WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“WARNINGS!” just before the Service Numbers

“It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.”
George Washington
(letter to his niece Harriet Washington, October 30, 1791)

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character,
 give him power.”
Abraham Lincoln

WHAT’S NEW?

IT WAS THE REAL THING…
Thursday, February 16, 2006, started as a balmy day with 70 degree-temperatures, but things changed quickly and as the temperatures fell, so did the rain.  A tornado warning was issued for Madison County and the Edwardsville tornado sirens were sounded.  After checking with the city, Facilities Director Bob Washburn ordered the campus sirens sounded as well.  Following is the protocol for a tornado warning:

1. Indoor Procedures: Edwardsville (Central campus and outlying locations)

The tornado alert is a long, wavering, intermittent blast of sirens located both outside and within the core buildings.

·       Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.
·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If safe areas are not posted, go immediately to the basement or to an inner hall of a lower floor. Stay away from windows and protect yourself from flying debris by seeking shelter under a sturdy table or desk and covering your face.

 School of Dental Medicine
 a. Main Clinic

Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.

·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If safe areas are not posted, shelter areas will be central corridors not opening into the direction of the storm, central rooms having no exterior walls, or the side of the building away from the storm. Stay away from windows and protect yourself from flying debris by seeking shelter under a sturdy table or desk and covering your face.

b. Mini Clinics

Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.

·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If safe areas are not posted, go to the dispensing areas and lie on the floor. Cover your face to protect it from flying debris.

 c. Gymnasium

Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.

·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If safe areas are not posted, go to the basement of the building. Protect yourself from flying debris by seeking shelter under a sturdy table or desk and covering your face.

 d. Other Buildings

Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.

·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If safe areas are not posted, personnel in buildings having basements must move to the basement. Personnel in buildings without basements must go to the lower floors and lie on the floors of the central corridors or rooms away from the direction of the storm. Protect yourself from flying debris by seeking shelter under a sturdy table or desk and covering your face.

East St. Louis Higher Education Campus

Go immediately to safe areas as designated by “Storm Shelter” signs.

·       Assist persons with disabilities.
·       If instructions or safe areas are not posted, go immediately to the lower floors and lie on the floors of the central corridors or rooms away from the direction of the storm. Protect yourself from flying debris by seeking shelter under a sturdy table or desk and covering your face.

2.Outdoor Procedures:

Take cover, lie face down in the nearest ditch, culvert or ravine. This procedure is preferable to remaining in a vehicle, mobile home or lightweight structure. Remember that tornadoes move swiftly and are often erratic.

The tornado warning lasted approximately fifteen minutes from 4:05 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.  The second siren sounded to indicate the tornado warning had been downgraded to a tornado watch (which means no storms that pose an imminent risk have been sighted).  Fortunately, the severe weather experienced elsewhere was avoided on campus, and building occupants were able to return to their offices.

IT’S A LOCK
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date was February 17, 2006; they should be returned to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE…
February is Children’s Dental Health Month at the SIUE SDM Alton.  Area school children will be seen free of charge throughout the month.
To provide the appropriate environment in the Research Area, a floor renovation has begun in Building 8279, the Alton Science Building.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT SPRING BUILDING COORDINATOR MEETING
Facilities Management held their spring meeting with Building Coordinators on February 16, 2006.  It was a very interesting meeting as Bob Washburn, FM Director, reviewed coming changes on campus with the attendees.  Recent changes in FM services were also discussed.  Building Coordinators are volunteers from each building who graciously give of their time to assist FM with building problems. More information on the Building Coordinator program can be found at the FM website at http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/.  FM greatly appreciates their service!

IN THE WORKS

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update February 19, 2006:  The nice weather allowed the Small Projects Contractor to complete the landscaping repairs where he had dug the conduit runs for the exterior lights at the flagpole.  It is nice to have the work done in time for spring rains to grow the grass.  CDB hasn’t reported that the Architect for the exterior project has a contract.  FM is anxious to get this project into design so monies committed by CDB can be obtained for construction.

ADA PROJECT
Update February 19, 2006:  FM has provided the architects with their requested information to complete the ADA design.  CDB followed up on the architect’s promised schedule of delivery, but has not had a reply from the architects.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update February 19, 2006:  The casework manufacturer is correcting several panel inserts for final review by the University.  The manufacturer has completed a single side unit which the contractor will review at the manufacturer’s plant.  The manufacturer has been directed to begin constructing the casework units.  The contractor is working toward the end of April as a completion date, but has begun to extend that date into May.  He has been asked to meet the April date since it is still four months behind the contractor’s original schedule and the SDM has a celebration planned in early May.  Obviously, if the contractor doesn’t cooperate in completing the work, the celebration may be postponed.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update February 19, 2006:  Unfortunately, the periods of nice weather aren’t sufficient to warrant the contractor’s return.  In addition, some of the work requires temperatures over 50 degrees for a week, which we aren’t experiencing yet.  As a result, though everyone enjoys the nice weather, no tuckpointing or sealer work will be occurring.
