WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“Explosively Funny” just before the Service Numbers

“I was going to have cosmetic surgery until I noticed that the doctor’s office was full of paintings by Picasso.”
Rita Rudner

WHAT’S NEW?

REST IN PEACE
Campus flags flew at half-staff on Thursday, February 23, 2006, to honor Army Staff Sgt. Edwin H. Dazachacon, United States Army, 38, of Belleville, Illinois, killed February 13, 2006, in the war in Iraq.

IT’S A LOCK
Key inventories should have been returned to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

ALTON ALTERATIONS
The new floor in Building 8279, the Alton Science Building, has been sealed and waxed; inside window frames and trim are being painted.

IN THE WORKS

Updates continue in the next ClipBoard; Rick Klein, Campus Architect and the author of the updates, is on vacation.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update February 19, 2006:  The nice weather allowed the Small Projects Contractor to complete the landscaping repairs where he had dug the conduit runs for the exterior lights at the flagpole.  It is nice to have the work done in time for spring rains to grow the grass.  CDB hasn’t reported that the Architect for the exterior project has a contract.  FM is anxious to get this project into design so monies committed by CDB can be obtained for construction.

ADA PROJECT
Update February 19, 2006:  FM has provided the architects with their requested information to complete the ADA design.  CDB followed up on the architect’s promised schedule of delivery, but has not had a reply from the architects.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update February 19, 2006:  The casework manufacturer is correcting several panel inserts for final review by the University.  The manufacturer has completed a single side unit which the contractor will review at the manufacturer’s plant.  The manufacturer has been directed to begin constructing the casework units.  The contractor is working toward the end of April as a completion date, but has begun to extend that date into May.  He has been asked to meet the April date since it is still four months behind the contractor’s original schedule and the SDM has a celebration planned in early May.  Obviously, if the contractor doesn’t cooperate in completing the work, the celebration may be postponed.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update February 19, 2006:  Unfortunately, the periods of nice weather aren’t sufficient to warrant the contractor’s return.  In addition, some of the work requires temperatures over 50 degrees for a week, which we aren’t experiencing yet.  As a result, though everyone enjoys the nice weather, no tuckpointing or sealer work will be occurring.

Explosively Funny

Joe and Dave are hunting when Dave keels over.  Frantic, Joe dials 911 on his cell phone and blurts, “My friend just dropped dead!  What should I do?”  A soothing voice at the other end says, “Don’t worry, I can help.  First, let’s make sure he’s really dead.”  After a brief silence, the operator hears a shot.  Then Joe comes back to the phone.  “Okay,” he says nervously to the operator.  “What do I do next?”
