Internationalization in the Department of English

Whether it’s literary studies in Iceland or linguistic research in Nepal, the Department of English Language and Literature is branching
out around the world. We have been working hard to increase our international flavor – in our curriculum, in our educational experiences, and in our faculty. Our students, particularly in our graduate program in the Teaching English as a Second Language program, have come from Asia, South America, Africa, South Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. In the past few years, we have added courses to our literature offerings in World Literature (ENG 214 and 215), Literature of the 3rd World (ENG 340), and Topics in Ethnic Literature (ENG 344). Our linguistics curriculum covers a world of language study. Undergraduate and graduate students have recently traveled to Greece, the UK, Mexico, and Spain for study abroad and practicum experiences. The department has also developed an ongoing relationship with the University of Lleida, near Barcelona, with whom we exchange faculty and students. With faculty from Turkey, Israel, and India, and others regularly travelling for research to Western Africa, South Asia, and Europe, the Department of English language and Literature understands the global context of English studies today.
If you are an international student interested in studying English as an undergraduate or graduate student, or a current SIUE English major or minor interested in international opportunities in the Department, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies
or the Director of Graduate Studies
for more information.
