“Excuse Me?” just before the Service Numbers
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”

WHAT’S NEW?
ONCE AGAIN, IN MEMORY
Flags flew at half-staff on campus Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in memory of Marine Lance Cpl. Philip J. Martini, United States Marine Corps, 24 years old, of Lansing, Illinois, killed in the war in Iraq on April 8, 2006.
Calling for HELP...Donate cell phones to help area seniors and abuse victims
Ever thought how old cell phones can be useful again? Personal cell phones or cell phones with terminated SIUE contracts (discontinued service where the vendor-provided cell phone is no longer operable) CAN BE useful. Cell phones will be refurbished and reprogrammed to dial 911only (any cell phone with or without a paid service contract is required by law to connect to 911).
Your donated
cell phone, battery, and charger will be distributed to assist victims of domestic violence and seniors for emergency use. For local abuse victims and seniors, cell phones provide free 911 service as well as security to seniors within the home who cannot afford telephone service.
Drop off or mail via interoffice any cell phone, battery and charger collecting dust to Room 0210 Dunham Hall (Box 1068) located in the OIT Customer Support Center. 2006 marks the third year that the SIUE community continues to make a contribution to the agencies assisting these individuals.
JUST A REMINDER
(This notice will appear in the ClipBoard weekly until work begins to notify/remind building occupants bothered by painting who may wish to make alternate arrangements for that time.) Beginning the week of May 8, 2006, the west wall of the atrium, the stair railings, stair units, and the railings around each floor opening in Founders Hall will be painted. It is anticipated that the work will last for five or six days. At times, the stairwell will be blocked between floors, but it should be only one floor at a time. FM appreciates the patience of the University community.
SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems. Rendleman Hall Walk-Through is scheduled for Friday, April 28, 2006, and will begin with a meeting at 1:15 in the Chancellor’s Conference Room in Suite 3316. Minutes of each walk-through are posted on the FM web page.
IN THE WORKS
EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update April 23, 2006: Although the major construction work to renovate the campus was completed nearly two years ago, not all of the contracts have been closed. Next week, a meeting is planned with one of the major contractors to finalize his work, resolve a few issues and hopefully, get his contract closed by early summer. Meanwhile, FM awaits drawings on the next phase of work to repair the exteriors and replace the windows on the three original buildings. These documents should be submitted for review by the end of April. Another project just entering the design development stage calls for improvements along Sixth Street from Broadway to the campus. A design firm (along with IDOT who is funding half the costs) have begun developing some concepts for review.
ADA PROJECT
Update April 23, 2006: The ADA Committee and FM have completed the review of the contract documents, and will issue a letter the first of the week. In general, major issues have been addressed, corrections made as requested, and the documents are in good shape. CDB has reviewed the drawings and specifications as well, and are assembling their comments. Optimistically, all comments and the subsequent corrections should be made and returned to CDB by June. Unfortunately, the State is still holding the money for this project, so it most likely will be put on the shelf for a while; an appeal will be made to CDB to release the funds.
SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update April 23, 2006: The contractor continues installing the countertops and related plumbing and electrical components in the operatories. Outside, grading and seeding is progressing and the mason is making his punch list repairs. The final Punch List is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, 2006, with the contractor continuing to promise full completion of the construction by the end of April.
MASONRY RENOVATION
Update April 23, 2006: In spite of what people may think, the different colored brick was NOT used to prove new work had been done; new brick installed recently turned out to be a different color and texture from the original. The brick ordered last fall for the project was just used and the problem was discovered. FM is looking into a number of solutions to the problem, but completion of the brick replacement portion of the project will be delayed. Caulking replacement and sealing will continue.
