ENG 102: SAMPLE SYLLABI

Teachers of ENG 102 have generously provided these sample syllabi to serve as representative examples of SIUE's first-year writing courses. They offer a range of different approaches to ENG 102 in keeping with the course's standard goals & objectives. The purpose of this database of materials is not to provide "ready to go" syllabi that can be simply distributed to students; rather, the pedagogical materials on these pages are intended to inspire ideas, offer suggestions, and provide guidelines for teachers creating their own syllabi (in addition, some examples use textbooks no longer in standard use at SIUE, or are linked to other courses as part of SIUE's Freshman Seminar Program, and so forth). Wherever possible, syllabi have been linked to their corresponding assignment and/or activity sheets and handouts. Particular elements of interest for documents are noted in the "highlights/remarks" column.

While most classroom materials are to some extent collaboratively authored (instructors make use of "teaching lore" -- the pedagogical materials that we share, however formally or informally, from graduate coursework, colleagues, and other sources), the heavy revisions of and additions to individuals' course materials (especially over time) make each document unique; they have been attributed accordingly. All materials are owned by their respective authors.

Materials are provided in MS Word format (.doc) (unless otherwise noted) for convenient revisability.
