Retention via Trained Course Tutors

Compared to past years, in the fall 1994 our beginning courses, as well as those ofthe other sciences and mathematics, had a sharp decrease in student success rate. We think that part of the problem is that more students than in the past need intense "one on one" or small group learning situations and frequent positive reinforcement. Our tutoring program was overwhelmed and unable to cope with demand. We propose improving the success rate in our freshman/sophomore service courses through making available "Course Specific" tutoring services and small group discussions led by "trained" Graduate Assistants and able junior/senior students. Each course (Chem 120, 121, 241) will be assigned a team of tutors. Each team will be led by a graduate assistant and given additional training in the course material. We will also try to provide tutors with sensitivity training and training in the subtle art of identifying and responding to the real needs of their tutees.

With growing pressure from ABET upon engineering schools to place greater emphasis on design, it is important that we provide our undergraduates with the tools they need to acquire hands-on design experience. Professional circuit design requires the use of quality circuit boards. At present, our students have no quick, safe, inexpensive, nor simple method to fabricate circuit boards. To address this deficiency, we propose purchasing a computer controlled milling and drilling machine capable of producing single- and double-sided boards which can be fabricated in 60 minutes or less by the students themselves.

This proposal is to continue the ABle Program, a successful retention program for at-risk students majoring in Sociology, which was funded by a combination of the Excellence in Undergraduate Education Fund and the Minority Recruitment and Retention Fund (administered by the Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs) during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 academic years, and by teh Minority Fund again in 1994-95. In most cases, when students were enrolled in the program, they achieved significant improvements in their GPA over their cumulative average, and the great majority were retained to graduation.

The project focuses upon the acquisition of slides and videos for the new printmaking studios in the Art and Design Building. The first request was fully funded and I am happy to say that the initial selections have been made; the project is under way. For your convenience, I have attached a copy of that request. At this time I wish to request funds for the continuation of this project. Students and faculty seem to think that this is a good idea and I would like to see it expanded. I am requesting another $4,000 for printmaking slides and videos.

The Programmable Hearing Simulators (PHS) are state-of-the-art, unique technology for teaching skills to assess the hearing function. This proposal will continue the first organized effort that has been undertaken to help our community to prepare for the practice of SI.
