WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Important Measurements” just before the Service Numbers

“October.  This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks.  The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February.”
Mark Twain

WHAT’S NEW?

AN OPEN INVITATION
PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN DATE AND LOCATION!
All building occupants are invited to a casual get-together with FM Building Coordinators on July 26, 2006.  Building Coordinators work throughout the year to assist Facilities with building problems and issues.  Not familiar with the program?  Come visit the Supporting Services Building on the 26th from 1-3 p.m. to share information and/or get answers to questions regarding Facilities Management’s Building Coordinator Program (or anything about Facilities at all).  A shuttle will be available in the Hairpin to bring groups to Facilities.  It will be running at 15 minute intervals or as often as a group gathers.

What a busy summer this year!  Renovations are taking place, and new card access readers are being installed on all core buildings for after-hours access. New floor mats are on order as are new ash urns, trash containers, auto scrubbers, and a restroom cleaner that deep cleans surfaces in restrooms.  Faded road signs will be replaced, and the walls of the VC Gym and locker rooms are being painted.  Speed drives for the heating and air conditioning units are being installed to save energy and enhance the comfort of building occupants.  The campus re-lamp is continuing as is the Campus Landscape Plan planting. Various projects are being completed in and around the Art & Design Building, and roof and road repairs continue.  Additionally, the trail from Metcalf Theater to the entrance of Lot A will be repaired and back in service for the fall.

Obviously, there will be no shortage of things to talk about!  Please plan to stop by; it should be fun and casual and who knows?  It could even be informative and helpful!

ELECTRIC AVENUE?
In the stormiest work week the Metro-East area has experienced for quite a while, a severe storm on Wednesday evening, July 19, 2006, resulted in a power outage in a number of buildings on the Alton campus and on Friday, July 21, 2006, another storm left the Edwardsville campus without power.  In Alton, the storm on Friday knocked down a power pole; the transformer was on the ground, and the south side of campus was without power.

IN HONOR…
Campus flags fly at half-staff on Saturday, July 22, 2006, on behalf of Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jerry Tharp, 44, of Aledo, Illinois, who died in the war in Iraq on July 12, 2006.

NEW LAWS IMPACT UNIVERSITY DRIVERS
The following information from Transportation should be considered by those driving University vehicles:

New Diesel Idling Law Impacts Fleet
A new law took effect July 1 to prevent stationary diesel vehicles of more than 8,000 pounds from idling for more than 10 minutes in the Chicago land area and in the St. Louis Metro-East Region. The law applies to vehicles operating in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards. It provides exemptions from the idling limits when the outdoor air temperature is below 32 degrees or above 80 degrees. Other exemptions are granted to account for emergencies, traffic congestion, loading/unloading, when drivers are sleeping in a sleeper berth, and certain other situations. A violator could be fined $50 for a first offense and $150 for a second or subsequent offense within any
12-month period. This law applies to state fleet vehicles.

Work Zone Fines
IDOT announced that Photo Speed Enforcement Vans will reduce work zone crashes and save lives. The goal is to protect lives of both workers and citizens traveling through work zones. The vans are equipped with the latest photo radar technology designed to record the speed and capture clear images of the driver and license plate. Tickets will be sent by certified mail within six business days to offenders. Under the toughened work zone speeding fines, first time offenders face a $375 fine; second time offenders face a $1,000 fine and loss of license for 90 days.

ONGOING ROAD REPAIRS
Road repairs to South University Drive began Wednesday, July 19, 2006.  One lane will be closed as repairs are made; drivers are advised to use caution and drive slowly.  Crack filling of University roads began Thursday, July 20, 2006.  Traffic flow will continue, but again drivers must be cautious.  Work is scheduled for completion Friday, July 21, 2006.  Facilities Management appreciates the patience of the University community.

SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. The Walk-Through of the Science Building was held on July 19, 2006, with a record crowd already gathered in the Conference Room awaiting the FM team’s arrival.  Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web page at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES.

VACATION E-MAIL ADDRESSES
The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when individuals may be on vacation.  If an email is for a specific individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered, individual email addresses are fine.  However, when the email has to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a timely manner, the following email addresses should be used:

Hot or cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
Customer Service:  E-mail (fmserv@siue.edu) or call 3711
Work Order Control:  E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711

IN THE WORKS

HAPPY TRAILS
Update July 23, 2006:  The contractor has made good progress with tree and bush removal, clearing the old pathway and starting to reshape the hillside.  The electrical contractor has removed the old light poles, formed new bases and poured concrete in preparation for reinstalling the light poles.

ADA PROJECT
Update July 23, 2006:  Review of the drawings is proceeding on the Edwardsville campus and at CDB; comments from SIUE should be ready later this week.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update July 23, 2006:  Coating the aggregate panels at the Vadalabene Center was scheduled the week of July 16th.  However, the hot weather and the rain delayed the application.  The brick manufacturer has new samples ready to match the core building brick and once approved, he will provide the color formula for the scheduled manufacturing run.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update July 23, 2006:    Several construction people where happy to have interior demolition work during the hot spell.  Existing partitions were removed in Graduate Painting and Graduate Textile Studios at the Art & Design Building.  Demolition of partitions and removal of concrete floor is scheduled for Building 8272 at Alton; however, due to the power failure and air conditioning damage from the storms, the clinic was closed.  Building 8272 served as an emergency clinic in the interim.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update July 23, 2006:  Plans to renovate the exterior shell of the original ESLHEC buildings were received.  High on the priority list was window replacement, windows jokingly referred to as “ready to fall out of the wall.”  Unfortunately, the Wednesday storm proved the saying right as one long window unit fell into the room and another was twisted half out of the wall.  Temporary window closures will be made as a long term solution is sought.  FM is working with CDB for emergency replacement.

WATER TOWER PAINTING
Update July 16, 2006:  The SIUE water tower was taken out of service on Friday, June 30, 2006; however, due to various delays, work did not begin until Thursday, July 13, 2006.  Prep work is ongoing; the project is expected to take three weeks.
