WEEKLY UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

“Kids Say the Darndest Things” just before the Service Numbers

“No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.”
Helen Keller

WHAT’S NEW?

SO THE NOISE WAS WORTH IT…
Folks on campus should remember the project to replace the old cooling system when a steady tap, tap, tap, could be heard as the new 3.3 million gallon chilled water storage tank was constructed.  Well, that installation (and the balance of the project, of course) have won an award!  The Illinois Capital Development Board honored SIUE with a Price in Partnership Award which recognizes outstanding efforts by private-sector contractors in design, construction and renovation in state-funded projects.  Participants in the project, in addition to SIUE, were BriC Partnership LLC, Berco Construction Inc., Wissehr Electric, Inc., Kane Mechanical, Inc., Dorgan Associates/Farnsworth Group and CDB Project Manager Terry Phelan.

SO LONG, MIKE!
Facilities Management said good-bye to long-time employee, Mike Cummings, on March 31, 2006, as he retired after twenty years of service as a Groundsman.  All the best on your retirement, Mike!

SO MUCH HELP…
Again in 2006, the Facilities Management Walk-Throughs are providing valuable insight into each building’s unique set of problems.  The Lovejoy Library Walk-Through is scheduled for April 14, 2006, and will begin with a meeting at 1:15 in the third floor Conference Room.  Minutes of each walk-through will be posted soon on the FM web page.

REMINDER
On Tuesday, April 4, the University will conduct tests of its civil defense and fire alarm systems.  Testing of the civil defense sirens will occur at 10:00 a.m., according to State statute, followed shortly thereafter by the sounding of the fire alarms.  Anyone unable to hear the sirens or alarms should e-mail that information, specifying name, building address and phone number, to Facilities Management at fmserv@siue.edu.

BIG BLUES AVAILABLE
As reported in an earlier ClipBoard, Steve Brandenburg, Assistant Director for Building Services, has a surplus of large blue recycling cans; contact him at 2069.

BECAUSE ONE NEVER KNOWS…
Adult CPR and First Aid Classes are available to faculty and staff under the auspices of the American Red Cross.  All information regarding classes is available by contacting Lois Dipazo at 618-465-7704.

IN THE WORKS

EAST ST. LOUIS HIGHER EDUCATION CAMPUS (ESLHEC)
Update April 2, 2006:  Two more small projects are in the design phase, with drawing review taking place.  One project would correct the smoke problem at the Cafeteria grill exhaust hood and the other would take care of some site issues.  A water meter needs to be installed for the IDES building, and some sidewalks need repair.  A new concrete walk area will be added in front of the flag poles as well.

ADA PROJECT
Update April 2, 2006:  The architect submitted the final components of the 100% package to CDB, who now begin their review of the package.  FM has been looking at drawings and preparing comments.  It may be late April before final comments are issued by CDB.

SIUE SDM ALTON CAMPUS/DENTAL CLINIC FACILITY EXPANSION
Update April 2, 2006:  On this project, there is good news and bad news.  The good news is that the plumber, electrician and carpenters have completely installed all eight double units and two single units.  The bad news is that the casework supplier has not delivered any of the remaining eight single units, so the plumbers and electricians have temporarily left the site.  The casework is scheduled for delivery after hours on March 31st and the plumbers and electricians should return Monday, April 3, 2006, to resume their work.  The flooring contractor has been in and started installation of metal edge trim.  The rooms are tight and there are many short walls, so trimming the walls and installing the sheet goods is challenging work for the flooring contractor.  A punch list of the exterior work did not turn up any significant issues.  The architect and engineer have issued the list and the contractors will begin correcting those items.

MASONRY RENOVATION
Update April 2, 2006:  The contractor was on site to begin the final phase of his work.  Time was spent straightening the trailer, sorting through materials and taking inventory as rain prevented work outdoors.  The irregular rain patterns will affect the work schedule since, even if it isn’t raining, the walls, including all crevices and recesses, have to be completely dry before sealing can proceed.  The brick work is dependent on temperatures, but rain does stop some activities.  As a result, the contractor’s work schedule may seem confusing.  The architect has completed a punch list of the work completed before the winter weather ended their regular work schedule.  The contractor will correct those items as he works on the remaining work components.

  KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS

A three year old went with his dad to see a litter of kittens.  On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens.  “How did you know?” his mother asked.  “Daddy picked them up and looked underneath,” he replied.  “I think it’s printed on the bottom.”

A mother and her young son returned from the grocery store and began putting away the groceries.  The boy opened the box of animal crackers and spread them all over the table.  “What are you doing?” his mother asked.  “The box says you can’t eat them if the seal is broken,” the boy explained.  “I’m looking for the seal.”

Can people predict the future with cards?  My mother can.  Really?  Yes, she takes one look at my report card and tells me what will happen when my father gets home.
