Alice H. Farley (professional name: Alice Hall Petry) chaired the Department of English at SIUE from 1995 - 2001.

Dr. Farley came to SIUE from Providence, where she chaired the Department of English at the Rhode Island School of Design (1993-95). Dr. Farley holds a Ph.D. from Brown University, as well as an M.A. from Connecticut College, and a B.S. with Highest Honors ("University Scholar") from the University of Connecticut. A specialist in 19th- and 20th-century American literature, Dr. Farley has particular interests in Southern fiction, women writers, the short story, and the Fitzgerald/Hemingway circle.

Under the name of Alice Hall Petry, Dr. Farley has published six books:

• A Genius in His Way: The Art of Cable's "Old Creole Days" (Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 1988)
• Fitzgerald's Craft of Short Fiction: The Collected Stories, 1920-1935 (UMI Research P, 1989; paperback: U of Alabama P, 1991)
• Understanding Anne Tyler (U of South Carolina P, 1990)
• Critical Essays on Anne Tyler (Macmillan/Simon & Schuster, 1992) and
• Critical Essays on Kate Chopin (Macmillan/Simon & Schuster, 1996).
• On Harper Lee: Essays & Reflections (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 2007)

She also has published 49 essays in refereed journals, including American Literature, Studies in American Fiction, Southern Quarterly, Studies in Short Fiction, Southern Literary Journal, Essays in Literature, Canadian Review of American Studies, Arizona Quarterly, and the Journal of Modern Literature. Her essays and chapters appear in such books as Faulkner & Women: Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha 1985 (1986), Anne Tyler as Novelist (1994), New Essays on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Neglected Stories (1996), and Zelda & Scott/Scott & Zelda: New Writings On Their Works, Lives And Times (2005).

She has published over 100 book reviews in such places as Mississippi Quarterly, Resources for American Literary Study, College Literature, African-American Review, Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature, American Literature, and the Boston Sunday Globe.

Dr. Farley has served as a Fulbright scholar in Brazil (1985), a United States Information Agency lecturer in Japan (1991), a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies (1987-88), and a visiting professor of American literature at the University of Colorado, Boulder (1987).

She married John E. Farley, Professor of Sociology at SIUE, in 1997. Here is a 2005 photograph of the Farleys in Bavaria; John was participating in a conference on the challenges facing minority groups in Germany.
