The English Department at SIUE offers, through its Undergraduate Program
, the Bachelor of Arts in English as well as the Bachelor of Science in English Education in conjunction with the School of Education; minors are offered in creative writing and linguistics as well as an "open" minor in English itself.
The Department also offers, through its Graduate Program
, a number of advanced-study options. We feature two Master's degree programs: (1) the Master of Arts in English, with specializations in American and English Literature, Creative Writing, Teaching of Writing, and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL); and (2) the Master of Science in Education. The Department also offers three Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs for people who are interested in some advanced study and an additional credential without having to commit to the full 2 years (or more) of a Master's program: currently we offer Post-Baccalaureate Certificates in American and English Literature, Teaching of English as a Second Language, and the Teaching of Writing.
Scholarship and research are essential to the instructional and intellectual vitality of any academic department, and the Department recognizes this by supporting three professional journals
. These journals, edited by members of the English faculty, provide opportunities for English majors and others to gain first-hand experience in scholarly and literary editing. The Department also sponsors Riverbluff Review
, an annual of student poetry and fiction, and supports the Eugene B. Redmond Writers Club and the Black Literary Guild. To encourage writers at the undergraduate and graduate level, the Department sponsors several contests
which offer small monetary awards for winners as well as recognition at the spring Honors ceremony.
