“Oh, Those Kids!” just before the Service Numbers
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal;
nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”

WHAT’S
NEW?
CRITICAL EQUIPMENT
Departments or individuals with critical equipment need to be notified as soon as possible of pending utility outages. Here are the steps to take to be certain of notification:
1. Let Facilities Management know; send an e-mail to fmserv@siue.edu detailing where the equipment is located and the utility concern.
2. Make sure the departmental office knows; in most cases the Chair/Dean and the departmental secretary should know.
3. Make sure the Building Coordinator knows. Building Coordinators are listed on the Facilities Management website at: http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/custserv/bcroster.htm
Though Facilities Management tries to let the campus know of outages via the listservs, the information can take as long as four hours to be delivered. The best back up is a phone call to the Building Coordinators and, in the Science Building, departmental offices.
BE SMART ON SNOWY/ICY DAYS
When the weather turns bad and the university gets snow and ice on campus walkways, first priority for snow/ice removal is given to the entrances marked “SNOW ROUTES.” Check at: http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/campmap/snow.htm for a map. A favorite shortcut down the stairs at the back of the building will not be cleaned as early or as often as the Snow Route entrances. If there is a problem with snow or ice at any main building entrance or walkway, please report it to extension 3711 or 3711.
HONORING THE FALLEN
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Friday, January 20, 2006, to honor Marine Lance Cpl. Jonathan K. Price, 19, of Woodlawn, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on January 13, 2006.
IN
THE WORKS
LIFE AND FIRE SAFETY-WEDGING DOORS OPEN
When architects design a building, they provide fire separations to protect occupants and to allow occupants a safe exit from the building during an emergency. A key component of that fire separation is the fire doors, and the key concept is that the doors remain closed to provide a continuous fire separation between areas. The most obvious fire separation is the walls around stairwells, and the doors into the stairwells have automatic closers that swing the door shut. There are also fire divisions within the building and frequently, on a pair of doors across the corridor, both doors will have automatic door closers. Doors into rooms from the corridor are often fire doors, especially in buildings erected in the past 15 years, and have the automatic door closers. Fire doors normally have a label on the hinged edge, but not necessarily all the time, plus they have automatic door closers. In some cases, magnetic door holders have been installed that permit the door to remain open, but will close during an emergency. Common practice on campus has been to wedge doors open for convenience. Typically, these are doors into rooms from corridors and doors within corridors. These doors have automatic door closers and swing shut after use, so constant opening is required. Many of the propped open doors are fire safety doors and the lengthy explanation above was provided to explain that wedges in the doors are illegal and potentially dangerous as a fire could spread down a hallway, preventing people from escaping the building in an emergency.
In addition, wedges damage the door hinges, costing the University money to replace hinges that could be spent on other facility maintenance needs. Facilities employees remove wedges whenever they see them, but they are quickly replaced. What action can building occupants take? 1) Remove all wedges from doors that are propped open. 2) Call Rick Klein, Campus Architect, at 3575, to see if a door is a required fire door, then, 3) accept that the door has to remain closed or, 4) submit a Service Requisition to have magnetic hold opens added to that door or doors. Facilities will provide a cost estimate for the installation of a magnetic hold open; in general the cost is under $1000 each, but is dependant on the location of electrical power and the fire alarm system.
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update January 22, 2006: The small electrical project is underway at ESLHEC. The contractor is installing underground wiring for lights at the entrance sign and the flagpoles. The interior work will be scheduled for a rainy day. A major project to rehabilitate the exterior of the building was also started. A meeting with the architects was held and negotiations between CDB and the architects and engineers will occur next week. Once a contract is signed, the architect will begin to design a window replacement project for Buildings A and B. Since the windows are ready to fall out of the wall and have been temporarily anchored, it is, of course, vital that they be replaced as quickly as possible. Other work, such as enclosing the stair vestibules on Building A, repair of the brick on the original buildings, and re-roofing the sloped roofs on Building C, will be designed separately and will follow soon after the window work.
ADA PROJECT
Update January 22, 2006: A meeting with the architect has been scheduled to discuss the review comments. The architect will provide a schedule to correct the drawings and proceed to finish the drawings and specifications.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update January 22, 2006: The casework supplier is finishing the cabinet mock-up this week, and it will be reviewed as soon as it is delivered to the site. He has established a schedule that should allow the full project to be completed by the end of April. FM will monitor the casework supplier as well as the General Contractor to see the schedule is fulfilled.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update January 22, 2006: Like bears in hibernation, the contractors have disappeared from the masonry renovation, though FM was aware this would happen when cold weather set in. The beautiful weather appearing from time to time allows for completion of some punch list work at the Alton campus; however, a single nice day is not enough time to do much at Edwardsville.
Oh, Those Kids!
A three year old put on his shoes by himself. His mother noticed the left was on the right foot. “Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet.” He looked up at her with a raised brow and said, “Don’t kid me, Mom. I KNOW they’re my feet.”
On the first day of school, the Kindergarten teacher said, “If anyone has to go to the bathroom, hold up two fingers.” A little voice from the back of the room asked, “How will that help?”
SERVICE

VACATION E-MAIL ADDRESSES
The departmental email accounts below should be used when sending email
to Facilities Management, especially during summer months when individuals
may be on vacation. If an email is for a specific individual, and
it doesn’t matter how soon it is answered, individual email
addresses are fine. However, when the email has to do with a situation
that needs to be addressed in a timely manner, the following email
addresses should be used:
Hot or cold calls: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu)
or call 3711
Customer Service: E-mail (fmserv@siue.edu) or call 3711
Work Order Control: E-mail (fmworks@siue.edu) or call 3711
