete slab has slightly slowed the construction work; a decision has been made for the contractor to make a minor adjustment to his slab edge to allow for the wall. This wall will be brick and block; the work will await the brick currently being manufactured for the Masonry Renovation project. Another Art & Design project involves the Graduate Painting and Textiles Studio, where a new partition system has been designed to alleviate the cluttered and cramped current conditions.
The conversion of an old classroom to a dispensing area begins next week at the Alton Dental Clinic. Some doors will be closed, a double door will be installed, and two half window openings will be installed in the corridor to facilitate pick up of dental work trays.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update May 28, 2006: Some small projects are ready to move forward, but delayed by unforeseen circumstances. For example, the company that installed the fence returned to repair and repaint portions of it, but went bankrupt before completing the repairs. Now, CDB has legal issues to resolve before another contractor can be hired. The ceiling in the cafeteria will be replaced after the exhaust fan in the grill hood is replaced and the exterior water leaks are fixed. Preliminary plans for the exterior work package have been submitted for review, though, so some progress is being made.
SIGNS FOR THE OFFICE WALL
I can please only one person per day and today is not your day.
Tomorrow doesn’t look good either.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.
I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.
Two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts do.
I'd explain it to you but your brain would explode.
Am I getting smart with you? ....How would you know?
My Reality Check bounced.
On the keyboard of life, always keep one finger on the escape key.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate!
I don't suffer from stress. I'm a carrier.
