Design for Direct Digital Manufacturing Competition

IME team’s design has been awarded Second Place in the 2011 Society of Manufacturing Engineers Design for Direct Digital Manufacturing Competition. It was very competitive but our IME team achieved a great accomplishment. Total of 20 entrees were sent to the competition from the following schools:
  • University of Massachusetts Lowell
  • Southern Illinois University
  • Utah State University
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Stevens Institute of Technology
  • Central Michigan University
  • Pittsburg State University
  • Sabanci University (Turkey)
  • Walla Walla University (Washington)
  • VIT University (India)
IME team's design is a customizable ceiling fan with adjustable blade angles to allow multiple flow rate settings, rather than a multiple speed motor. The design is being made with three main goals in mind:
  • Adjustable blade angles
    • Customizable blade adjustment knob
  • Simplified secondary components
    • Single speed motor
    • Single on/off switch
    • No additional wiring/switches, compared with traditional fans
  • Minimal Assembly
The team applied the direct digital manufacturing technology to realize these design goals. The team was made of four undergraduate IME students advised by Dr. Lee.
