INTRODUCTION
This manual (originally created by Mary Steible, with subsequent revision and emendation by Carolyn Handa, Sharon James McGee, Alex Babione, and Jack Voller) is for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville faculty and Teaching Assistants who teach English Composition 101 and English Composition 102. Whether you are new to the department or a veteran composition teacher, you should find the manual helpful, for it reflects the latest university, department, and expository writing program practices and policies. Included in this manual, then, are answers to questions that you may have about subjects as various as "How do I grade an English 101 essay?" to "Can I post students’ final grades online?"
Before exploring the particular policies and practices of composition instruction in the Department of English at SIUE, all faculty (including but not limited to all tenured, tenure-track, and term faculty, both full and part-time) should familiarize themselves with the University's
Ethics of Instruction / Minimum Expectations of Faculty as Teachers.
Important to this edition of the composition manual is the articulation of the expository writing program’s goals for and expectations of its freshman writing students. English 101 and English 102 are "skills" courses required by the University’s general education program. The University expects students to learn how to think and write critically in their composition courses. Students, too, expect that they will learn what is necessary for them to write papers for the academic community. Thus, this manual describes what students should learn, as well as how they should be evaluated on what they learn.
It is surely the case that over time this manual will prove itself in need of additions, deletions, editing, and revisions. All comments and suggestions are invited, and should be directed to
Prof. Anushiya Sivanarayanan, Director of Expository Writing.
