WHAT’S
NEW?
AN OPEN
INVITATION
All building occupants are invited to a casual get-together with FM
Building Coordinators on July 25, 2006. Building Coordinators
work
throughout the year to assist Facilities with building problems and
issues. Not familiar with the program? Come visit
on the
25th from 1-3
p.m. in the International Room of Morris
University Center to share information and/or get answers to questions
regarding Facilities Management’s Building Coordinator
Program (or
anything about Facilities at all).
What a busy summer this year! Renovations are taking place,
and new
card access readers are being installed on all core buildings for
after-hours access. New floor mats are on order as are new ash urns,
trash containers, auto scrubbers, and a restroom cleaner that deep
cleans
surfaces in restrooms! Faded road signs will be replaced, and
the
walls of the VC Gym as well as locker rooms, are being
painted.
Speed drives for the heating and air conditioning units are being
installed to save on energy and enhance the comfort of building
occupants. The campus re-lamp is continuing as is the Campus
Landscape Plan planting. Various projects are being completed in and
around the Art & Design Building, and roof and road repairs
continue. Additionally, the trail from Metcalf Theater to the
entrance of Lot A will be repaired and back in service for the fall.
Obviously, there will be no shortage of things to talk about!
Please plan to stop by; it should be fun and casual and who
knows?
It could even be informative and helpful!
NEW LAWS IMPACT
UNIVERSITY DRIVERS
The
following information from Transportation should be considered by
those driving University vehicles:
New
Diesel Idling Law Impacts Fleet
A
new law took effect July 1 to prevent stationary diesel vehicles of
more than 8,000 pounds from idling for more than 10 minutes in the
Chicago land area and in the St. Louis Metro-East Region. The law
applies
to vehicles operating in areas that do not meet federal air quality
standards. It provides exemptions from the idling limits when the
outdoor
air temperature is below 32 degrees or above 80 degrees. Other
exemptions
are granted to account for emergencies, traffic congestion,
loading/unloading, when drivers are sleeping in a sleeper berth, and
certain other situations. A violator could be fined $50 for a first
offense and $150 for a second or subsequent offense within any
12-month
period. This law applies to state fleet vehicles.
Work
Zone Fines
IDOT
announced that Photo Speed Enforcement Vans will reduce work zone
crashes and save lives. The goal is to protect lives of both workers
and
citizens traveling through work zones. The vans are equipped with the
latest photo radar technology designed to record the speed and capture
clear images of the driver and license plate. Tickets will be sent by
certified mail within six business days to offenders. Under the
toughened
work zone speeding fines, first time offenders face a $375 fine; second
time offenders face a $1,000 fine and loss of license for 90 days.
SO MUCH
HELP…
Again in 2006,
the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing
valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems.
The
Walk-Through of the Science Building is scheduled for July 19,
2006. Minutes of each Walk-Through are posted on the FM web
page at www.siue.edu/FACILITIES
.
VACATION E-MAIL
ADDRESSES
The
departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email
to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when
individuals may be on vacation. If an email is for a specific
individual, and it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered,
individual email addresses are fine. However, when the email
has
to do with a situation that needs to be addressed in a timely manner,
the following email addresses should be used:
Hot or
cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu)
or call 3711

THE WORKS
WATER TOWER PAINTING
Update July 16, 2006:
The SIUE water tower was taken out of service on
Friday, June 30, 2006; however, due to various delays, work did not
begin until Thursday, July 13, 2006. Prep work is ongoing;
the project
is expected to take three weeks.
HAPPY TRAILS
Update July 16, 2006:
On June 19, 2006, the University community was
notified that the bridge between the Science Building and the
Vadalabene Center over the bike path would be closed for two
weeks.
All of the work by Facilities Management was complete on Friday, July
14, 2006. A different project, one to make repairs to the
bike trail
from Metcalf Theater to the entrance to Lot A, has been started by a
contractor and will extend the time the trail is closed through
mid-August. FM regrets the delay and appreciates the patience
of the
University community.
ADA PROJECT
Update July 16,
2006: The good news: the architect
kept his promise
to deliver review sets of plans and specifications; the bad news: this is
the fourth submission of 100% documents. These drawings will
be reviewed by SIUE and CDB; hopefully, just a few comments will
result. Once this review is complete, FM will await the
release of the
monies by the State.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update July 16,
2006: The clear seal coating materials are to be
delivered to the Vadalabene Center this week and installation should
begin shortly thereafter. During the application onto the
white
precast type exterior wall panels, the east entrance to the gymnasium
will be closed for several days. Also, the parking lot
immediately
west of the gymnasium will be closed to protect cars from
overspray.
Hopefully, there will be little inconvenience for building
users.
Delivery of the brick order is expected in mid to late August; repairs
will resume at that time.
MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update July 16, 2006:
Work continues in the special education
work/study area in the School of Education. Repairs to the
ceiling
grid and HVAC system are being completed and new ceiling tile is being
installed. Drywall installation is also complete and painting
will
begin soon. Unfortunately, doors are long lead time items, so
the new
double doors for the room will be coming at a later time.
Designs for
the wall to partially enclose the new concrete slab on the south side
of the Art & Design Building are complete, and the project will
go
out for bid soon. The goal is to complete the wall before
school
begins. The classroom in the Dental Clinic is undergoing
transformation to a dispensing room. Most of the remodeling
was
completed and the compact filing system components are being
installed. The project should be complete this month.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER
EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update July 9, 2006:
One very noticeable project will be the
replacement of the ceiling in the cafeteria. This poor
ceiling has
suffered from two problems: roof/wall leaks and smoke damage
from the
improperly functioning grill exhaust hood. A new roof last
year
reduced the ceiling water damage, but repairs to the brick walls above
remain in the schedule along with exterior enhancements planned in
another project. Corrections to the grill hood exhaust system
are
planned in yet another small CDB project. The grill hood
project is
scheduled before the exterior enhancements, so the ceiling grid will be
cleaned and repainted and most of the ceiling tile will be
replaced.
Once the wall repairs are complete, the extra tile as well as the
ceiling tile will be installed.
CHURCH BULLETIN BLOOPERS
- Due to the
Rector’s illness, Wednesday’s healing services will
be discontinued until further notice.
- The Rev.
Merriwether spoke briefly, much to the delight of the audience.
- On a
church bulletin during the minister’s illness: GOD
IS GOOD; Dr. Hargreaves is better.
- The pastor
will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing,
“Break Forth Into Joy.”
- Sermon
Outline: 1. Delineate your fear, 2. Disown your fear, 3.
Displace your rear.
- Next
Sunday, Mrs. Vinson will be soloist for the morning service.
The
pastor will then speak on “It’s a Terrible
Experience.”
- We are
grateful for the help of those who cleaned up the grounds around the
church building and the rector.
- Barbara
remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more
transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and
requests tapes
of Pastor Nelson’s sermons.
- During the
absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good
sermon when J.F. Stubbs supplied our pulpit.
- Remember
in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community.
