Students
will listen to Scott Joplin’s “Cascades” and depict on paper the image it
projects in their mind. They will
then examine the actual Cascades at the 1904 World’s Fair and compare their
image. Students will then learn
about Scott Joplin, the man, and create a three slide PowerPoint showing
examples of his work.

Objectives:
1.
Students will depict the mood of music by creating a
drawing of the image they see while listening.
2.
They will share their artwork and discuss differences
and opinion.
3.
Students will analyze the actual photo of the Cascades
at the 1904 World’s Fair. They will
compare their image to this image.
4.
Students will then research Scott Joplin and create a
PowerPoint about his life and his work.

Methods:
Anticipatory Set: Students
will listen to Scott Joplin’s “Cascades”.
They will envision the image it creates in their
mind.
1.
Students will create a picture of the “Cascades” as they
envision it.
2.
Students will share and compare their drawings. They will discuss the mood present in
the music.
3.
Students will study the images of the actual Cascades at
the 1904 World’s Fair.
4.
Student will research Scott Joplin and create a minimum
3 slide PowerPoint showcasing at least 3 pieces of his
work.
Evaluation:
25 points for individual drawing
25 points for completion of 3 slides
50 points for quality of PowerPoint
