PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE MASTERS
The Environmental Science Management program is a new kind of
master's degree, a Professional Science Master's (PSM). The PSM is a degree
in science or mathematics for students interested in wider variety of
career options that provided by current graduate programs. The degree
prepares students for work in fields such as research management and
technology transfer. The New York-based Alfred P. Sloan foundation has
helped launch SIUE's Environmental Science Management program, which has
been developed in concert with industry and is designed to dovetail into
present and future professional opportunities.
THE
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE MANAGEMENT EMPHASIS VS OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
EMPHASES
The main difference in the Environmental Science Management emphasis
from other master's degrees in the sciences is the internship and business
courses that enhance the environmental science courses work. Part of the
M.S. program will be an internship opportunity (6 hours credit) at an area
company. The companies represented on the Environmental Science Management
Advisory Board are Ameren UE, Geotechnology Inc., MACTEC E&C Inc.,
Monsanto Corporation, National Corn to Ethanol Research Pilot Plant,
Philips Environmental Services Corp., and Triad Industries. This Advisory
Board ensures that the Environmental Science Management program meets the
area's workforce needs. Companies such as these will be providing the
internship opportunities. At the end of internship, students prepare a
thesis based on their internship experience.
In addition to at least 21 credit hours in environmental science
courses, students will take business courses in accounting, computer
information, and management, thus providing them with necessary business
skills. After completing the program, graduates will have the necessary
science background, as well as an important business background to help the
needs of area industry.
