The 200-400 level rhetoric and writing courses offered by the Department of English Language & Literature are designed to give students the opportunity to develop valuable rhetorical practices and necessary skills in expository and professional writing that will serve them well as professionals and citizens in a changing, complex, global economy -- one that demands skilled, competent writers. These courses are of interest (and use) to students across disciplinary boundaries; they are not for English majors and minors alone.
Rhetoric is all about leadership and working with others. It is the art of persuasion. It is knowing how to analyze, develop, and use communication skills in diverse and changing contexts for various and dynamic audiences.
Writing is perhaps the skill that will set you apart from other job seekers. Writing is often the first way you will communicate to your potential employers. It's a skill that will help you to continually develop and advance in your chosen profession ... whatever it might be.
The Rhetoric & Writing Minor is designed to give you the opportunity to develop necessary skills in expository, scientific, and professional writing and rhetorical practices that will serve you well in a changing global economy that demands skilled, competent writers. It will prepare you for active citizenship in a complex world of digital, print, and visual texts.
