Service Alerts & Activities

Who you gonna’ call?
Building occupants are reminded that when liquids are spilled in the building, someone is sick and a clean up is needed, or blood is spilled, Facilities Management Building Service Workers are the ones to call.  Phone 2067, or in case of emergency, phone 3711 and the Building Service Worker will be reached via radio.

E-Service Desk (and “Service” is the operative word…)
Facilities Management eService Desk allows customers and FM staff to request work and check on a work order, schedule status, account information, and view real-time charges.  Click on eService Desk on the FM homepage, www.siue.edu/FACILITIES in the top header directly under the words “Facilities Management.”  Search for information regarding the request by entering the request or work order number emailed to the requestor.  View charges and print pages by clicking on those commands in the right hand side of the grey heading on the eService Desk work order detail page.  A quick tutorial under the “How To” menu on eService Desk explains the process in further detail.

PROJECTS

Student Success Center (Morris University Center)
Central campus is quite busy with ongoing construction this winter.  One of the major projects is the addition to Morris University Center called the Student Success Center.  The exterior walls are enclosed and window and door openings covered with plastic to allow for heating the interior.  Out of sight, interior rough-in is proceeding.  The plumbing contractor has completed the roof drains which helps to keep the building dry with the roof draining correctly (a big factor when the snow melts!).  The plumber is also installing horizontal plumbing and water lines.  The electrician is running conduit above the ceiling and starting on walls where available.  The fire protection contractor is installing main fire sprinkler lines above the ceiling as well as vertical risers connecting the system.  The heating contractor has installed most of the heating equipment so the ventilating contractor is able to run his ducts above the ceiling.  At the same time, the drywall contractor is installing the studs for the partitions, trying to time his work to allow for free access to large open areas above the ceiling and still provide enough walls as needed by the electrician to keep them working efficiently.  Several Contractors are working overtime to keep the project moving.  Completion is expected in mid-June to allow time for various departments to move to their new quarters.

Student Fitness Center
The west side of the Student Fitness Center is also a beehive of activity with the addition moving ahead.  The metal roofing has been slowed by the cold and wet weather.  Some of the storefront framing and glass has been installed on the north side, but the large opening on the south remains open.  The contractor will enclose that end with the permanent storefront if at all possible, but once the roof is finished, he needs to enclose it so he can heat the inside.  The fire protection contractor has been installing his piping and the ventilating contractor is installing duct work.  The electrician has been running conduit and pulling wires.  One of the major needs of the electrician was accomplished during the Christmas break when a new electrical panel was installed to provide the power for the new addition.  A power outage was required and accomplished without greatly affecting the students just before New Years Day.  Some damage to the existing basketball courts occurred during the early December cold spell when the fire protection sprinkler pipes froze and burst.  Steps have been taken to remedy the problem and plans are being developed to replace the damaged floor.

Vadalabene Gym
The Vadalabene Gym reconstruction has been completed, with a few odds and ends to be cleaned up.  The reconstruction included a new wood gym floor, wood basketball court, removal/replacement of bleachers, and addition of a mezzanine level with areas below for offices, classes, a new Women’s Restroom, locker rooms and storage.  The gym works well for competition and provides expanded space for Kinesiology as well as new offices for the Athletic Department.  FM appreciates the cooperation of the University Community through the period of construction.

Early Childhood Center
Another addition to an existing building is occurring at the Early Childhood Center.  The addition will double the size of the existing building and allow the Center the opportunity to serve more families and students.  The exterior walls are framed and the brick sample has been approved, so the brick work will start when the weather permits.  The interior steel stud framing is progressing around the fire protection sprinkler line installation, ductwork installation, plumbing and water piping work, and the electrician’s rough in.  It is a small space for so many workmen to function, but they plan and cooperate with each other, so the work flows smoothly.  The addition is planned for completion later this spring when the child care authorities will review and approve the building usage and the facility will move into the new space.  Then the existing space will be renovated.

School of Pharmacy
A new student lounge is in the early phases of construction as an addition on the north side of the new Pharmacy Laboratory facility.  About 3500 square feet of open space will be provided where students can congregate and have furniture cubicles or study carrels for their use.  The pharmacy students currently have a small room or cubbie hole type spaces to prepare for their classes; the new lounge will remedy that problem.

Biology Laboratories/Offices
Biology welcomed the addition of two new anatomy laboratories in the BLI Technology building in University Park in time for the current semester.  The new labs provide badly needed space to serve the expanding School of Nursing as well as the School of Pharmacy for students needing beginning anatomy classes.  In addition, the Geographical Information Systems offices have been relocated from Alumni Hall to the BLI building freeing some space in Alumni for the School of Nursing.  The GIS offices will remain in this building after the new Science Building and renovation is completed.

Alumni Hall
Those tired of the 70’s blue strips around atrium stairwell openings can expect to see an updated version soon.  The fascia will be repainted in a more neutral color that blends well with the existing brick and wood, yet offers a strong contrast to those existing materials.  The large west wall will also be repainted in the current off-white, but will look fresh and clean.  The existing art work will be removed to allow the painting to occur, and the Museum Department may replace the art work with different pieces.

School of Dental Medicine
Several projects are occurring on the Alton campus.  The leaky, drafty, single pane glass windows of the Administration Building were replaced in the late fall and are a dramatic improvement.  No air leaks in, the temperature differential is vastly improved, and it is much quieter in each office with the new windows.  A little clean up and touch up remains to close out the job.  Another project has begun in the Clinic building that will renovate and greatly enhance the Oral Surgery suite.  This renovation will also provide emergency facilities for completion of procedures should there be a power failure in the area as an emergency generator is being installed to serve critical needs of the clinic.  Some planned improvements include renovation of the Science Building basement into a computer study facility, renovation of the exterior of the gymnasium building including the locker rooms, and the removal of the old unused two-story portion of Building 283 (MDL).

East St. Louis Higher Education Campus
A small project to install safety railings around roof top equipment was completed before the bad weather hit.  Plans to rebuild the leaking brick wall over the cafeteria in Building B will begin soon as the designers will be meeting with the users to discuss the project.  The replacement of the fence has run into unusual contractual issues between the architect and CDB; reportedly, those issues have been resolved and a new contract will permit the architects to begin design of the replacement fence.
