WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“The Special Day” just before the Service Numbers

“My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start.  So far today, I have finished 2 bags of M&M’s and a chocolate cake.  I feel better already.”
Dave Barry

WHAT’S NEW?

IT’S A LOCK

Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date is February 17, 2006, to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE…

February is Children’s Dental Health Month at the SIUE SDM Alton; the weekend of February 4-5, 2006, all children will be seen free of charge.  Area school children will be seen free of charge through the balance of the month.

WE CAN HELP, REALLY WE CAN…

When temperature problems arise, the key to comfort is working with Facilities Management to provide useful information. A few do’s and don’ts:
DO call. If the problem persists, DO call again. When building engineers are called, FM assumes the problem has been corrected unless the caller notifies FM it has not.
DO be specific. How long has the problem been going on? Is there a pattern to the problem (always in the morning, afternoon, only on Mondays)? Do adjacent rooms have the same problem?
DON’T over generalize. Statements like, “This room is always hot,” or “It’s been this way forever” make it more difficult to diagnose the problem. Try to pin down the timing of the problem; overgeneralization makes diagnosis take longer and makes it more likely the building engineer won’t diagnose it correctly the first time.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT SPRING BUILDING COORDINATOR MEETING
Facilities Management will hold their spring meeting with Building Coordinators on February 16, 2006. Building Coordinators are volunteers from each building who graciously give of their time to assist FM with building problems. They are the “front line” people who assist building occupants in communication with FM, disseminate information from FM when necessary, and attend two meetings a year in the spring and fall for discussions, updates, and fun. More information on the Building Coordinator program can be found at the FM website at http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/.
FM greatly appreciates their service!

IN THE WORKS

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)

Update February 5, 2006:  In a meeting with the contractor on the small electrical project, FM accepted their work.  The flagpole lights work well, the security camera at Child Care is functional, and the light on the James R. Thompson Boulevard sign is bright.

ADA PROJECT

Update February 5, 2006:  Architects are revising the drawings and specifications for correction of the identified items.  A delivery date has not been provided as yet, but final drawings from them are expected in March.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION

Update February 5, 2006:  The rough grading on the west hillside was completed and the new sidewalk from the southwest entrance has been laid out and poured.  The casework mock-up has been installed in one of the new operatories, and vinyl sheet flooring has been installed adjacent to the new cabinet.  The installation will be reviewed this week for conformity with the design and functionality.

MASONRY RENOVATION

Update February 5, 2006:  The tuckpointing project at SIUE SDM Alton has been completed, including all punch list work, and the contractor is being closed out.  Some proposed additional work for the Edwardsville campus has been temporarily set aside while negotiations take place with the CDB regarding the need for the work.  Occasionally, an accountant will reject a proposed extra to a project because they interpret the work as outside the parameters of the appropriation.  Generally, a letter of explanation leads to approval of the change order by CDB; FM will be verifying what steps CDB requires for this work.

THE SPECIAL DAY

"I bet you don't know what day this is," said the wife to her husband as he made his way out the front door.  The husband was perplexed, but was always a quick thinker: "Of course I do, my dear. How could I forget!?" With that, he turned and rushed to catch the bus for work.  At 10 AM, the doorbell rang and when the woman opened the door, she was handed a box containing a dozen long stemmed red roses.  At 1 PM, a foil wrapped, two pound box of her favorite chocolates arrived. Later, a boutique delivered a designer dress. The woman couldn't wait for her husband to come home.  The husband was smug when he returned from work, satisfied that he had recovered what could have been a very bad situation.  His wife was indeed surprised: "First the flowers, then the chocolates and then the dress!" she exclaimed, "I've never had a more wonderful Groundhog Day in my life!"
