WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“Romance, Kid’s Version” just before the Service Numbers
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”
Coretta Scott King
(1927-2006)
Happy Valentine’s Day!
WHAT’S NEW?

A BRIGHT IDEA
As reported in the ClipBoard of May 8, 2005, Ed Matecki, Assistant Director for Utilities and Garry Sammons, FM Electric Foreman, worked together to win a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation Grant Program. The grant was to allow for installation of more efficient lighting in campus offices, and the work has begun. Most of Lovejoy Library has been re-lamped, as well as the Vadalabene Center gym. Soon, the core building stairwells and the SIUE SDM Alton Campus will be re-lamped as well. The new bulbs will provide better light levels at a lower wattage.
IT’S A LOCK
Key inventories have been mailed to departments on campus. The return date is February 17, 2006, to Campus Box 1039. Questions should be directed to extension 3200 or 3201, or e-mailed to kmurphy@siue.edu.
GIVE KIDS A SMILE…
February is Children’s Dental Health Month at the SIUE SDM Alton. Area school children will be seen free of charge throughout the month.
To provide the appropriate environment in the Research Area, a floor renovation has begun in Building 8279.
COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMERS
FM is committed to supporting and providing a safe, clean, comfortable learning and work environment to the SIUE community. If ANY facility-related problem interferes with that commitment or in any way hinders the teaching of a class or the conducting of research, immediately contact FM at 650-3711. An FM troubleshooter will be dispatched without delay.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT SPRING BUILDING COORDINATOR MEETING
Facilities Management will hold their spring meeting with Building Coordinators on February 16, 2006. Building Coordinators are volunteers from each building who graciously give of their time to assist FM with building problems. They are the “front line” people who assist building occupants in communication with FM, disseminate information from FM when necessary, and attend two meetings a year in the spring and fall for discussions, updates, and fun. More information on the Building Coordinator program can be found at the FM website at http://www.siue.edu/FACILITIES/.
FM greatly appreciates their service!
IN THE WORKS
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update February 12, 2006: CDB is negotiating a design contract with an A/E to design corrections and modifications to the exterior of the original buildings on the campus. Cracks in the brick and joints, along with window failures, have allowed water and air penetration into the buildings, causing additional deterioration. Plans will be developed to alleviate these problems and will include new windows which will, in turn improve energy efficiency within the buildings. Stairwells in Building A will be enclosed to improve circulation between the first and second floors.
ADA PROJECT
Update February 12, 2006: It was reported in last week’s ClipBoard that architects are revising the drawings and specifications for correction of the identified items. A delivery date had not been provided as yet, but final drawings from them are expected in March. As of February 10, 2006, no news had been received from the Architects regarding the corrections. CDB is contacting the A/E to determine when the resubmission of the drawings will be made.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update February 12, 2006: The mock up cabinet was installed in the new clinic operatory and a team of designers, contractors, and representatives of the SIUE School of Dental Medicine reviewed the mock up. Many previous issues had been corrected or modified and were acceptable; however, a few concerns remain. The casework manufacturer will change those items of concern; SIUE SDM will check the changes and hopefully, be able to accept them. The contractor should begin manufacturing the basic casework components as the needed modifications occur within small panels. FM is asking the contractor to complete the entire project by the end of April.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update February 12, 2006: Some proposed additional work for the Edwardsville campus has been temporarily set aside while negotiations take place with the CDB regarding the need for the work. Occasionally, an accountant will reject a proposed extra to a project because they interpret the work as outside the parameters of the appropriation. SIUE communicated to CDB the concerns and reasoning for the disrupted work to be included. The CDB Regional Manager agreed and approved the change order. When the contractor resumes work this spring, he will then include the additional work on the retaining walls at the south end of Founders Hall and the north end of Alumni Hall.
ROMANCE, KID VERSION
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?
“You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.”
Paul, Age 10
“No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with.”
Kirstin, Age 10
WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
“Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.”
Jill, Age 10
“No age is good to get married at. You got to be a fool to get married.”
Adam, Age 6
HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
“Married people usually look happy to talk to other people.”
Scott, Age 6
“You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.”
Derrick Age 8
WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
“Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.”
Kristen, Age 8
“On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.”
Martin, Age 10
WHEN IS IT OK TO KISS SOMEONE?
“When they’re rich.”
Pam, Age 7
“The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.”
Curt, Age 7
“The rule goes like this: if you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do.”
Howard, Age 8
IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
“It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.”
Kelvin, Age 8
HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED?
“There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there?”
Kelvin, Age 8
“You can be sure of one thing the boys would come chasing after us just the same as they do now.”
Roberta, Age 7
HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
“Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck.”
Ricky, Age 10
