PREPARATION OF PROPOSALS

The EUE proposal should contain the following information, assembled in the order indicated. Subheadings within the proposal narrative should be clearly labeled. Note the stringent page and format limits on the proposal narrative. All forms are available electronically and in print. Electronic versions of the forms may be downloaded from the EUE website. The EUE forms kit also can be requested by sending an e-mail message to Geert Pallemans, EUE Coordinator, at gpallem@siue.edu. or through campus mail (Box 1432). A complete proposal should be prepared according to the following checklist. Proposals that do not follow the prescribed format will not be reviewed.

1. EUE Cover Page (Form EUE-1)

2. Unit Support Statement (Chair and Dean) (Form EUE-2)

3. Results from Prior EUE Support (Form EUE-3)

4. Proposal Narrative (including)

a: Current Situation

b: Proposed Project

c: Evaluation and Dissemination

5. Budget and Budget Justification

6. Biographical Sketch or CV, limited to two pages per Project Director

7. Appendices (If appropriate, please check with EUE coordinator before including)

Eight (8) copies of the proposal must be submitted by February 3, 2008, 4 PM to:

Coordinator, EUE Program Box 1432

EUE Cover Page

The EUE Cover Sheet (form EUE-1 "EUE Cover") for the EUE - 2009 program should be the first page of your proposal. The cover sheet should include information about the project director(s), a budget summary, and a project summary.

Supporting Statement from Chair and Dean

Proposals must be accompanied by the Unit Support Statement (form EUE-2 "Unit Supprot") signed by the appropriate Chair and Dean. The plan for unit cost sharing, if applicable, should also be addressed in this statement.

Results from Prior EUE Support

If the prospective Project Director (PD) or Co-PD has received support from EUE in the past five years, briefly describe the earlier project and its outcomes in sufficient detail to permit a reviewer to reach an informed conclusion regarding the value of the results achieved (form EUE-3 "Prior Support"). Include the title of the project, project number, amount, period of support, a summary of the results of the completed work, and a list of publications and presentations that acknowledged the EUE award (do not submit copies with the proposal). Be aware that, for any completed EUE-funded project, the Project Director must have submitted the "EUE Final Report" or no new grant will be awarded.

Proposal Narrative

Proposal Format: The narrative section must not exceed six double-spaced pages (3 lines per inch) with a standard-sized font. Pages should have 1-inch margins and be numbered consecutively. Proposals must be written in language that can be clearly understood by non-specialists. Inclusion of appendices must be approved, in advance, by the EUE Coordinator. The narrative should include sub-sections describing the current situation, the proposed project, and an evaluation and dissemination plan.

a. Current Situation Discuss the project in the context of its place within the existing curriculum or situation and present the need that the project would address. Briefly describe the segment of the student population that will be served by this project and provide an estimate of the number of students who will be affected by the project upon implementation. Finally, describe measures to be taken to support this project after termination of the EUE grant. This section should normally not exceed one double-spaced page.

b. Proposed Project Describe clearly and concisely the innovation or improvement that you want to make in the undergraduate course or curriculum, or in the wider context of undergraduate education. Describe how this innovation will improve the current status and how it will contribute to excellence in undergraduate education. Relevant literature (e.g. disciplinary and educational journals, meeting abstracts, proceedings, etc.) may be discussed in the context of the proposed project.

c. Evaluation and Dissemination Describe the criteria that will be used to evaluate the quality and impact of the project, how student learning will be evaluated, and how the information gathered will be analyzed to determine the project's effectiveness. Finally, describe how the results of this project will be disseminated to the University community and the discipline.

Budget and Budget Justification: For each budget line on the cover sheet, list the items to be purchased, being as specific as possible in terms of both model number and cost. Provide a brief justification for each item.

Budgets must be prepared using the appropriate line items recognized by the State of Illinois (commodities, contractual services, equipment, salaries, etc.). State of Illinois budget rules categorize software and duplication or photocopying as contractual services; books, and manuals costing more than $100 as equipment, and printing charges as commodities. Most items under $100 should be listed as commodities. Funds for graduate assistants must be categorized as salaries, not student wages. Project Directors may wish to contact the EUE Coordinator for questions regarding the preparation of the proposal budget.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR MULTI-YEAR PROJECTS: EUE Awards under this program are made for the 2009 Fiscal Year only. The budget information on the EUE Cover Form should reflect the request for FY 2009. Your budget justification should include an estimate of the expected budget for the continuation of the project in subsequent years. Funding of a multi-year request does not guarantee support for the subsequent years. It is the responsibility of the Project Director to submit a new application along with a progress report for continuation of funding (see page 1 of Guidelines).

Biographical Sketch or CV: Each Project Director and Co-PD should provide a biographical sketch which includes educational background and career information and lists of publications, presentations, exhibits, etc., grants (internal and external), and experience relevant to the project or to curriculum develop-ment, in general. Biographical sketches may also include lists of other publications, presentations, or exhibits, internal and external grants, and any other information deemed relevant. Biographical sketches must not exceed two-pages for each director. Biographical sketches presented as reduced photocopies, or in unusually small font sizes and/or margins will not be considered.
