WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
“First Grade Wisdom” just before the Service Numbers
Face your deficiencies and acknowledge them; but do not let them master you. Let them teach you patience, sweetness, insight... When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.
Helen Keller

WHAT’S NEW?

JUST AS THE SWALLOWS RETURN TO CAPISTRANO…
The reason for SIUE (a.k.a. students) returns this week for Fall Semester.  They will be getting their textbooks at Textbook Services, moving into residence halls, and generally adapting to being back to school.  As a result, pedestrian traffic may be more congested.  Drivers are reminded to be alert for pedestrians.  Each and every student is invaluable to SIUE.

WHAT A WEEK IT WAS…
Facilities Management replaced a cooling coil in Founders Hall during the week of August 13-19, 2006; building occupants on the second and third floors moved to temporary quarters as work progressed.  After a few “bumps in the road” during installation, the air conditioning was activated and is working well.  FM appreciates the patience of the University Community, and especially these “hot” employees.

Meanwhile, FM plumbers continued installation of automatic flush valves in various restrooms in Peck Hall, Founders and Alumni Halls, and Lovejoy Library in an attempt to “beat the clock” and complete installation before classes begin.  Again, the patience of building occupants was greatly appreciated by FM.

AND THE ROOM BELONGS TO…
Classrooms and labs on campus that are locked for safety or security reasons are assigned to the department responsible for the key.  Facilities does NOT lock or unlock these rooms, but it would be a huge help and greatly appreciated (as well as avoid confusion when classes resume), if departments post contact information on these door signs.  FM appreciates the assistance!

JUST A LITTLE BRAGGING
Several FM staff and employees participate in the SIUE Campus Recreation Faculty and Staff Golf League.  It presents a chance for fun and fellowship with an occasional good game tossed in to keep participants coming back to try again.  This year, two FM staff members were on a team that finished the season strongly and won the Consolation Championship; that is to say they were the best of the worst.  The top four teams competed for the Championship; the bottom four competed for the Consolation Championship.  Congratulations to Ed Matecki and Rick Klein from FM who, along with fellow team members Bill Canney (MUC) and Bill Brinson (Campus Photographer), won the Consolation Championship!

REST IN PEACE…
Flags on campus flew at half-staff on Wednesday, August 16, 2006, to honor Sgt. Bradley Beste, United States Army, 22, of Naperville, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on August 4, 2006.

Flags on campus flew at half-staff on Friday, August 18, 2006 on behalf of Sgt. Steve Mennemeyer, United States Army, 26, of Granite City, IL, killed in the war in Iraq on August 8, 2006.

WHAT A BEGINNING…
This month marks the 25th anniversary of the first IBM PC. This early marvel had no hard drive, used 5 1/4" floppy drives and cost between $1600 and 2800. Yet, it revolutionized the world.

A quick comparison of this early PC vs. a basic machine today: Today's machine costs 2 - 3 times less (about 6 times less adjusted for inflation), the processor runs 1,000 times faster, and has 15 million times the memory.

The original machine had no hard drive. The machine was booted up from floppy disks, and all programs and data were on either floppy disks or a crude drive that used cassettes. Performing most functions required that you repeatedly swap out floppy disks to load programs, load data, and save the output.

And then there were the joys of DOS 1.1…

There is an interesting collection of the early machines, including some predecessors to the IBM PC, in the hallways of Founders Hall.

IN THE WORKS

HAPPY TRAILS
Update August 20, 2006:  Time to hit the trail again!  The closed section of the trail by the Vadalabene Center has been reopened.  Final inspection was conducted with the usual touch-up and clean-up needed.  Seeding of the hillside is done, but the prediction of dry weather through November does not bode well for growth.  The slope is covered with a special fabric which will prevent most erosion, and will remain in place.  Once cooler weather and the better possibility of rain returns, over seeding of the areas will be completed.  Striping of the trail is planned for later this fall.

ADA PROJECT
Update August 20, 2006:  The University review comments have been completed and submitted to CDB.  Now, FM waits again for CDB review and comments.  Based upon review, only a few odds and ends remain for correction or modification; it is anticipated that final documents will be issued in September or October, assuming CDB issues review comments within the next few weeks.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update August 20, 2006:  The contractor will apply water repellant to the aggregate surfaces on the Vadalabene Center.    Parking in the small lot immediately west of the gymnasium is not recommended; the contractor will attempt to block off the entrance, but some University personnel arrive before the applicators.

The remainder of brick work on the main campus is still stymied as no brick is available.  The manufacturer has promised delivery of the brick by mid-September.  The contractor will resume work shortly thereafter, subject to the availability of personnel assigned elsewhere during this forced lull.

MISCELLANEOUS GIR/MOD PROJECTS
Update August 20, 2006:    The new partition system has been completed in the Art & Design Graduate Painting and Graduate Textile Studios, and is a vast improvement over the previous “student built” system.  Electrical connections are being completed in time for the start of school.  Meanwhile, downstairs, work has begun on the Graduate Metalsmithing Studio.  Unfortunately, some work will have to be completed after school begins.  Several key components such as doors and light fixtures are on order; having to depend on the delivery schedule for the materials delays installation.  However, some work, including construction of the student work benches, electrical circuitry, and plumbing rough-in may be completed prior to the start of school.

Work in Building 8272, SIU Alton Dental Clinic, should resume in another week.  Plumbers have been overwhelmed with work that must be completed before school begins (flush valve installation and closed restrooms sound familiar?)  Once that work load is completed, work will resume on other projects including 8272.

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update August 20, 2006:  The University and CDB have issued review comments on the architect’s drawings for the emergency window replacement project, the one specifically repairing damage caused in the July storms.  A formal meeting was held with the architect, CDB, and the University to review the storm replacement design documents, and the overall documents for the exterior enhancement project by the same architect.   Several small projects remain to have the drawings completed and FM is pressing the Architect and CDB for movement on those projects.

WATER TOWER PAINTING
Update August 20, 2006:  The painting of the SIUE water tower is complete; refilling the tank began Thursday, August 17, 2006.
