WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Everyone
Has Met This Guy” just before the Service Numbers
“We don't like their sound,
and guitar music is on the way out.”

WHAT’S NEW?
WATER TOWER PAINTING
Those who notice
the Assistant Director for Building Services and
Grounds, Steve Brandenburg, walking through campus marking trees with
orange paint should not be alarmed. As part of the Campus Landscape
Upgrade, the trees will be removed due to disease or because they have
reached the end of their life cycle. Removal of these redbud and
crabapple trees will make way for the eighty new flowering redbuds and
crabapples to be planted as part of maintaining the beautiful campus of
SIUE.
IN MEMORY
Campus flags fly at half-staff on Saturday, July 8, 2006, in memory of
Sgt. Terry M. Lisk, 26, United States Army, of Fox Lake, Illinois, dead
in the war in Iraq on June 26, 2006.
HAPPY TRAILS
On June 19, 2006, the University community was notified that the bridge
between the Science Building and the Vadalabene Center over the bike path
would be closed for two weeks. During the process of sandblasting
the bridge, structural damage to the steel beams was discovered.
The beams would have to be replaced before the installation of deck
boards and the painting of the bridge could take place. This delay,
in addition to the Fourth of July holiday, meant the bridge would be
closed until July 14, 2006. A different project, one to make
repairs to the bike trail from Metcalf Theater to the entrance to Lot A,
has begun and will extend the time the trail is closed through
mid-August. FM regrets the delay and appreciates the patience of
the University community.
SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing
valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The
Walk-Through of the Science Building is scheduled for July 19,
2006. Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at

VACATION E-MAIL
ADDRESSES
The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email
to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when
individuals may be on vacation. If an email is for a specific
individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered,
individual email addresses are fine. However, when the email
has
to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a timely manner,
the following email addresses should be used:
Hot or cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu)
or call 3711
Customer Service: E-mail (fmserv@siue.edu)
or call 3711
Work Order Control: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu)

IN
THE WORKS
ADA PROJECT
Update July 9,
2006: FM and CDB are
hoping that no news is good news. Nothing has been heard from the
Architects and Engineers on the completion of the contract documents, so
for now, the silence is being interpreted as work activity to complete
the drawings. The new project manager has been good about keeping
schedules and all of his questions have been resolved, so expectations
are high.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL
CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update July 9,
2006: The first patients
were scheduled for procedures this week. A few minor problems have
been resolved, and a few remain to be completed by the contractors.
Fortunately, the outstanding issues do not affect the internal
operations, so the student dentists and their patients can proceed
without disruption.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update July 9,
2006: FM met with the
brick manufacturer to finalize the color selection of the brick.
The order has been put into the schedule and expectations are that the
brick will be manufactured and delivered by mid-August. As the date
approaches, a better confirmation will come from the manufacturer.
MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update July 9,
2006: The
School of Educations has several renovations underway. One improved
the waiting room for Special Students. The room was enlarged and
sliding glass divider windows were installed that separate the waiting
room and office while allowing communication. A combination office
suite, study suite, and storage area south of the waiting area is
currently being renovated. One office was retained and enclosed
storage rooms and work rooms were added. A large open area will
provide space for teaching, a children’s interactive play/study area, and
open work space. A classroom has been rehabilitated for
Kinesiology, although the replacement ceiling tile and repainting of the
ceiling grid are still scheduled for completion. The conversion of
the classroom in the Dental Clinic has progressed. The new door
frame arrived and has been installed in preparation for installation of a
compact filing system by an outside contractor. Once it is
installed, new flooring will be installed, light fixtures will be
adjusted for proper lighting over the filing system, rolling shutters
will be installed in the corridor wall, and miscellaneous clean up and
touch up will be finished.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER
EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update July 9,
2006: Several small
projects are scheduled by CDB for the East St. Louis Campus. One
would add a sidewalk from James R. Thompson Boulevard to the kitchen
located in Building B to enhance deliveries to the cafeteria.
Another will add concrete walks around the flag poles and a water meter
(pretty exciting stuff, huh?), in addition to other similar campus
improvements. Each of these small projects meets a need on the
campus, but as they are so scattered, most people won’t even notice them.
Everyone Has Met This Guy
A large company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new
CEO. This new boss was determined to rid the company of all
slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy
leaning on a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to
let them know he meant business!
The new CEO walked up to the guy leaning against the wall and asked, “How
much money do you make a week?” A little surprised, the young
fellow looked at him and replied, “I make $300.00 a week.
Why?”
The CEO then handed the guy $1200 in cash and screamed, “Here’s four
weeks’ pay, now GET OUT and don’t come back.”
Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and
asked, “Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did
here?”
From across the room came a voice, “…delivered pizza from
Domino’s…”
